William I, was the ancestor of the House of Orange-Nassau, the royal family of the Netherlands. He took office at the end of the Eighty Years War against Spain, mainly a religious war between Protestant and Catholic backers. The House of Orange has played an important part in European history for hundreds of years and many royal families from other European nations are related to them in some manner. William I was married four times and fathered at least 16 children.

He was a practicing Lutheran, Catholic, and Calvinist at different points in his life.

Despite the fact that he was born in Germany and usually spoke French he is considered a national hero in the Netherlands.
