Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which large northern European country, with shores on the Baltic Sea, is the birthplace of Volvo cars, Scania trucks, and IKEA furniture?

Answer: Sweden

As well as the Baltic Sea, Sweden has borders with Finland and Norway. Its capital is Stockholm, and its flag is blue with a yellow cross.

Sweden is also well-known for other products, such as Saab cars, Husqvarna sewing machines, motorcycles and lawnmowers and Electrolux household appliances. It is also the home of the Nobel Prizes.
2. Which country, known for tacos and sombreros, has an eagle perched on a cactus, and holding a snake, on its flag?

Answer: Mexico

The Japanese flag has a big red circle, and Canada has a big red maple leaf. Albania has a double-headed black eagle on its flag, but no snakes or cactus plants.

In 1968, the Olympic Games were held in Mexico City; they were the first to be held in a Spanish-speaking country.
3. The last stop of the liner Titanic was at Queenstown, which is a southern port in this country. There are no snakes here, as St Patrick drove them all away. Because of the lush greenery, it is known as the Emerald Isle. What country am I?

Answer: Ireland

Titanic stopped at Queenstown (now known as Cobh), on her ill-fated trip to New York. Over 120 passengers boarded there.

The 5th-century missionary, St. Patrick, was alleged to have banished all the snakes from Ireland, but this seems to be a bit of a myth. Zoologists have speculated that there were never any snakes there in the first place, but it makes a nice story.

The naming of the country can be a bit confusing. Ireland (the island) contains The Republic of Ireland (sometimes called Eire), and the English portion, known as Northern Ireland.
4. This country is situated on the northwest of Africa, and is famous for a classical movie made in 1942. Some of the country is in the Sahara Desert, and it has two large mountain ranges, the Rif and Atlas Mountains. What country is it?

Answer: Morocco

The movie is called 'Casablanca', which is often called one of the best movies ever made, and it won three Academy Awards in 1943.

Morocco is the only country in Africa that has beaches on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the bottom half of the Strait of Gibraltar, the place where those two bodies of water meet. Spain is on the northern side, only about 14 kilometres away.

Egypt is in the northeast of Africa, at the opposite end of the Sahara. Kenya is on the east coast of Africa, and Saudi Arabia is in the Middle East, in Asia.
5. This country consists of four main islands and several thousand smaller ones. The people use chopsticks to eat their food, and the country gets many earthquakes. What country is it?

Answer: Japan

Japan is also called 'Land of the Rising Sun', and its name in Japanese is 'Nihon', or 'Nippon'. Northern Japan was hit by a very large earthquake in 2011, that produced a tsunami (very large, fast ocean wave), that killed many people, and affected many countries with a Pacific Ocean shoreline.
6. This country is in South America, and was home to the Incas for over 300 years. Cotahuasi Canyon is also there- it is the deepest canyon in the world- and Lake Titicaca is not far away, on its southern border with Bolivia. What country, the third largest in South America, is it?

Answer: Peru

Only Brazil and Argentina are larger than Peru. It is just south of the equator and is where the mighty Amazon River starts from.
Cotahuasi Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA, over 3,300 metres!
Peru is also known for the mysterious markings on the earth called the Nazca lines. They are enormous drawings and designs, that can only be seen properly from high up in the air.

Fun fact- A popular gift on New Years Eve in Peru is a pair of yellow underpants!
7. This very large country used to be part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) until that Union ceased to exist in 1991. It has the largest lake and the longest border in the world. It is neighbours with Poland and North Korea. What huge country is it?

Answer: Russia

Russia (or Russian Federation) is the biggest country in the world. It covers 11 time zones, and has more than 1/8th of the land on Earth. Lake Baikal is the largest lake, by volume, in the world- there is more water there than in all of the American Great Lakes.
8. The highest mountain in the world is Mt Everest, which is in Nepal. The second-tallest mountain is called Mount Godwin-Austen and is about 1500 kilometres from Everest. What country, with its capital at Islamabad, is Mount Godwin-Austen in?

Answer: Pakistan

Mount Godwin-Austen is also known as K2, and is only about 200 metres smaller than Everest. It is in the far north of Pakistan, on the border with China. It is considered one of the most dangerous mountains to climb, with many people losing their lives in the attempt.

Pakistan is very good at cricket, and especially at field hockey. They have won several Olympic medals, and also World Cup trophies.
9. This small country is in the Pacific Ocean. The famous explorer, Captain James Cook, visited there in 1773, and called them 'The Friendly Islands'. It is the last of the Pacific nations to have a king or queen, and the country's name means 'south', in its own language. What country is it?

Answer: Tonga

Tonga is a string of islands between New Zealand and Hawaii. The population is approximately 100,000 people. In 1963, Tonga issued a set of postage stamps that were round, and very colourful. They were the world's first self-adhesive issues, and I have a couple in my collection. I also have Tongan stamps shaped like bananas!

Hawaii used to have royalty, but Queen Liliʻuokalani was overthrown in 1893, by businessmen backed by the US government.

Philippines and New Zealand are both quite a lot larger than Tonga.
10. This island country is off the south eastern coast of Africa, and was previously known as the Malagasy Republic. It is home to many unique types of wildlife, including lemurs and varieties of chameleons. Its capital is Antananarivo- what country is it?

Answer: Madagascar

Madagascar was colonised by France in 1897, and declared itself independent in 1960. Its population in 2014 was 22 million, with many people living in poverty.

Seychelles are a small island group, just south of the equator and both Namibia and Zambia are on the African mainland.
