Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If the 13th day in a month falls on a particular day of the week, that day is often considered unlucky. Which day of the week is it?

Answer: Friday

The fear of Friday the 13th is paraskavedekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. President Franklin Roosevelt would never travel on the 13th day of a month, even if it wasn't a Friday.
2. It is considered unlucky by some to have 13 guests at a dinner table. In the "Harry Potter" books, one of the professors pointed out that there were 13 people at the Christmas dinner, and said what?

Answer: The first person to leave the table would die first.

This superstition may come from Christianity in relation to the Last Supper. At the Last Supper, 12 disciples and Jesus (making 13) dined at a table and Jesus died soon after.
3. "13" is the name of a 2010 film. It was a remake of which 2005 French film? (Hint: the second word of the film is "13" in Georgian)

Answer: 13 Tzameti

The 2010 film "13" (not to be confused with the 2003 film "Thirteen") was directed by Gela Babluani. Gela also directed "13 Tzameti".
4. Which of these ways to write "13" is not correctly matched?

Answer: Dutch - Trece

The Dutch word for 13 is "dertien", and "trece" is Spanish for 13. In Roman numerals, "X" is ten, and "I" is one, so XIII is 13. In binary code, only two digits are used, zero and one. The last digit is worth one, the penultimate two, the anti-penultimate four, etc., so 1101 stands for 8+4+0+1 (13).
5. What is the square root of 13 rounded to the nearest whole number? (Try to do this without a calculator.)

Answer: 4

A square number is a number multiplied by itself, for instance 2 squared means 2 times 2 which is 4.

The nearest square numbers to 13 are 9 (3 squared) and 16 (4 squared). The difference between 13 and 9 is 4, and the difference between 13 and 16 is 3, which is less. This means 4 is the square root of 13 rounded to the nearest whole number. The square root of 13 is roughly 3.605.
6. Who was the 13th president of the United States of America?

Answer: Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore was president from July 9, 1850 to March 4, 1853. George Washington was the first president of the U.S.A, Franklin D Roosevelt was the 32nd and William "Bill" Clinton was the 42nd.
7. Where were the Olympic Games held in 1913?

Answer: They weren't held in 1913

The Olympic Games are held every four years, but have the summer and the winter games alternating every two years, only the even years, such as 1948 and 2008. The Olympics Games were held in Stockholm for the 1912 Summer Olympics. Athens was the host of the Summer Olympics twice: in 1896 and 2004. Paris held the Summer Olympics in 1924.
8. The number 13 was considered to be a sacred number by which of these cultures?

Answer: Aztec

The Aztecs had 13 days in a week, and called this a trecena. They had 260 days in a year, which were divided into 20 trecenas. A different god/goddess ruled each trecena, and Tlazolteotl ruled the 13th trecena.
9. In the US, what is PG-13?

Answer: A movie rating

The American motion picture rating PG-13 refers to "Parents Strongly Cautioned - Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13". Other ratings in the US include "G" (General Audiences) and "R" (Restricted - Under 17 Requires Accompanying Parent Or Adult Guardian).
