Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This girl was American. She attended the school in its early years. She had a reputation for using a lot of slang, which got her into trouble. Her close friend was another American, Evadne Lannis. Who was she?

Answer: Cornelia Flower

Cornelia was responsible for a lot of the mischief that went on in the school. She did become a sensible senior, though, rising to the position of Head Girl when the school was in Guernsey. She later married and had two daughters, although not much was heard of her once she had left the school.
2. This Irish pupil was adopted by the middles of the school, when she was found wandering around the lakeside following the death of her mother. She was a leading light in the school after it has left the Tyrol, then returned to be the History mistress.

Answer: Biddy O'Ryan

Biddy was a wild middle, but became sensible and hard-working as she went up the school. She went to Oxford University and then to Australia for a few years before returning to teach at the school. She was a favourite mistress until she married Dr. Courvoisier and left the school.
3. This girl won a scholarship to the Chalet School. She was a very pleasant girl, but somewhat shy on her arrival at school. She was a close friend of Len Maynard. What was her name?

Answer: Rosamund Lilley

Rosamund was surprised to find that she had won the scholarship to the Chalet School. She was not especially pleased with the idea of going to school in Switzerland, so far from her home, but she soon settled down and made friends there. She became Head Girl of the school.
4. I was the youngest Chalet girl for many years, having come to the Chalet school when I was six. I was very delicate and my health was always a worry to the Sanatorium doctors. Who am I?

Answer: Robin Humphries

Robin's mother died when she was young, and her father a few years later. She was adopted by Madge and Jo always referred to her as her sister. She did outgrow her early delicacy, although she was ill when she left university and began settlement work. She became a nun and went to Canada.
5. This Chaletian was one of the school's musical geniuses. She came to the school on the death of her father, and had a few problems settling into an environment where she had to put other people before her love of music. Which Chalet Girl is this?

Answer: Nina Rutherford

Nina's father died whilst saving the life of a child who was drowning. On her way from Italy to her cousins in England, Nina met the girls of the Chalet School and her uncle decided to sent her to school with them the following term. She wrote a piece of music for the birth of Cecil Maynard, and went on to become a famous concert pianist.
6. I am closely related to Madge Russell and so began my school life with a very inflated sense of my own importance. I was not as clever as some of my friends, but loved needlework. Who am I?

Answer: Sybil Russell

Sybil injured her sister, Josette, and this was the turning point for her. Before the accident she had been very aware of her own beauty and importance as the daughter of the founder of the school. Afterwards, she became much more pleasant and responsible.
7. I was the daughter of a vicar, who brought me up to be 'a gentleman'. I was famous for my beautiful, hand-made dolls' houses, which always raised a lot of money for the school fetes.

Answer: Tom Gay

Tom's real name was Lucinda Muriel, but she thought this a very soppy name and preferred to be called Tom. She went to work with underprivileged boys in London after leaving school. It was through her that Rosamund Lilley won a scholarship to the Chalet School.
8. This Chalet girl came from Australia, sent to school for being a thoroughly disobedient girl. She remained a problem for the school for most of her years there. Who was she?

Answer: Emerence Hope

Emerence became firm friends with Margot Maynard, and the two of them were responsible for much of the trouble in the school during their time there. Finally, Emerence left school and returned to Australia, but stayed in touch with Margot.
9. I was so desperate to go to school that I ran away to the Chalet School! I loved being at school, and was thankful when my parents said that I might stay there. Who am I?

Answer: Carola Johnstone

Carola had travelled around with her aunt for so long that she was fed up with being forever on the move. She met Biddy O'Ryan and learned of the school from her, so she planned to go there regardless of her aunt's plans. She became a steady and reliable prefect.
10. This Chaletian attended the school when it was in the Austrian Tyrol. She was desperately unhappy, so she ran away. Unfortunately, she had a dreadful accident and spent months recovering. Who was she?

Answer: Eustacia Benson

After her accident, Eustacia had time to think, and discovered that she did not like the way she had behaved. She made big changes in herself and became a true Chalet girl. She returned to live with the Maynard family in Switzerland, and even taught for a while in the school. She was a well-known classical scholar.
