Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start in the refrigerator's salad drawer. What is this fruit that you might also use to make sauce for spaghetti?

Answer: Tomato

The tomato is not a vegetable but a fruit or berry. It is a member of the nightshade plant family that also includes flowers such as the petunia but also other foodstuffs such as the potato and eggplant. They were first grown in the Andes of South America.
2. Here is something else you might find in the salad drawer. You might use this in a salad or for making sandwiches. What is it?

Answer: Cucumber

The cucumber is a member of the gourd family of plants that also includes pumpkins, melons and squash. Usually eaten raw in salads or sandwiches, you can also pickle them. They were originally grown in Southern Asia.

While a courgette/zucchini looks a lot like a cucumber, these particular cucumbers have the small prickly projections on their skin that are typical of cucumbers used for pickling. Courgettes/zucchini are smooth skinned.
3. Still in the salad drawer, you might use this either in your salad or to keep your pet rabbit happy. What is this?

Answer: Lettuce

Lettuce is a leaf vegetable that is part of the sunflower plant family that also includes flowers such as daisies and asters. It was first grown in ancient Egypt, where its seeds were used for making oil and the leaves were just thrown away.
4. You might find this fruit in your refrigerator if you are lucky. You can eat them with cream, make jam from them or turn them into sorbet. What are they?

Answer: Raspberries

Raspberries are an edible fruit that comes from the rose plant family that also includes the blackberry and the strawberry. Believe it or not, raspberries are not always red: they can also be black, purple, blue, gold or yellow.
5. Made by adding bacteria to fermenting milk, this can be eaten plain, or with all types of fruit, and even frozen. What is it?

Answer: Yogurt

The basic process is to heat the milk to around 80 degrees Centigrade (to kill unwanted bacteria), then cool the milk to 45 degrees, add the bacterial culture, maintain the temperature for 4-7 hours and, voilą, there you have it, yogurt.
Not only is it tasty, but it provides the body with calcium, protein, riboflavin and vitamins B6 and B12 (which are apparently good for you).
6. It can be hard or soft, white, blue or spotted with numerous other colors. Sometimes it comes with its skin on and some has holes in it. You can eat it straight from the packet, put it in a sandwich, on toast, use it in a sauce, or even make a cake out of it. If you're a fan of the Green Bay Packers you can apparently even wear it on your head. What is it?

Answer: Cheese

Cheese is one of the most versatile things you will find in your fridge. There are hundreds of different types, all with their own particular tastes. The types of ways it can be used, from starters to deserts, are perhaps even more numerous than the number of different cheeses.
Most cheese are made from cow's milk, but there are also cheeses made from the milk of ewes, goats, sheep and even buffaloes! Yes, buffalo -- mozzarella, a cheese from southern Italy, is made from the milk of the Italian buffalo.
7. This type of food is what is called a protein. There are many different types, but all have one thing in common -- they all came out of the water before they ended up in your refrigerator. What is this type of food?

Answer: Seafood

There are many types of seafood -- fish (numerous types), crustaceans (crabs, shrimp, lobster, crayfish), molluscs (clams, oysters, scallops), echinoderms (sea urchins) as well as some edible sea plants such as seaweed.
By the time it reaches your plate, your fish may have been fried, baked, or boiled and it may well have been coated with batter or breadcrumbs. In Great Britain, the chances are that whatever kind of fish you are eating, it will be served with chips (or what Americans call French fries).
8. When you look in your refrigerator this drink will probably be in a carton. It may be made out of either fruits or vegetables. It will usually be served in a cup or glass. It is the ideal way to start the morning. What is this?

Answer: Juice

The best juice is made by squeezing a fruit or vegetable directly into a glass and drinking it with nothing added. When you squeeze something like an orange you also get what is known as pulp ('lumpy bits' to you and me) in your juice, but don't be put off by those. If you really insist on your juice with the pulp removed, you can buy cartons of juice that way too.
Juice also comes in other forms, such as smoothies or frozen into popsicles.
9. This question is a little different, as you probably won't find a pig when you open your refrigerator. Which of the following items that you are likely to find in your fridge does NOT come from a pig?

Answer: Eggs

And the answer is sausages. Really, it is. You've never eaten pig's eggs? They're delicious... ok, just kidding. You're right, no matter how long you make a pig sit in a hutch it will never lay an egg.
However, bacon, ham and pork sausages do all come from the unfortunate porker. So, too, do various terrines and pates, pork chops, loin of pork, pork ribs and numerous other things from which you can make a really tasty meal.
10. If you have an older brother, the next time you go to visit him, take a look in his refrigerator. It won't be like any refrigerator you've seen before. Apart from a piece of moldy, 6-month-old cheese, the chances are there will only be one other thing there. What is it that can be found in great quantity and variety in any self-respecting student's refrigerator?

Answer: Beer

You can even buy refrigerators designed just for keeping beer cold. (They don't get as cold as a regular refrigerator, so they are useless for keeping things like milk or cheese fresh, but they are ideal for keeping beer at just the right temperature.) Don't be fooled if the contents of your brother's refrigerator don't look just like the picture -- beer comes in cans as well as bottles.
