Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You get to the gym for your first basketball game, and your team is ready for the game to start. How many players from one team will play at one time?

Answer: 5

Once the five players on the court get tired, the players on the bench can come into the game. If you're on the bench, get ready to come in!
2. What should you do if you are on the bench, and not in the game?

Answer: Watch the game and cheer on your teammates

If you're not playing, you can cheer on your teammates who are in the game. This can help them play better! Don't worry; your coach will put you in eventually!
3. You're finally in the game, and the other team has the ball. If you have a good coach, what will he probably tell you to do?

Answer: Stay close to one player on the other team

Keeping up with one player on the team with the ball is called "guarding" a player. When the player you're guarding gets the ball, you should be ready to defend him! If you're good at playing defense, you may be able to steal the ball before the player you're guarding gets it!
4. The other team took a shot and missed, and you catch the ball! What is this called?

Answer: A rebound

If a shot is taken and missed, and a player catches the ball on the way down, this is called a rebound. Once you've rebounded the ball, your team has control of the ball and you can pass, dribble or even shoot the ball if you're close to your basket!
5. One of your teammates has the ball. What should you do?

Answer: Go to an open spot where he or she can pass the ball to you

If your teammate has the ball, your job is to help him (or her) out. The best way to do this is to give him the option of passing the ball to you. If you go too close to him, the area will get crowded and the defense has a good chance to steal the ball!
6. Your teammate passed the ball to you, and you want to move to another spot on the court. What do you need to do?

Answer: Bounce the ball while moving

When you bounce the ball on the floor, it is called dribbling. When you are moving on the court with the ball, you must dribble, or else the referee will call traveling and give the other team the ball! A good time to start dribbling is when you want to move towards the basket with the ball in order to take a shot closer to the basket.
7. During play, you move to about a meter from the basket, and shoot the ball into it! How many points does your team get?

Answer: 2

If you get the ball into the basket while play is going on, you have scored a goal and get two points for your team! When you dribble towards the basket and shoot, it is called a lay-up. The best way to make a lay-up is to bounce the ball off the backboard so it goes into the basket!
8. You try to make another basket, but a player on the other team makes contact with you. The referee calls a foul and you go to the free-throw line for two shots. How many points is each shot worth?

Answer: 1

When a player contacts a player on the other team, it is called a foul. The referee will blow his or her whistle, and if you were fouled while you were trying to shoot the ball and didn't get a goal, you get two shots from the free-throw line. Each one is worth one point -- make them count!
9. When you're taken out of the game, you feel really tired and thirsty. Which of the following should you drink?

Answer: Water

When you're thirsty after having run for a while, the best thing to do is sit down, catch your breath and drink water. Chances are you'll be sweating a lot, so you need to get some fluids in your body!
10. Your team won! After the game, you talk to the players on the other team. What do you say to them?

Answer: Congratulate them for playing well

It is good sportsmanship to line up, shake the other team's hands, and say "good game", meaning that they played well. This should be the most important thing to do during the entire game, because nobody likes to lose!
