Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which U.S. state does Dorothy hail?

Answer: Kansas

In the beginning of the story, Dorothy is at home with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry in Kansas, right in the middle of the country. One day, while Dorothy plays with her dog, Toto, a cyclone touches down in the fields and picks up their house, sending Dorothy and Toto into the sky and to a far-away land.

The house lands in a place not at all similar to Kansas and Dorothy is shocked to find three small men (known as Munchkins) and a witch outside her door. The witch reveals herself to be the Good Witch of the North and she tells Dorothy that her house has landed on the Wicked Witch of the East who has dried up in the sun and left behind her shoes. She also says that she must head onward to the city in the center of the land of Oz to meet the great wizard. The witch kisses her and leaves a mark of protection before disappearing.
2. Dorothy is told to take which path to meet the Wizard of Oz?

Answer: The Yellow Brick Road

Packing a lunch and donning the Wicked Witch's shoes (which fit perfectly) Dorothy and Toto begin their journey from the village of the Munchkins onward along the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wizard of Oz. They spend the night at a house occupied by five Munchkins who say that Dorothy is a friendly witch from another world and she is told that many dangers may lay ahead on the way to the Great Wizard.

Dorothy and Toto stop at a farmer's field en route and find a scarecrow perched on a pole. He asks Dorothy to help him down (which she does) and he states that he is at her service. She mentions the quest to meet the Wizard of Oz and the Scarecrow joins her and Toto hoping that his wish for brains will be granted.

While they get to know one another, Scarecrow tells a story about how he came to be and Dorothy tells him stories about Kansas. He says that it sounds awfully dreary, but she claims that there's no place like home.
3. What do Dorothy and the Scarecrow give to the Tin Man to rescue him?

Answer: Oil

Stopping at a cabin for the night, Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow wait until morning before heading back out into the forest where they hear a distinct groaning. This groaning comes from a man made of tin who needs oil for his joints so they find a can in the cabin and return him to a mobile state. The Tin Man thanks them and continues on the Yellow Brick Road with them because he wants to ask the Wizard of Oz for a heart to replace the one he once had as a human; the Wicked Witch of the East used her magic to force him to become a man of tin and he lost the woman he loved; he needs a heart to love her again.

The group continues on through the forest before a large lion bounds into their way and attempts to attack the party. Dorothy stands up to the beast who admits that he is, in fact, a cowardly lion and not at all brave enough to actually fight them. He joins the group as well with the hope that the Wizard of Oz will grant him courage enough to be the King of the Jungle.
4. Dorothy, Toto, and the Cowardly Lion all fall asleep in a field containing which of these flowers?

Answer: Poppies

The travellers continue on their journey down the Yellow Brick Road encountering and overcoming difficult obstacles such as deep ditches and gullies, a rushing river, and evil creatures known as Kalidahs. These are all easily passed over using the unique skills of each member of the group including Lion's jumping capabilities and the Tin Man's axe. The group attempts to paddle downriver on a raft made by the tin man but the Scarecrow gets his pole stuck in the water and he is left behind. The rest of the group is able to convince a stork to carry him to shore and he is saved.

Perhaps the most dangerous obstacle encountered is the deadly poppy field. When Dorothy and Toto walk into this meadow of poppies they instantly fall asleep. The Tin Man and Scarecrow carry them out to the other side while the Lion rushes ahead to prevent his own slumber. Unfortunately, he barely misses the edge of the meadow and they must leave him behind as he is too heavy to lift.
5. What is the name of the city containing the Wizard of Oz?

Answer: The Emerald City

Emerging from the poppy field, the remaining members of the group encounter a wildcat chasing a field mouse and the Tin Man, who feels that the mouse should survive, kills the feline with his axe. The field mouse says that he is indebted to the Tin Man and for saving him, the services of all of the field mice are at his disposal. The Tin Man asks the mice to pull the Cowardly Lion from the poppy field and they appear in droves to do as he asks. The Lion rejoins the group.

It isn't long before Dorothy and her friends arrive at the gates of the Emerald City where they request entry to visit the Wonderful Wizard of Oz himself. The gate swings open and the group is greeted by a man in green at the same height as a Munchkin. He states that few dare to see the face of the wizard who, while all-powerful, is also vengeful. He does not refuse their entry however, and he makes them wear mandatory spectacles so that the glare and beauty of the city do not blind them as they travel through it.
6. Dorothy destroys the Wicked Witch of the West using which of these?

Answer: A bucket of water

Dorothy and company are led into the Emerald City by its citizens and granted a stay in the chambers near the great wizard's throne room. Each of them is allowed to enter the wizard's chamber one per day in the morning to state their wishes. Dorothy goes first and requests to be sent back to Kansas but the wizard (in the form of a giant head) says that he will only grant her wish under the condition that she kills the Wicked Witch of the West. Her friends are promised their own requests under the same circumstances. They decide that they have no choice.

