Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the Good Witch of the North give Dorothy?

Answer: Shoes and a special protective spell

After her house was swept up in a tornado, Dorothy found herself in Oz. The Munchkins rejoiced when she woke up because her house had killed the Wicked Witch of the East. The Witch had made every Munchkin her slave and her death brought about their freedom. The Good Witch of the North gave the Wicked Witch's silver slippers to Dorothy, adding that they carried a special charm. The Good Witch also gave her a protective kiss on the head for her travels. Dorothy's shoes would not suit her for walking such a distance, so she decided to don the silver slippers.
2. Toto was a loyal dog for Dorothy, but he bonded with someone else. Who was it?

Answer: The Cowardly Lion

Dorothy met the Cowardly Lion in the forest, and he did not make a good first impression. He almost bit Toto before she hit him away and scolded him. The Lion explained his dilemma and they agreed to travel together. Toto sniffed him intently and at first didn't appear to like him. But then it was mentioned that they became good friends over time.
3. Who saved the Scarecrow from the river?

Answer: A kind stork

The group built a raft to traverse a river in their way. Soon its current swept them away, and they were carried far from where they needed to go. The Lion was able to drag them to shore, but only after the Scarecrow got stuck in the river, holding an oar that had gotten stuck in the mud. Dorothy feared he was stuck for good, but a kindly stork agreed to help them.

She flew and carried the light, straw-filled Scarecrow up and out of the river.
4. Who saved the Lion from the deadly poppies?

Answer: The Queen of the Field Mice

The group walked through lovely red poppies during their journey. Dorothy didn't know that merely breathing in their smell put you to sleep, and if you slept too long you would sleep forever. She, Toto, and the Lion, being the only alive beings, all fell asleep. Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were able to carry Dorothy and Toto out of the deadly poppies, but needed the assistance of the Queen and thousands of her mice friends to drag the Lion out because he was so big.

The Tin Woodman created a truck and they all dragged the Lion out of the poppies with it.
5. What form did Oz appear as for the Tin Woodman?

Answer: A great beast

Oz chose to appear as different forms for everyone in the group. For Dorothy he made himself a large head. He demanded that she kill the Wicked Witch of the West in return for a trip home to Kansas. For the Tin Woodman, Oz was an immense beast with the head of a rhinoceros.

The Lion boasted that he would roar at the beast when he met him, and get Oz to do his bidding. But Oz appeared as a massive ball of fire and the Lion could do no harm to it.
6. Which of the following was not an animal that the Wicked Witch of the West sent to get Dorothy and her friends?

Answer: Large spiders

The Witch tried over and over again to prevent Dorothy from coming to her. First, she sent wolves, but the Tin Woodman destroyed them. Then she tried using crows, but of course the Scarecrow thwarted those plans. Next, she sent black bees to them. The Tin Woodman commanded the Scarecrow to cover Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion, while he himself was unharmed by the bees, which each died due to losing their stingers.

Then the Witch sent her army at them, but the Cowardly Lion's mighty roar frightened them away.
7. The Winged Monkeys were cursed to grant three requests to whoever possessed the Golden Cap. What was their last request they performed for the Wicked Witch of the West?

Answer: They fetched Dorothy

Years ago, the Winged Monkeys had a curse placed upon them by a powerful woman, just because they tossed her love into some water, soaking the nice clothes she had made for him. The woman created a Golden Cap, and whoever wore it and said a charm was able to command the monkeys three times.

The Wicked Witch of the West used her last request for them to get Dorothy for her, and they were the only ones who were able to do it. Glinda freed them of the curse at the end of the story.
8. Why did the Witch want the Lion?

Answer: She wanted him to draw her carriage

Along with Dorothy, the Winged Monkeys grabbed Toto and the Lion. The Witch wished to use the large Lion to carry her along in her carriage. When he refused, she locked him up and didn't give him any food. However, Dorothy kindly snuck him food each night.
9. What did the Witch do that finally angered Dorothy enough to fight back?

Answer: She stole a slipper

The Wicked Witch yearned for the slippers Dorothy wore, for she knew they carried a special charm. She came up with the idea of tripping Dorothy, and it worked, as one slipper fell off. The Witch snatched it up eagerly and declared she would get the other at some point.

It angered Dorothy so much that she picked up a bucket of water and threw it on the Witch. The Witch melted away and Dorothy gained her freedom.
10. What did Glinda want from Dorothy in return for sending her home?

Answer: The Golden Cap

After Oz floated away in his balloon, Dorothy was very disappointed. She worried she'd never see Aunt Em again. However, the group decided to visit Glinda, who was a good Witch. She had red hair and was very beautiful. One look at Dorothy and Glinda knew what to do.

She asked for the Golden Cap in return for the information Dorothy needed. With the Cap, Glinda was able to send Dorothy's companions to their desired location.
