Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Malik's real name as a prince?

Answer: Walid ibn Hujr

Walid ibn Hujr is Malik's real name. He happened to make his own name, Malik, to hide his true name, as he was so embarrassed by his past actions. Walid was a bad man as a king, who wanted to destroy anyone who came in his path, but as he learnt his errors, he became Hakim, a good man.
2. What were the names of the sons of Hammad ibn al-Haddad in order of first to last born?

Answer: Raschid, Hasan, Sayf (a.k.a Amir)

He had three sons and their names were Raschid (a merchant), Hasan (a herder) and Sayf (a bandit) in order of first born to last born. Walid meets them one by one on his journey to find the stolen carpet. He becomes their close friend and tells Sayf and Raschid what he really did to Hammad (their father), but doesn't tell Hasan as he wants him to remain happy.
3. What is the carpet's specialty?

Answer: It can show the past, present and future times of mankind

Walid saw this carpet and found the history of mankind race past him. The three thieves, when seeing this carpet, had committed suicide, gone mad or gone blind. Only Walid had remained sane and safe. The carpet really was special, even though it looked like any other carpet.
4. Which guard died while protecting the secret chamber that held the carpet from the three thieves?

Answer: Jalaf

It was Jalaf, an unknown character who only appears in that chapter. King Walid also came to look but got whacked by Hakim who took the carpet and fled. Next day, Walid woke up and fled from the palace of Dhat Kahal in search of the carpet.
5. Was Zahra the Bedouin chief's daughter?

Answer: Yes

Yes, she was the daughter of Sheik al-Harit. She loved Walid, so when he left the camp, she went with him in search of the carpet. She also provided a new clue as to the whereabouts of the carpet. Zahra was a good, strong and valiant lady.
6. Where did Walid and Zahra find Hakim?

Answer: Hegra

They found him in an old house, blind. He denied that he had the carpet, but Walid found it and took it away. Hakim was the leader of a group of thieves, apparently.
7. What was the name of the judge at the poetry competition of Ukaz who also judged the poetry competition in Dhat Kahal?

Answer: Al-Nabiga Al-Dubyani

He was a famous judge who judged many famous poetry competitions in Arabia. He was a good man because he was not biased towards Hammad. When Walid went and asked him what was wrong with his quasida, Dubyani simply said that his did not contain "heart".
8. Was the grand vizier of Dhat Kahal a good man?

Answer: Yes

Yes, the grand vizier was a good man. He worked hard, when Walid backed out, to bring the land back into form but never accomplished it. Walid finds out that Hakim wanted the post of grand vizier as he said lies to Walid about the present vizier being a bad man. Walid exiled him for this lie.
9. Why did Raschid appoint Walid as his secretary?

Answer: Because Walid knew many languages

Walid knew how to read and write Hebrew, so Raschid took him in as a secretary. But as Walid started to travel around with him and got involved in the merchant's affairs, Raschid believed Walid was worthy of being his business partner.
10. What happened to the carpet at the end?

Answer: It was broken into four pieces and given to Walid and the sons of Hammad.
