Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before we even know what Horcruxes are, we have sighted many of them. Which Horcrux did we see first in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"?

Answer: the ring

We see this ring in two different places. First of all, it is on Dumbledore's good hand. Dumbledore had gone to the ruins of the Gaunt's house, stolen the ring, and destroyed it. It is also the first to be seen in the memories that Dumbledore shows to Harry.

This memory is one of Bob Ogden's about visiting the Gaunts, Voldemort's relations. Immediately after seeing the ring, we are introduced to the locket.
2. The diary of Tom Marvolo Riddle is the very first Horcrux that we encounter in the Harry Potter series. Who was the person Harry gave it to at the end of book 2?

Answer: Lucius Malfoy

At the end of 'The Chamber of Secrets', Harry give Lucius Malfoy back the diary and rightly accuses him of giving it to Ginny. Although it could never be proven, Harry knew he was right. In giving back the diary, Harry was also able to set Dobby the house-elf free.
3. Many years before Voldemort found it and turned it into a Horcrux, Slytherin's locket was still in the possession of Merope Gaunt, alone in London. She was so desperate that she sold it to Caractacus Burke of Borgin And Burke's for how much money?

Answer: 10 galleons

Burke, being the selfish and greedy person that he is, laughed about ripping her off and claimed that it was the best deal that he ever made. Merope would stay in London until the birth of Voldemort and her death at the Orphanage.
4. Voldemort wanted to find objects from the four founders of Hogwarts to make into Horcruxes. Undoubtedly, he thought they would be added protection. One of these artifacts was Helga Hufflepuff's finely wrought cup. How many handles were on this magical golden cup?

Answer: 2

This cup is indeed described as having two handles and to have an engraved badger, the symbol of Hufflepuff. Voldemort stole it, along with the locket, from Hepzibah Smith. Voldemort made her house-elf take the blame, and both he and these artifacts disappeared.
5. The way that Voldemort acquired three of the objects he used to make into Horcruxes is very similar. Which three were taken in the same way?

Answer: ring, cup, and locket

Both of these instances are very similar. Voldemort murdered someone, and then took the object he desired. Both times, someone else claimed they had committed the crime. Voldemort implanted false memories into Hokey the house-elf and Morfin Gaunt to make them truly believe that they had murdered the people. It was a successful move for Voldemort until Dumbledore found the true memories.
6. The diary Horcrux was responsible for reopening the Chamber of Secrets in Harry's second year. It was given to Ginny by Lucius Malfoy inside of which one of her books?

Answer: Transfiguration

Lucius put it into her book when they were at Flourish and Blott's. Once Ginny found the diary, she started writing in it. The Horcrux of Lord Voldemort was able to posses Ginny and cause her to open the Chamber once again.
7. In the end of Half-Blood Prince, Harry and Dumbledore went to find the locket Horcrux. When Harry sees the locket after Dumbledore's death he realizes that it is a fake, and it has been left with a note. This note reads, "To the Dark Lord. I know I will be dead long before you read this, but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your _______. I have stolen the ______ Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face ______ in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more. R._.B." What goes in the blanks?

Answer: secret, real, death, A

Upon realizing that the locket was a fake, Harry feels horrible. He knows that Dumbledore weakened himself for a fake. From then on, Harry kept the locket with him as a reminder of what it had cost and what remained still to do. Many people believe that this "R.A.B." refers to Regulus Black, Sirius's brother. Whoever it is, Harry must find out in order to destroy this particular piece of soul.
8. Hepzibah Smith bought Slytherin's locket and Hufflepuff's cup from Borgin and Burke's.

Answer: False

Hepzibah only bought the locket from Borgin and Burke's. When she shows it to Tom, she mentions that they would love to get it back. Hufflepuff's cup, however, had been passed down in her family because Hepzibah was a distant relative of Helga Hufflepuff.
9. A Horcrux, by definition, is a receptacle in which a Dark wizard has hidden a part of his what in order to attain immortality?

Answer: soul

Voldemort has indeed been splitting his soul. This is the way that J.K. Rowling has described Horcruxes on her site. It is very Dark magic to create a Horcrux, which shows us how evil Tom Riddle truly is.
10. At Hogwarts, Horcruxes are a banned subject. Hermione searches the entire library for information, but is only able to find a slight mention in which book?

Answer: Magick Most Evile

Assuming that Hermione has read the whole lot of them, this was the only book in the whole library that said anything about Horcruxes. It referred to Horcruxes in the introduction, but it only said that they were the "wickedest of magical inventions" and refused to say anything more.
