Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first stop is in the US state of Missouri. Along the Mississippi River in Mark Twain country, I find locals talking about a hairy biped called the "Missouri Monster". The locals call him by a shortened form of this name. What is the local name of this cryptid?

Answer: Momo

The name "Momo" is an abbreviation of its long name. Mo is the postal abbreviation for the state of Missouri. the other "mo" comes from the first two letters of the word "monster". Thus we get "Momo".

Booboo is Yogi Bear's little hairy sidekick, and while Lau Lau is not a hairy biped, it is a delicious Hawaiian dish made with taro and luau leaves and usually pork.
2. I next fly onto the east coast of the USA. I stop to see a legendary "devil" of a creature that is said to have a head of a horse and large bat-like wings. It is said to be found in the pine barrens, north of Atlantic City, in this US state below New York. After seeing some of the gamblers in Atlantic City, the creature somehow seems less intimidating. What US state allegedly has this devil creature?

Answer: New Jersey

The creature referred to is the "Jersey Devil". It has been reported to be the 13th offspring of a "Mother" Leeds in 18th century New Jersey. It was abandoned and it now roams the pine barrens near Leeds Point, New Jersey. In 1909, there were so many reported sightings of the creature that schools and factories were closed for public safety.

In more modern times, the creature is considered a fun part of New Jersey lore. In fact, the National Hockey League (NHL) team in the state is called the New Jersey Devils.
3. I fly across "the pond" to the UK. I take a train north to Scotland to see if I can find one of the most legendary cryptids of all-time. I'm especially curious, as of early 2014, there are internet reports that "Nessie" is dead. If it's on the internet, it must be true, right? At any rate, what lake in Scotland has been the reported home of this renowned lake monster?

Answer: Loch Ness

The internet rumor has spawned a few expeditions to see if "Nessie" is indeed dead. Of course, due to the many hoaxes at Loch Ness, many believe that there never was a monster in the lake. The oldest story of the monster dates back to the writings "Life of St. Columba" by Adomnan in the 7th century AD.

Loch Awe is the third largest lake in Scotland, and is a popular fishing destination. The other two are my minimal attempts at word-play.
4. Next stop is Africa. I've come to see a legendary pterosaur. According to native legends, this winged reptile is said to cause death if you look at it. Sounds like my lunch yesterday. It has been mainly seen in Zambia. What is the name of this terrifying pterodactyl-like creature?

Answer: Kongamato

According to the book "Cryptids and Other Creepy Creatures" by John D. Wright, a British expedition exploring West Africa had an encounter in Cameroon with the creature. They escaped, according to the story, by diving under water and later reported the creature had "great, black, Dracula-like wings".

The Mothman is of course a giant insect man reportedly found in West Virginia, USA.

Bigfoot is a hairy biped, not a flying cryptid, nor found in Zambia.

Toucan Sam is an advertisement character featured in TV ads for the American sugary cereal Fruit Loops.
5. After a stop at the Arabian Sea to look for flying snakes, I press on to Ulan Bator for a trek into the Gobi Desert to look for some death worms. These large snakelike worms supposedly shoot acid from their rear ends, and have allegedly killed horses and men. In which country am I looking for this creature?

Answer: Mongolia

While some might feel a creature like this can only exist in the land of Oz, many Mongolian herdsmen have reported encounters with it over the years. It is usually described as bright red and two to five feet long (60 - 150 cm).

The first western reference to the creature was in American Professor Roy Chapman Andrew's 1926 book "On the Trail of Ancient Man".
6. Next stop is in the country of Japan, in the prefecture of Hiroshima, in the Mt. Hiba area. This biped is said to be have dark fur and looks like a cross between a man and a gorilla. What's my sister's ex doing in Japan? It's probably not him. What is the name of this Japanese cryptid?

Answer: Hibagon

Hibagon is said to be a relative of Bigfoot, though not as tall. It was said to first appear in the 1970s, and retreated into the thickly forested region of Mt. Hiba in 1982. Some believe it might be another Japanese bipedal cryptid called the Kappa.

