Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When I call 911 they always ask for my address. Should I give it to them?

Answer: Yes

911 must verify the address on their screen to ensure quick & proper response to the correct address. Therefore, one of the first questions you should be asked is your address. Some 911 centers receive your address when you call (this is called enhanced 911 or E-911) but some only receive your phone number. Even if the center has E911, it is imperative for the operator to verify that the information they have is correct. Failure to do so could result in emergency vehicles being sent to the wrong address.

It is one of the first questions asked in case the line is disconnected and because they can begin an immediate dispatch even as they speak with you on the phone.
2. If my electricity goes out, should I call 911 to report it?

Answer: No

911 has nothing to do with your electricity. Call your electric company.
3. Yesterday I bought this beautiful flower arrangement for my porch. I woke up this morning and my flowers had been stolen. Whom do I call?

Answer: Non-emergency police number

If you just have to report it, then you need to call the non-emergency police phone number. 911 is for "emergencies" and you are tying up a life-saving line if you call about flowers. My suggestion is to call your florist.
4. If I have a non-VoIP landline phone in my house, but my service is not activated, then I can't call 911.

Answer: False

If your phone is plugged into a jack, you can access 911 even if you don't have a service connected. You can also dial 911 on cell phones that are not activated.
5. If I am away from home and have an emergency, I can use my cell phone to dial 911.

Answer: True

Calling 911 will receive your cell phone number and will get the location of the cell tower your call came from, but they do not know your exact location. It is imperative that you stay on the line and tell the operator where you are.
6. I desperately need to make a long-distance call but I'm having trouble with my phone. Should I call 911 and ask them to patch me through?

Answer: No

Do I need to explain this one? Call the phone company operator.
7. My carbon monoxide detector is going off but I don't see or smell anything. Should I call 911?

Answer: Yes

By all means call 911 and they will dispatch the fire department and gas company to inspect your house. Then leave all doors and windows closed and get everyone out of the house. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can kill you. Don't take a chance - call 911!
8. My electricity went off during the night and all my clocks are showing the wrong time. I should call 911 to find out the correct time.

Answer: False

Remember, 911 is for emergencies. They will not entertain this type of call because it is tying up a life-saving emergency line. Call a friend.
9. I was cooking supper, became distracted and the next thing I know my pan of grease was on fire. Which of these actions should I have taken?

Answer: call 911

Call 911. Let the fire department handle it. Much better that you have a little structural damage than a loss of life or severe burns. And never put water on a grease fire! A grease fire can usually be put out easily by putting a lid on the pan but I cannot suggest you take this action due to the risk of severe burns.

If you have a fire blanket use this to smother the flames (cuts the supply of oxygen) and use a kitchen fire extinguisher. You may be able to avoid calling 911.
10. Which of the following are legitimate reasons to call 911 in the US?

Answer: all of these

People have called 911 for every example given in this quiz and then some. If you have a fire, police, or medical emergency call 911 immediately! If your situation is not an emergency, please call someone else.
