Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not counting leap years, what is the 300th day of the Gregorian calendar year?

Answer: October 27th

The Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1582 to correct the Julian calendar, which had been used since Julius Caesar introduced it in 46 BC. The Julian calendar was 365.25 days long, and Pope Gregory XIII's adjustment changed the year to 365.2425 days long, or more precisely, 365 days, 5 hours 49 minutes and 12 seconds.

The painting, entitled "October" was created by French artist James Tissot in 1877.
2. The film "300" was released in 2007, telling a glorified version of the Battle of Thermopylae. What is the title of the 2014 sequel?

Answer: 300: Rise of an Empire

The 2007 movie "300" was based on the Frank Miller comic serial of the same name, published in 1998. Miller's comic was originally released in five parts, with the titles "Honor", "Duty", "Glory", "Combat" and "Victory". The comics were, in turn, inspired by the 1962 film "The 300 Spartans".

"300" presents a fantastical version of the historical battle, where Spartan King Leonidas leads a hand-picked force of 300 men to face the invading 300,000-strong Persian army, led by the 'god-king' Xerxes.
3. What auto manufacturer has put out a number of different '300' models over the decades, beginning in 1955?

Answer: Chrysler

Between 1955 and 1965, Chrysler manufactured their 300 letter series of high performance luxury cars - one letter per year (not counting 'a' and skipping 'i') - 300, 300B, 300C, etc., up to 300L.

A second model of 300 began production in 1962 that was technically unrelated to the 300 letter series mentioned above. It was manufactured as a replacement model for the Chrysler Windsor after its discontinuation in 1961.

Two limited edition 300s were produced in the '70s - one in 1970, called the Hurst 300 (about 500 produced), and another in 1979, with a production run of 5,500.

More recently, following the merger of Daimler Benz and the Chrysler Corporation, the 300M was produced from 1998 until 2004. A new model (with various variations) began production in 2004, commonly called the 300C. Production continued through Chrysler's financial difficulties and ownership changes.
4. In the year AD 300, there were two Roman co-emperors, whose reigns ended the 'Crisis of the Third Century'. Maximian was one; who was the other?

Answer: Diocletian

Caesar Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus Augustus had lowly beginnings, but achieved status through his time in the Roman military, where he rose to the position of cavalry commander to the Emperor Carus (the 48th Roman Emperor).

Carus named his son Carinus as co-emperor, ruling the western portion of the empire. Soon after, Carus died, and another son Numerian joined Carinus as co-emperor (of the eastern portion of the empire). Numerian died of an infection while returning to Rome from the east.

Numerian's general staff and tribunes elected Diocletian as his successor. Carinus tried to dispute it, but after Diocletian defeated him at the Battle of the Margus. Despite having the larger force, Carinus lost and was killed in battle (it is surmised that one of his own officers did it).

Diocletian was emperor between AD 284 and 305, appointing his fellow officer Maximian as Augustus of the west in 286, and himself as Augustus of the east.
5. In 1867, a book was published by George Routledge and Sons collecting three hundred fables ascribed to which Ancient Greek fabulist?

Answer: Aesop

"Three Hundred Aesop's Fables" is by no means the only such collection of fables that has been published. Even this 1867 publication was republished over the next few years at least two more times, with more or fewer accompanying illustrations. In this edition, the fables were translated from the Greek by George Fyler Townsend, with 114 illustrations by Harrison Weir.

The illustration shown here was actually published in an 1855 edition of French poet and fabulist Jean de La Fontaine's book entitled simply "Fables".
6. 'The Old Three Hundred' were a group of American colonists that settled in the Mexican State of Texas between 1824 and 1828. Who received the land grant from the Mexican government to establish this colony?

Answer: Stephen Fuller Austin

Stephen F. Austin's father Moses was the man who originally made an arrangement with the Spanish government to receive the land grant (1820), but then he passed away unexpectedly in 1821 from pneumonia, leaving his son to carry on what he started.

Stephen Austin arrived in San Antonio, only to discover that Mexico had just gained independence from Spain (Sept. 27th, 1821), and the arrangement that his father had made with the Spanish Crown was no longer valid. It took three years, but Stephen finally managed to procure a similar arrangement from the new Mexican government, and he began a new era for Texas.

Stephen F. Austin became known as 'The Father of Texas' for his efforts.
7. In five-pin bowling, a perfect game (throwing a strike in every frame) is 300 points.

Answer: False

It is in TEN-pin bowling that a perfect game is 300 points. Each pin is worth one point, and you can earn a possible three strikes per frame. That is, after you throw a strike with your first ball on a frame, the next two balls (in the second and/or third frames) still count towards the score in the first frame. This applies to each subsequent frame. (10 frames x 30 points = 300 points).

Five-pin bowling has different values for the pins. The headpin is worth five points, the two pins on either side of the headpin are three points each, and the two corner pins are worth two points each, for a total of 15 points per frame. Thus, a perfect game in five-pin bowling is 450 points.
8. The Challenger 300 super-midsize business jet is manufactured by what Canadian aerospace and transportation company?

Answer: Bombardier Aerospace

The Bombadier Challenger 300 was originally given the name 'Bombadier Continental' when the project was unveiled at the 1999 Paris Air Show. The aircraft went into service in 2004.

Bombardier Aerospace is a division of Bombardier, Inc., which is headquartered in Dorval, Québec. The Challenger 300 is manufactured in the United States at their plant in Wichita, Kansas.
9. Which of these historic Canadian fortresses (originally British and French), celebrated their 300th anniversary first?

Answer: The Fortress of Louisbourg (NS)

The Fortress of Louisbourg grew around the settlement of Havre à l'Anglois, which was founded in 1713. It took approximately 20 years for the walls to be built (1720-1740), but they only worked so well. In 1745 Louisbourg was captured by British colonists, and used as a bargaining chip in treaty negotiations, returning to French hands in 1748. It fell again to the British in 1758 during the Seven Years' War, at which point the British engineers demolished the fortifications.

The site was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1920, but restoration of the town and fortress did not begin until the 1960s. Official celebrations for the 300th anniversary occurred throughout the year in 2013.

Fort George was constructed in 1749 by the British to counter the French presence at Louisbourg.

La Citadelle de Québec was constructed following the fall of Louisbourg in 1745, but its present star-shaped fortifications were constructed by the British in the 1820s

Fort Henry was constructed during the War of 1812 in response to American aggression. That fort was demolished to build a second, better one in the 1830s.
10. 'LIII' isn't the answer, so tell me what really is 300 in Roman numerals?

Answer: CCC

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000

The Roman numeral system has morphed somewhat over the centuries, and sometimes there is confusion over the use of some of the letters. For instance, sometimes V or L aren't used, so instead of writing VIII (8), you could write IIIIIIII. And sometimes, instead of using XC (90), one could write LXXXX.

Generally, the repetition of letters is limited to three, so writing 1-10 would look like this: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X. And, of course, writing 300 would be CCC.
