Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am on the northern coast of Africa, and I border the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. There is a large river running through the middle of me and there are many ancient pyramid-shaped buildings nearby. What country am I?

Answer: Egypt

The Pyramids are some of the oldest buildings on Earth, with some scientists declaring that they were built over 5,000 years ago! The mysterious Sphinx is nearby and is about the same age.
2. I am the second largest country in South America, and I own the highest mountain on the whole continent. My flag has two light blue horizontal stripes surrounding a white stripe, with a sun in the middle. Soccer is my most popular sport, but my people are also very good at polo and rugby union. What country am I?

Answer: Argentina

Only Brazil is a bigger country. The highest mountain is called Aconcagua. My borders are Chile to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north and Brazil and Uruguay to the northeast. The Argentinian rugby team is called the Pumas, and their polo team won three of the first five world championships.
3. My stamps have Helvetia on them as the country name. I am where the Red Cross was founded in 1863. One of my most famous books is called 'Heidi', about a young girl growing up with her grumpy grandfather. What country am I?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland has borders with Italy, France, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. It is well known for its mountains, called the Alps. The Swiss flag is the reverse of the Red Cross flag and it is one of only two square flags in the world- the other is Vatican City.
4. I am a country that consists of many islands and was named after a Spanish king. I share my name with the sea to my east and became an independent country in 1946. What country am I?

Answer: Philippines

There are more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines, most of them very small. There are several active volcanoes there, with Mt Pinatubo probably the most famous- it erupted in 1991, killing many people.

The islands were named by Spanish explorers in 1542 in honour of King Philip II.
5. I am one of the few countries that is on two continents. My name is the same as a bird, and it is believed that Noah's Ark can be found on my highest mountain. What country am I?

Answer: Turkey

Turkey is in both Europe and Asia, and there are two huge bridges to carry road and rail traffic from one side to the other. The largest city, Istanbul, is also divided into two.

Turkeys (the bird) are not even found in Turkey (the country)! They are, instead, native to North and Central America and they were confused with other European birds by the early American settlers. The mountain where Noah's Ark rests is call Mt Ararat.
6. I am a small country in Central America and I have coastlines on two oceans. I am probably best known for an artificial waterway that was completed in 1914. I also have a type of hat named after me. What country am I?

Answer: Panama

The Panama Canal was a huge engineering feat and took more than 30 years to build. At over 70 kms long, it saves ships from having to travel all the way around the bottom of South America.

Panama hats are not actually from Panama- they are usually made in Ecuador. They are a lightweight straw hat, which are quite comfortable in the tropical heat of Central and South America.

All the wrong answers are Central American countries, too.
7. I am a country in South-East Asia that is long and thin and I border China, Laos and Cambodia. My largest city is Ho Chi Minh and one of the Seven Wonders of Nature in on my north coast. What country am I?

Answer: Vietnam

I visited Vietnam and loved it! I have never seen so many motor scooters- they were everywhere. Ho Chi Minh City is a huge city in the south of the country, and used to be called Saigon. Hanoi is another very large city in the north, and it is near Ha Long Bay, a huge bay filled with hundreds of tiny islands, and named one of the New7Wonders of Nature in 2009.
8. I am a small country in Europe and am home to the first Legoland. A little mermaid lives here, too. What country am I?

Answer: Denmark

Legoland is in the small city of Billund, and the statue of The Little Mermaid is in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. It was constructed in memory of Hans Christian Andersen. Denmark also governs Greenland, a huge island just off the coast of Canada. Greenland is 50 times the size of Denmark!
9. I am a large country at the bottom of Africa. I have three capital cities and eleven official languages. I am home to many types of animal, including lions, giraffes, elephants, antelopes and hyenas. What country am I?

Answer: South Africa

The three capitals are Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Cape Town. South Africa is sometimes called the 'Rainbow Nation', because of the many different cultures and people that live there. Its flag is very bright, with six different colours.

The three wrong answers are all countries in the north of the continent.
10. I am home to many unusual animals, such as wallabies, euros, brolgas and taipans. I am a very large country in the Southern hemisphere, and my capital city is Canberra. What country am I?

Answer: Australia

The euro and the wallaby are species of kangaroos, a brolga is a large bird similar to a crane and a taipan is a very deadly snake. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, after Russia, Canada, China, USA and Brazil.
