Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. JOY Adamson is well-known for her association with a lion cub named "Elsa". In what part of Africa did she find and raise Elsa?

Answer: Kenya

Joy Adamson's husband shot an aggressive lioness in a park in northern Kenya, only to discover that she was only protecting her cubs. They "adopted" the youngest cub Elsa and raised her to maturity later releasing her into the wild. The Adamsons later revisited Elsa and then her cubs in the wild. Elsa's story is told in the books "Born Free", "Living Free", and "Forever Free".
2. The Canadian actor Robert JOY had a recurring role on what American forensic crime series?

Answer: C.S.I. NY

Robert Joy played the role of Dr Sid Hammerbeck, the Chief Medical Examiner, on the show "C.S.I.: NY" for several years, first as a recurring role, and then as part of the main cast. His character became a millionaire when he developed and patented a pillow that 'cured' insomnia.

In 2015 Robert Joy and his daughter played the lead roles in Shakespeare's "Tempest" in Barrie, Ontario's Theatre by the Bay.
3. What popular music group had a great success in 1970 with "JOY to the World"?

Answer: Three Dog Night

This song, written by Hoyt Axton, was the release that brought fame and fortune to Three Dog Night in 1970. Its arresting opening words "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" and the catchy tune ensured its success.
4. The documentary-comedy-drama "JOY" (2015) starred what actress in the title role?

Answer: Jennifer Lawrence

"JOY" was a quasi-documentary on the life and career of Joy Mangano, who made a fortune developing and selling a self-wringing mop and other products. Jennifer Lawrence won a Golden Globe award for her performance and was also nominated for an Academy Award.
5. The hymn "Joy to the World" was not originally written as a Christmas song.

Answer: True

The words to the hymn are based on "Psalm 98" of the Old Testament and were first published in 1719. The hymn tune, "Antioch", is at least a century later, although some find hints of Handel's music in it. It was meant to celebrate the return of Christ at the end of the age and was not used as a Christmas tune until Percy Faith put out an instrumental version on a Christmas album in 1954.
6. "JOY in the Morning" is a comic novel by what author?

Answer: P.G. Wodehouse

"Joy in the Morning", published in 1946, is one of the novels in Wodehouse's famous comic series, "Jeeves and Wooster". As usual Bertie Wooster gets into trouble through a series of comic errors and mishaps from which only the unflappable Jeeves can rescue him.
7. "Surprised by JOY" was the title of whose autobiography?

Answer: C.S. Lewis

"Joy" was a fundamental concept in C.S. Lewis's life. Starting as a child, he would have these unworldly experiences of sheer longing for something beyond this world. He realised that there had to be a world beyond this world and this led him to return to Christianity.

In the early 1950s Lewis published these memories of his early life under the title, "Surprised by Joy". It is ironic that at the same time he was beginning a relationship with the woman who would become his wife. Her name was JOY Davidman.
8. "REJOICE in the Lord always" comes from what letter by the Apostle Paul?

Answer: Philippians

Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi can be summed up in one word, "rejoice". This letter was probably written ca. AD 60, while Paul was in Roman custody at Caesarea Maritima in Palestine. This passage is found in chapter 4 of the letter.
9. What baroque composer set "REJOICE in the Lord" to music?

Answer: Henry Purcell

Henry Purcell lived from 1659 to 1695 and was active both at Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal in London. His most famous works are the chamber operas "Dido and Aeneas", the "Indian Queen", "King Arthur" and many grand pieces for church and state occasions. "Rejoice in the Lord" is a splendid setting of "Philippians" 4.4-7.
10. Finally, a Canadian question that I couldn't resist. Helene JOY plays the role of the coroner in what Canadian police drama set in Victorian Toronto?

Answer: Murdoch Mysteries

The other three options are all set in the present: "Flashpoint" and "Rookie Blue" in Toronto, and "Motive" in Vancouver. "Murdoch Mysteries" is based on a series of detective stories by Maureen Jennings and begins in Toronto in the 1890s. The main female lead, Dr Julia Ogden, is played by Helene Joy, who is the police coroner and Murdoch's love interest.
