Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these controversial 20th century artists painted the 'Large Sooty Nude' ca. 1944?

Answer: Dubuffet

Jean Dubuffet was the leader of a French art movement entitled 'Art Brut'. Explorations were made of the artwork of children and the mentally disabled by these artists, in order to discover alternatives to what were seen as the rigid and conservative traditional asthetic mores.
2. Which photographer of the Great Depression period took the famous shot entitled 'White Angel Breadline' ca. 1933?

Answer: Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange's photography elicits in me very powerful feelings of empathy for the downtrodden. She is perhaps the best known of the photographers who were active during the American Great Depression of the 1930s.
3. Which of the following parts of the body contains the most bones?

Answer: Hands

Each finger contains three bones, while the thumb contains two. These are in addition to these, there are 15 additional bones in your hand (29 in all!) When both hands are counted, nearly 1/3 of the body's 206 bones are accounted for.
4. What is the Italian comic opera form of the 18th century called?

Answer: Buffa

Monteverdi is probably the originator of the 'buffa' form, which stresses the unusual, more or less a farcical form.
5. The name of which well-known symbol in Greek means 'tail-biter'?

Answer: Ouroboros

The 'ouroboros' is literally a 'snake eating its tail', the name of which derives from the Greek. The symbol is designed to depict wholeness, and is an alternative to the lemniscate, aka the 'infinity sign'.
