Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Snubby and Loony are spending the Easter holidays with the Lyntons, but Snubby must share Roger's room rather than having the guest room. Which relative is staying in the guest room?

Answer: Great Uncle Robert

Great Uncle Robert is elderly and likes peace and quiet. Unfortunately, in any house with Loony and Snubby in it, peace and quiet tend to be in very short supply...
2. Loony has an ongoing 'feud' with the Lynton's pet cat. What is her name? (English name from later editions, not her original name)

Answer: Sardine

Sardine, so called because of her fondness for the fish, has a habit of lying on one of the stair treads, near the top, to catch the unwary as they pass...
She was originally called Snoek, a type of fish similar to tuna and sold in tins in Britain in the 40s and 50s.
3. Snubby spins a wild story to his travelling companion on the train to the Lynton's house. What name does he make up for his imaginary gang of thieves?

Answer: Green Hands

Snubby has a whale of a time adding lurid details to his imaginings. Unfortunately they come back to 'haunt' him when a green glove is found at the scene of a crime nearby...
4. The children are delighted when they find out that Barney is working at the fair. What job is he doing there?

Answer: Running the Hoop-la stall

Barney is running the Hoop-la stall in the fair which is owned by the fierce Frenchman Tonnere.
Miranda helps him take the money and collects the hoops after the people have thrown them.
5. What are the names of the two performing chimpanzees who live at the fair?

Answer: Hurly and Burly

Hurly and Burly do all kinds of tricks; they can even ride bicycles. Burly has a collection of stuffed toys which he loves, and Hurly has a weakness for sweeties; he will pick people's pockets to get them if he knows they are there!
6. When Cook tells Snubby she will "eat her hat" if she sees the performing chimps at the fair riding bicycles, Snubby says he will "let her off" if she makes something he specially likes for tea. What is it?

Answer: Meringues

Snubby is delighted at the thought of Cook eating her hat, but he is even more delighted at the thought of his favourite meringues for tea.
7. The children suspect that the fair always moves near the site of the next robbery. Which stately home do they believe will be the target when the fair comes to Rilloby?

Answer: Marloes Castle

Marloes Castle houses an important collection of old papers and manuscripts. It is also home to a collection of stuffed animals, which are all motheaten and shabby when the children go to look at them with Great Uncle Robert.
8. When Snubby is lurking in the garden of the stately home the children believe is the site of the next robbery, what frightens him?

Answer: Lots of glowing eyes in the bushes

The glowing eyes turn out to be the stuffed animal collection which has been mysteriously arranged in the castle grounds by the burglar. The children discover this from the newspaper report of the break in the next day. Strangely, nothing else was taken...
9. What are Vosta's first names?

Answer: Illia Juan

Once the police realise that it is Burly the chimpanzee who is doing the burglaries, they rush to fairground and arrest Vosta. He then claims to have been merely a 'cat's paw' in the pay of Tonnere and a 'mystery man' who gave him his orders for Burly to carry out.
10. Once the 'master criminal' behind the thefts is discovered, the children realise they have seen him before, but he was disguised. What was his disguise?

Answer: The 'hairy man'

Snubby realises that Thomas Colville and the 'hairy man' from the castle's archive are one and the same when he sees the huge tufts of hair growing from his ears. The tufts are the only part of the hairy disguise that were actually real.