The people in the Mt Hiba area are proud to be associated with Hibagon. In fact, a statue of the creature stands alongside a road on the outskirts of Shobara City.

Gamera and Mothra are two of Godzilla's foes from those "funny" 1960s Japanese monster flicks. Gamera is a giant turtle and Mothra is, as you can probably guess, a giant moth.
7. Next it's on to Beijing. We catch a connecting flight to Shenyang for our trek to Lake Tianchi to try and glimpse a lake monster supposedly found there. There is a 20-minute video shot by a newsman showing six black Lake Tianchi monsters frolicking in the water. In which Asian country is the Lake Tianchi monster allegedly found?

Answer: China

Lake Tianchi is a popular tourist spot in China. About half the lake is actually found in North Korea, where it is known, English translation, as "Heaven Lake". It is the world's highest volcanic lake at 7,180 feet (2,189 m) above sea level.

The video was shot by Chinese newsman Zhou Yongsheng in 2007. You can actually see clips of it on the internet, if you dare!
8. Next stop is Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia. I've come to get a glimpse, if I can, of a famous (infamous?) sea monster known as Cadborosaurus Willsi. The locals in British Columbia call it by a nickname. What is this nickname?

Answer: Caddy

There have been many sightings of Caddy, from Washington state USA up to the Aleutian Islands near the Bering Strait. Many of the native populations have legends and artifacts that have to do with the legend of Caddy. It is said to have a head like a horse or camel and can reach up to 49 feet (15 m) in length.

Interestingly, the Oak Bay Tourism office, just a few kilometers east of provincial capitol Victoria, has advice on encounters with Caddy, including the advice to approach real slowly. As if that was needed, but then again, the advice is for people.

Nessie is the nickname for the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland. Champ is the name of the lake monster allegedly found in Lake Champlain, USA. Barney Fife was the
bumbling deputy sheriff, played wonderfully by Don Knotts, on the 1960s American TV show called the "Andy Griffith Show".
9. Next we fly to San Antonio, Texas, USA. We drive to a town a few hours southeast of San Antonio to get information about our next cryptid. In Cuero, Texas they have claimed to have even recovered a body of this fearsome creature. The vampire-like creature we're looking for is known as the "goat-sucker". It has been spotted in the southwestern USA, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. What is the name of this well-known cryptid?

Answer: Chupacabra

The name Chupacabra was coined by a Puerto Rican comedian, Silverio Perez, as a joke. It was in 1995, in Puerto Rico, that about a 1000 mysterious animal deaths that occurred there were blamed on the Chupacabra. The legend then spread to other parts of the western hemisphere. Some say it was a US secret experiment gone wrong. Others feel they're alien creatures. Some describe the Chupacabra as reptilian, and others describe it as canine-like. Either way, it is said to suck the blood of its victims.

Dracula is a vampire, but more legend than cryptid. The Yowie is a hairy bipedal cryptid found in Australia. As for any politician, well with blood sucking involved here, I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
10. Our final stop is in the US state of Louisiana. North of New Orleans across Lake Pontchartrain is a cryptid found in the wilds there. It is said to be half primate, half alligator by some of the locals. Others say it resembles the Skunk Ape, a supposed relative of Bigfoot. What is the common name of this creature?

Answer: Honey Island Swamp Monster

The creature is said to be about seven feet tall (2 m), have gray hair, and have a foul smell. What makes it different from most Bigfoot evidence found is that its feet are said to have four webbed-toes. Some say the origin of the creature was, after a circus train wrecked in the area in the early 20th-century, some escaped circus chimpanzees bred with the local alligator population. No, really, that is a theory. Isn't cryptozoology fun?

The Beasts of Bodmin Moor are unidentified panthers supposedly found in England. The Porterville Gnome in California is more a myth than a cryptid. Wally Gator was a 1960s-1970s cartoon character found on American TV. Wally Gator was a sophisticated talking 'gator that always wanted to be human'. Maybe he was the one that bred with the chimps?
