Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals. In ancient Egypt, these insects were known as scarabs, but by what other D name are they also known?

Answer: Dung Beetles

There are thousands of species of Dung Beetles. Dung Beetles use balls of animal dung that they roll for several purposes including feeding and building nests. Scarabaeus sacer is one of the species of Dung Beetle that the ancient Egyptians considered scarabs and assigned to them a sacred status.

The object in the picture is a brown circle that was meant to resemble a ball of dung.
2. Sci/Tech. Which of the following Ds, strictly speaking, is the name of an isotope and not an element?

Answer: Deuterium

Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen. While the most common form (well over 99%) of hydrogen is protium (a single proton in the nucleus orbited by a single electron), deuterium also has a neutron in the nucleus. The third, less stable form of hydrogen, tritium, has two neutrons in the nucleus. While many elements have more than one isotope, hydrogen is unusual in that it has specific names for its isotopes that are commonly used. The reason for this is that with the very low atomic weight of hydrogen, deuterium is significantly heavier than protium. The isotope of deuterium was first discovered in 1931.

Darnstadtium (Element 110) is a synthetic element that was first created in 1994. It is extremely radioactive and has a very short half-life. Dubnium (Element 105) is also a synthetic element that is radioactive. Scientists in the Soviet Union claimed to first create it in 1968. Scientists in the United States claimed to first create it in 1970. Dysprosium (Element 66) is a rare earth element that was first identified in 1886. It is silver-gray in color and relatively soft at room temperature.

The picture shows a drawing of the sun, which is composed largely of hydrogen (including small amounts of deuterium) and helium.
3. Music. Which "D" title song was a hit for the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in 1979?

Answer: Don't Bring Me Down

The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) was founded in Birmingham, England, in 1970 and has included Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, and many others in its line-up. During its most active period in the 1970s and 1980s, ELO sold over 50 million albums. In 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Don't Bring Me Down" appeared on the band's 1979 album "Discovery" and as a single charted in several countries including Australia (6), Canada (1), the United Kingdom (3), and United States (4).

"Daniel" was a hit for Elton John in 1973. "Devil with a Blue Dress On" was a hit for Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels in 1966. "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" was a hit for Manfred Mann in 1964.

The object in the picture is an arrow pointing down surrounded by the symbol for "no" or "don't".
4. Movies. Don't look twice, but which D movie role led its portrayer to an Academy Award win for Best Actor?

Answer: Dr. Jekyll

Frederic March (1897-1975) won the 1932 Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying the title roles in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1931). He also won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in "The Best Years of our Lives" (1947). Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde first appeared in the 1886 novella, "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson. In the novella and the movie, Dr. Jekyll created a formula that would allow him to transform into Mr. Hyde (the evil side of his personality). In 1932, Frederic March actually tied in the voting for Best Actor with Wallace Beery in "The Champ" (1932)--the first time this happened in the voting for Best Actor.

The object in the picture is a beaker filled with the formula Dr. Jekyll would take to transform into Mr. Hyde.
5. Religion. Which D ruled Israel, was the child of Jesse and the enemy of Saul--even though he once spared his life?

Answer: David

David lived about 1000 BCE in what is know called Israel. In the Bible, his story is predominantly told in the First and Second Books of Samuel and the First Book of Kings with some mention in the First and Second Books of Chronicles. He first came to notice defeating the giant Goliath in single combat. Despite Saul, the first King of Israel, coming to hate David, Saul's son Jonathan becomes one of David's best friends. On one occasion David finds Saul asleep but does not harm him, saying it would be wrong to injure one who had been chosen by God. David ruled as king for 40 years and was succeeded by his son Solomon. David was the son of Jesse and the great-grandson of Ruth.

Lasorda has 1,599 wins as a manager and led the team to World Series Championships in 1981 and 1988. His number (2) was retired by the Dodgers in 1997, the same year he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The object in the picture is supposed to be a strip of movie film which I hoped would get you to think of Hollywood and by extension Los Angeles.
7. Brain Teasers. Complete this analogy that is related to Greek and Roman Mythology with the name of a "D" god or goddess Jupiter is to Ceres as Zeus is to ______

Dionysus is the god of wine and revelry. Dysnomia is the goddess of lawlessness. Answer: Dragnet

"Dragnet" was created by Jack Webb (1920-1982) who played the role of Sgt. Joe Friday of the Los Angeles Police Department for many years in the radio show (1949-1957), and two television shows (1951-1959) and (1967-1970). Ben Alexander played Frank Smith on the 1950s television show and Harry Morgan portrayed Bill Gannon on the later television show. The two television series used Joe Friday's badge with the number 714 as part of the opening credits. When Jack Webb died, the Los Angeles Police Department officially retired the 714 badge.

Of the other programs, "Division 4" comes from Australia, "Dalgliesh" comes from the United Kingdom, and "Derrick" comes from Germany.

The object in the picture represents Joe Friday's badge, with the 714.

Djibouti (in East Africa), Dominica (in the Caribbean), and the Dominican Republic (also in the Caribbean) have warmer climates than Denmark.

The object in the picture is the flag of Denmark with its red background and white cross. This flag has been associated with Denmark since the 14th century.
