Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (Example) Ball of gas in the sky (SUN) + It's made up of 24 hours (DAY) = A day of the week (SUNDAY) A precious stone + the area where your spine is located = a very deadly rattlesnake.

Answer: Diamondback

A diamond is a precious stone and so is a ruby but ruby lips is NOT one word. Gold and silver are precious but they're also metals.

The Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake is the largest of the rattlesnakes and it has a prominent place in the history of the USA. The Gadsden flag, which was created during the American Revolution, has an image of a coiled rattlesnake on its bright yellow background. Underneath the snake is the motto "Don't tread on me".
2. A word that means untidiness + what someone wants to know when they ask how old you are = a note from someone.

Answer: Message

A mess hall is a military building where soldiers and other personnel go to have their meals. Even though it has the word mess in it, it cannot be correct because it is more than one word. Bulletin is also a compound word and it can also be a note or a message but bullet does not mean untidiness, even though it has the ability to cause it, and "in" is not your age.
3. A word that means "always" + a word that describes the usual colour of lawns = a tree that is the same colour as the lawn all year round.

Answer: Evergreen

Evergreens are trees that do not lose their leaves during the year and, as a result, the tree has colour all year round. This may confuse you a little - the Blue Spruce is a conifer and like its name suggests its leaves look more blue than green but it is called an evergreen. However, it is not the right answer here because it is not one word. Aquamarine and rednecks are not trees.
4. A word that means jump + an amphibian that is a little bit like a toad = a children's game where one person bends down and the next person jumps over them.

Answer: Leapfrog

Frogs and toads look similar but there are many differences. A frog usually has smooth skin and spends a lot more time in the water while toads spend more time on land and, because of this their skin is drier and may develop warts. It is important to realise that this is not always the case but can be used as a general rule of thumb. Here's another rule that we've spoken about - Jumping Jacks is two words and not one. A jumping jack is a type of exercise that is also called a star jump.
5. A word that means "play by the rules" + another word for earth = a park where a carnival is held.

Answer: Fairground

Fair has more meanings than just play by the rules or implying that someone is honest. If someone says that the weather is fair it means that there are clear skies above. To say that someone's hair is fair indicates that they have pale coloured hair rather than dark.

A fair can also mean a carnival and sometimes a parade can be a type of carnival but remember parade ground is two words, not one.
6. Another word for happiness + a piece of wood such as a small tree branch = a controlling device for a computer or video game.

Answer: Joystick

A joystick is a controlling lever that helps you to move characters or objects within a video game. Joysticks can also be used to operate large scale machinery such as aircraft. Enjoyment and jubilation are other words for happiness but there hasn't been anything added to them that means "stick".

The Fat Controller is two words and he is not a joystick. He is a character from the "Railway Series" of books by the Rev. W.V. Awdry, which tell stories about Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends.
7. Another word for fumes + something that you turn on before entering a dark room = a type of illumination.

Answer: Gaslight

All of these items will produce some form of illumination or lighting. Let's rule the first one straight away - Hurricane lamp - which is TWO words. A hurricane lamp runs on oil rather than gas. A taillight is a lamp that is fixed at the back of a motor vehicle. Yes it does have the word "light" in it but a tail is not another word for fumes. Finally, the flashbulb, which you usually find attached to cameras to provide enough light to allow the photographer to take pictures in darker areas, starts with flash, which is also not fumes.
8. Something that unlocks a door + another word for a pit = a part of a lock on a door.

Answer: Keyhole

In some stories "Open Sesame" has managed to open doors but that's two words. In the "Harry Potter" books by J.K. Rowling "Alohomora" is the charm that opens doors and while that is only one word it is not made up of two different words. The last one is the doorknob and whilst these are very handy when it comes to opening doors and it is a compound word, knob is not another word for pit.
9. The opposite of out + to arrive at a place = another word for money that you earn or wages.

Answer: Income

"Come in" is made up of the same two words as "income" but it's not the correct answer because it's two words and not one. Also "come in" is an invitation to enter a place it doesn't mean money that is earned. Income comes in many forms. It is not just the pay you receive for doing your job it can also be interest that you earn on the money you have saved and put into your bank account.
10. A word that describes something tall or raised up + a word that means "not heavy" = something that stands out.

Answer: Highlight

Highlight can be used as both a noun and a verb. As a noun it means the most memorable part or the best part of something. For example; the highlight for me was when the batter hit the ball out of the park. As a verb it means to point at something to show that it is important or special. Noteworthy also means something that is special or important but "note" does not mean tall and "worthy" is not another word for light. Major League is something that stands out it is two words.
