Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Penultimate Peril" begins in a moving taxi, taking them to the Hotel Denouement. Which Snicket sibling is the driver?

Answer: Kit

Kit was introduced in the ending of the previous installment in the series, "The Grim Grotto". Jacques sadly died in the seventh book, "The Vile Village", while Lemony is the author of the series and doesn't make an appearance within it.
2. At brunch, the Baudelaires are told they will be concierges at the Hotel Denouement, in addition to what other role/title?

Answer: Flaneurs

While all these roughly mean the same thing, flâneur refers to someone who loafs, loungers, strolls or saunters. Interestingly, it was the poetry of a real-life Charles Baudelaire that was drawn upon to bring scholarly interest to the term.
3. Upon arriving at the Hotel Denouement, the Baudelaires are each assigned separate tasks. Violet's task takes her to the sunbathing salon on the rooftop, where she encounters which rude former classmate?

Answer: Carmelita Spats

"The Penultimate Peril" is the fourth book in which the Baudelaire siblings have had to deal with Carmelita Spats, after "The Austere Academy", "The Slippery Slope" and "The Grim Grotto". She is rowing a boat (currently named after her) in the swimming pool.
4. Klaus's task requires him to take his former sawmill colleague Sir (from "The "Miserable Mill") to the sauna. Which other workmate is accompanying him?

Answer: Charles

Phil was the optimistic man they met there, but he disappeared suddenly after they were reunited in the previous book, "The Grim Grotto". The other two are made up.

They previously encountered Sir and Charles while working at the Lucky Smells Lumbermill in Paltryville, where all the workers were (illegally) paid in coupons. Apparently, this is still the case.
5. Sunny's task takes her to a restaurant as she is accompanying some former teachers. Which type of food is served at the restaurant?

Answer: Indian

The Indian restaurant is being run by Hal, the visually impaired man they met during "The Hostile Hospital". The food, sadly, is not up to scratch.
6. Afterwards, the Baudelaires rejoin each other, where one of the identical sibling hotel owners joins them - which one?

Answer: Dewey

Dewey is the third Denouement sibling, who doesn't get as much recognition as his brothers. He tells the children he has spent his whole ife collecting V.F.D. secrets.
7. Later on in the evening, the mysterious "J.S." arrives by taxi. Who exactly is "J.S."?

Answer: Both of these people

Both Jerome Squalor (from "The Ersatz Elevator") and Justice Strauss (from "The Bad Beginning") believe they are the J.S. being contacted. Justice Strauss has been contacting the High Court about the Baudelaires, while Jerome has written a book about them - "Odious Lusting After Finance".
8. Soon Count Olaf joins the children, threatening violence. Sadly, something happens - who is hit by the harpoon discharged by the gun?

Answer: Dewey

The injury proves to be fatal, which is very sad, especially after it is revealed Dewey was in love with Kit Snicket, and was the father of the baby she is currently pregnant with.
9. At the trial held the following afternoon, who does Count Olaf kidnap?

Answer: Justice Strauss

It turns out the High Court judges Justice Strauss was conferring with were actually associates of Count Olaf the whole time. This is how the children have been tracked by Count Olaf the whole time.
10. At the end of the book, the Baudelaire children make their escape from the hotel by way of the rooftop. Inside what object do they leave?

Answer: Boat

They leave in a boat, with parachutes being used to slow the rate of falling. They land in the ocean, unaware of where it leads...