Everyone heads west into the wilderness to reach the witch's castle but she is aware of their journey long before they arrive. She sends hordes of wolves, crows, and bees to kill the group but to no avail. She finally decides to call upon her winged monkeys using an item that can be used only three times. She's already used this particular item twice (once to enslave the Winkies and once more the force the wizard away from the west) but they do as they're told; Scarecrow is torn apart, the Tin Man is dropped off a cliff, and the lion is tied up. They simply carry Dorothy and Toto to the witch's castle because she is protected by the mark of the Good Witch of the North.

The witch imprisons Dorothy and hides her true fear of the little girl in order to find a way to steal her magical shoes. On one day, Dorothy trips over an invisible pole set up to trick her and the witch steals one of the shoes. Angrily, Dorothy tosses a bucket of water on the witch, revealing her one true weakness. The witch melts and Dorothy is freed!
7. Dorothy makes use of which of the following to call upon winged versions of the creatures pictured?

Answer: A golden cap

Dorothy and the Lion free the Winkies of the West from being captive slaves and set out to save the Tin Man and Scarecrow from their miseries by returning them to the castle and mending them both. They spend a great deal of time in this land before Dorothy decides that she misses Kansas. They all decide to head back to Oz to prove that they've defeated the witch and Dorothy comes across a magical, golden hat, the very same item used by the witch to call upon her flying monkeys.

While traveling to Oz, Dorothy and the others get lost in the endless, yellow fields and decide to call upon the mice for help. The Queen of the Mice suggests that Dorothy use the hat she possesses to call upon the flying monkeys who must grant three wishes to the owner of the object. Dorothy summons them and has the monkeys carry them all to Oz to meet with the Wizard.
8. What does the wizard place into the Scarecrow's head to give him 'brains'?

Answer: Bran

Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion all head back into the Emerald City and demand to meet with the Wizard who only allows them into his chamber after being threatened with the possibility of winged monkeys. When they enter his throne room, Toto accidentally knocks over a partition revealing the wizard for who he truly is: an ordinary, old man. The 'Wizard' states that he has no magical powers; he flew to Oz in a balloon from Nebraska and had the locals built him a city. It also turns out that the Emerald City isn't green at all-- it's only green because of their spectacles!

Everyone still wants what they were promised and he promises to give them what they've desired for so long. Dorothy, however, must wait a few days so that he can create a plan to take her home to Kansas.

To satisfy the requests of Dorothy's friends, the wizard stuffs some 'bran-new' brains in the Scarecrow's head, a stuffed silk heart is put into the Tin Man, and a bottle of 'liquid courage' is poured for the Cowardly Lion. The Wizard is unsure of how to help Dorothy however, as her request will take more than foolish parlor tricks.
9. The Wizard of Oz departs from the Land of Oz in the object depicted.

Answer: True

The Wizard of Oz thinks at great length about how to send Dorothy home and he decides he will accompany her in a hot air balloon (so that he can also return home to work in the circus). The two of them craft a balloon big enough for two and the Wizard places the Scarecrow in charge of the Emerald City before hopping in. To Dorothy's horror, however, the balloon breaks free from its rope while she searches for Toto and the Wizard leaves without her.

Dorothy calls upon the winged monkeys for the second time to take her home to Kansas but they are unable to do so; they can not leave Oz. Before long, she discovers that she can possibly request a favour from the Good Witch of the South and she and her friends decide to set out to meet her in her castle near the desert. Their journey south begins with a dense forest of fighting trees and continues until they reach a wall made of china which they promptly climb over.
10. What colour shoes does Dorothy wear throughout the book?

Answer: Silver

Emerging from the fragile land populated by china figures, the group comes across a group of animals holding a meeting in a dense forest. The animals ask the once-cowardly lion for his assistance and bravery to defeat an evil spider lurking nearby. The Lion agrees to assist them with his new-found courage and he kills the spider while it sleeps.

The group of four arrives at a steep hill guarded by armless soldiers with firable heads and they find that their way is blocked. Luckily, Dorothy is able to call upon the winged monkeys one final time and they fly to the Land of the Quadlings. They are led directly to the Good Witch.

The Good Witch says that she will be able to grant Dorothy's wish in exchange for the golden cap which is promptly handed over; the witch then uses the cap to send Dorothy's three friends back to their respective kingdoms. Dorothy is told that she's had the power to go home all along in her silver shoes and all she needs to do is click the heels three times and she'll be whisked back to Kansas. Dorothy does this and flies through the skies to her prairie farm, losing her shoes over the great desert on the way. Finally, she makes it home.
