Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's look at the popular mnemonic to remind us what colours make up your typical rainbow. "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain". Now, can you tell me which Richard this mnemonic refers to?

Answer: Richard Plantagenet

The battle referred to in this popular mnemonic is the battle of Wakefield in December 1460. This was one of the major battles in the Wars of the Roses where the houses of Lancaster and York fought for the English throne.

Although Richard of York (3rd Duke of York) never became king, both his sons (Edward IV and Richard III) did and they all lived during the War of the Roses. Richard III was the last English king to die in battle.
2. Greek mythology tells us the rainbow is a link between earth and the heavens. Which goddess was said to have sent the rainbow?

Answer: Iris

Iris is often portrayed as providing a link between the gods and mortals. There are many stories behind the rainbow. The bible says that following the 40 days and 40 nights of rain the rainbow was a promise from God to earth saying that never again would there be such a flood.
3. RED. Red is one of the most common colours on the flags of the world. Which one of these countries flags does not contain the colour red?

Answer: Estonia

Estionia's flag is blue, black and white. The colour red is symbolic on many world flags. Common on African flags, the colour red represents the struggle for freedom from colonial powers.

In other instances the colour red represents the political stance of the country such as the red flag of the USSR which represented the Soviet fatherland as well as being the colour of revolution.
4. ORANGE. The popular 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" was adapted from the novel of the same name by which writer?

Answer: Anthony Burgess

Taken from a cockney expression "as queer as clockwork orange" the novel was first published in 1962. The book dealt with aversion therapy and conditioning with Alex - a violent prisoner who was then released after the treatment.
When the book was first published in America, the publisher deleted the original final chapter, which told us how Alex grew up, got married and had kids.
5. YELLOW. Which yellow fruit, representing friendship and longevity in Pagan religions, was once used to make lips redder and prevent wrinkles?

Answer: Lemon

Rich in vitamin C, lemons can be used as antiseptics. Also, in the past, lemons were used as a treatment for epilepsy, as toothpaste and even as invisible ink.
6. GREEN. Possibly the most famous green critter is Kermit the Frog. Along with the other "Muppets" Kermit starred in many film adaptations of classic books. Which character did Kermit play in "Muppet Treasure Island"?

Answer: Captain Abraham Smollett

The character's name was Captain Alexander Smollett in the original novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins were part of the human cast and Benjamina Gunn (Benjamin Gunn in the original novel) was played by the boisterous miss Piggy.

Making his debut in 1955, Kermit the Frog was voiced by "Muppet" creator Jim Henson until his death in 1990 when Steve Whitmire took over.
7. BLUE. Known as the blue planet for its vast seas, Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to possess liquid water. However, which other planet has strong mythological ties with water?

Answer: Neptune

Neptune was the Roman god of the sea, with Poseidon as his Greek counterpart.
Neptune is also associated with water due to its deep blue colour.

Although Earth is the only planet known to possess liquid water, it has been shown that Mars has frozen water at its poles and it has been speculated that Europa (one of the moons of Jupiter) is covered in vast ice lakes.
8. INDIGO. Indigo in the common English language is taken from the Greek "indikon", meaning what?

Answer: Dye

The Greek "indikon" came to mean dye due to the deep blue dye commonly used in Greece which came from India.

Although many modern scientists no longer recognise indigo as a separate division in the spectrum, its involvement in school mnemonics suggest it is here to stay.
9. VIOLET. The popular film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was based on the novel by Roald Dahl. In this film each character (apart from Charlie) are dispatched of in some manner. What notable thing happens to the character Violet Beauregarde?

Answer: She swells up and becomes blue

Gum chewing Violet cannot resist the three course dinner gum, despite warnings that it is still in the experimental stage. When she reaches the blueberry pie dessert course - she swells up, turns blue and has to go to the juicing room.
The other options all happen, but to different characters.
Augustus Gloop falls into the river of chocolate in a greedy attempt to eat as much as he can.
Veruca Salt falls down a golden egg tube in protest against being told she cannot take one of the eggs home. It should be noted that in the novel and the 2005 remake it is a nut-sorting room rather that an egg-laying room.
Mike Teavee is shrunk to a tiny size in an attempt to send himself to the other end of the room using one of Willy Wonka's newest inventions.
10. As well as testing if you have a broad spectrum of knowledge, the colours above collectively make up the spectrum of light. Using a glass prism, white light can be refracted so as to produce a spectrum. What characteristic of light allows it to be separated into its constituent colours?

Answer: Wavelength

Visible light can be found in the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light ranges from red light with the longest wavelength to violet light with the shortest wavelength.
The amount of refraction depends on wavelength, which is why a spectrum always goes in the order red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
