Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which term of endearment do Pongo and Missus (and all dogs) use to refer to their masters?

Answer: Pets

Pongo and Missus call Mr. and Mrs. Dearly their pets. In fact, all dogs in the novel do this. A running joke in the book is that humans call themselves owners and the dogs cannot understand why they keep making that mistake, Indeed, the Dearlys and the nannies serve on the Dalmatians hand and foot so it would appear the humans really are the pets.
2. Missus gives birth to a litter of fifteen puppies. What is the name of the smallest of these puppies, who nearly died?

Answer: Cadpig

Cadpig was born very small and very sickly, and the nannies believed she had died. However, Mr. Dearly was able to revive her by gently stroking her with his finger. He named her cadpig because that is a name given to the runt of a litter of pigs.

In the 1961 Disney adaptation, Lucky is the dog that nearly died. In the novel, Lucky is named because the spots on his back (when they begin to form) were shaped like a horseshoe. Roly-Poly is very rambunctious. Patch is the largest puppy and takes responsibility for watching over Cadpig.
3. What does Cruella de Vil say Mr. and Mrs. Dearly should do to the puppies when she sees them for the first time?

Answer: Drown them

Upon seeing the puppies for the first time, Cruella asks what happened to their spots. The Dearlys explain that Dalmatian puppies take a few days before their spots start to show. Cruella then declares the puppies useless since they cannot be made into fur coats with spots and says the Dearlys should drown the worthless puppies. Cruella had previously drowned many kittens her cat had, because they were not as valuable as her cat was.
4. Missus cannot nurse all of her puppies since there are too many of them, so the Dearlys decide to adopt another Dalmatian to help nurse. They cannot locate one, but Mrs. Dearly finds one abandoned on the side of the road and brings her in. The Dearlys name her Perdita, which means what?

Answer: Lost

The Dearlys name her Perdita, which is Latin for "lost", because when Mrs. Dearly found her, she was lost in the snow on the side of the road. Perdita, unlike Pongo and Missus, has liver-colored spots instead of black. She is also very skinny and cold when she is found. Perdita explains her story to Pongo.

Her pet was a mean farmer who barely fed her. She met a Dalmatian named Prince who belonged to a wealthy family. Although she was separated from Prince, she had a litter of puppies whom the farmer sold. Lonely, Perdita left the farm to try and find her puppies or Prince. According to Perdita, her real name is Spotty, but she never mentioned it to anyone and prefers Perdita.
5. How does Pongo explain his relationship with Perdita?

Answer: He feels she is like a little sister.

Pongo very much appreciated that Perdita was able to nurse some of his children and began to see her as a little sister that had come to aid his family. Missus is initially a bit jealous of Perdita. The Splendid Vet suggested that Missus be separated with some of her puppies from Pongo and Perdita, as new dog mothers can be very protective.

In her separation, Missus wondered if Pongo had fallen in love with Perdita and vice versa. However, her fears are unfounded and the three adult Dalmatians get along without issue.
6. In order to kidnap the puppies, Horace and Saul attack Nanny Butler and tie her to a chair.

Answer: False

After learning the Dearlys will not sell any of the puppies, Cruella decides to pay Horace and Saul to dognap them. While the Dearlys and Nanny Cook are out walking Pongo, Missus and Perdita, Cruella pays their home a visit. After Nanny Butler tells her the Dearlys are out, Cruella insists she will wait for them.

This is all a ploy, as Cruella is able to distract Nanny Butler from watching the puppies long enough for Horace and Saul to steal them from the backyard.
7. What is the name of the system Pongo and Missus use to communicate with other dogs about their missing puppies?

Answer: Twilight Barking

After discovering their puppies are missing, Pongo and Missus take to the hill in Regents Park to communicate with other dogs in a system called Twilight Barking. This spreads the message that their puppies had been stolen. It is through the Twilight Barking that they learn the puppies are being held in Suffolk in a manor owned by Cruella de Vil.
8. Pongo and Missus leave the Dearlys behind as they travel through the English countryside to Suffolk. In addition to not saving their puppies, what do Pongo and Missus fear the most should they be captured?

Answer: They would not be returned to the Dearlys.

Pongo and Missus left home without their collar and coats, meaning they risk being sent to a pound instead of back to the Dearlys should they be captured. Although the Dearlys put out a notice in the newspapers about their missing Dalmatians, Pongo and Missus were a considerable distance out of London, and there would be no guarantee that the people in the country would know to contact the Dearlys if they were captured.
9. During the journey to Suffolk, how is Pongo injured?

Answer: A boy throws a rock at him.

Pongo and Missus were supposed to follow a certain path where other dogs had set up shelter and food along the way. However, they became too cold and hungry and they were forced to make a slight detour because daybreak was coming and they had not reached the village they were supposed to.

They arrived at a different village looking for food. They came across a small boy who teased them into thinking he had food when he just wanted to throw rocks at them. One of the rocks injured Pongo's leg. Missus convinced him to rest in a haystack while she sought help.

She came across a Spaniel who was very old and had not heard their story but helped anyway. They spent the night with him and his pet, who also very old.
10. What kind of dog is Colonel, the dog who was most instrumental in aiding Pongo and Missus on their journey?

Answer: Sheepdog

Colonel is a sheepdog who lives in a farm near Hell Hall, Cruella's manor where the puppies are being kept. The puppies were actually discovered by Pussy Willow, a Tabby cat who also goes by Lieutenant Tib, but it is the Colonel who organized the stops for Pongo and Missus on their journey and who gave them frequent updates on the way. What Colonel did not tell Pongo and Missus until they arrived is that, in addition to their fifteen puppies, there are 82 other Dalmatians in Hell Hall as well.
