Question 1 of 10
1. At the Virginia Renaissance Faire, I saw a juggling act called London Broil. During their show, they juggled several items. What type of item did they not juggle? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. While visiting the Colorado Renaissance Faire, I saw the famous comedy act of Puke and Snot. Some of their skits are repeated if they prove popular. One of their humorous stories involves a pirate captain. To paraphrase, "The lookout said, 'One ship on the horizon, Captain.' 'Bring me my red shirt,' said the Captain. 'If I am injured in battle, it will not show and my men will continue to fight fiercely.' Later the lookout said, 'Ten ships on the horizon, Captain.' This time the Captain said, 'Bring me my _____ pants.'"

What color were the Captain's pants in this classic story/joke?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. I have viewed and heard the singing trio of the O'Danny Girls several times at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. They sing songs that use classic tunes--often with new and clever lyrics. One of their songs is "Daphne's Diversion", set to the tune of "The Irish Rover". In that song, which references many science fiction and fantasy tales, there is a throwaway reference to "Jelly Babies" in connection with a science fiction story. Which science fiction show featured a time-traveling character who in one of his versions liked Jelly Babies? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. While at the Virginia Renaissance Faire, I heard Fletcher Moone sing a song praising beer and discussing the various sized vessels for holding beer. The starting point was the Imperial Pint (20 ounces) that was the size of a mug of beer for men in the time of the Renaissance. It was considered undignified, however, for women to drink from a pint mug and instead they used a smaller mug called a Gill Pot. How many ounces did a Gill Pot hold? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. While at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Festival, I notice that there is a stage that is set up to play a human-sized version of a classic game. Every year there are two characters who get into an argument that will be settled by playing a game which is never played to its conclusion. This allows them to finally settle the argument during a joust. What "human-sized" game is often played at Renaissance Faires? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The highlight of many a Renaissance Faire is the joust. Two knights on horseback charging at each other while aiming their weapons. What weapon will we probably see with two medieval knights on horseback? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. While at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, I always make the time to stop by the Historic Glass Works to see a glassblowing show. It amazes me that the craftsman can turn a lump of sand and a few other ingredients into a beautiful and functional object. The Glass Works has three shows each day where they focus on glass-making in different time periods. Which show comes first in the day and represents the earliest time period? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. A visit to the Renaissance Faire would not be complete without seeing the ruling king or queen. Which Tudor monarch is usually seen when a king presides over a Renaissance Faire? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Sometimes at the Renaissance Faire you can see a Shakespearean play--either a full play or an abridged version. Shakespeare's plays are divided into tragedies, comedies, and histories. Which play is not considered a comedy? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. For many people, a visit to the Renaissance Faire will include a glass of mead. Mead is an alcoholic beverage that reminds some people of a very sweet wine. Wine is made from fermented grapes. What substance is fermented to make mead? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the Virginia Renaissance Faire, I saw a juggling act called London Broil. During their show, they juggled several items. What type of item did they not juggle?

Answer: Wine Bottles

Matt, AJ, and Louie (the members of London Broil) joked that the machetes they used were very cheaply made. Balls and clubs are common props of jugglers. I think that wine bottles would become an expensive prop to juggle since any bottle dropped in practice could easily break and need to be replaced.
'If I am injured in battle, it will not show and my men will continue to fight fiercely.' Later the lookout said, 'Ten ships on the horizon, Captain.' This time the Captain said, 'Bring me my _____ pants.'" What color were the Captain's pants in this classic story/joke?

Answer: Brown

The Captain's pants were brown. He was scared by the sight of so many ships and did not want his men to see that he had soiled himself. Puke and Snot have appeared at Renaissance Faires nationwide for over forty years.

Answer: Doctor Who

The fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker, was known for carrying a bag of Jelly Babies, which he often offered to friend and foe alike. Having tried them a few times, it seems to me that they are more expensive than your typical jelly bean, but better than your typical jelly bean also. "Daphne's Diversion" is a very humorous song which references literally dozens of sci-fi and fantasy shows and movies.

Answer: 10 ounces

While it was undignified for a woman to drink a whole pint of beer, she could consume several Gill Pots with no negative repercussions. The five ounce mug was referred to as a "Jack Pot" and was actually meant for children's servings. This is not as bad as it sounds. Not knowing about microbes, pre-modern people did notice that drinking raw untreated water could make you sick.

Answer: Chess

Human Chess games have occurred for hundreds of years. Often at the Faire, the pieces will be a combination of performers at the Faire and volunteers from the audience. Human Chess can sometimes include fairly impressive stage combat.
6. The highlight of many a Renaissance Faire is the joust. Two knights on horseback charging at each other while aiming their weapons. What weapon will we probably see with two medieval knights on horseback?

Answer: Lance

The descendants of the knights a few hundred years later may have used a pistol for a duel. The knights would probably have disdained using a quarterstaff--that was more of a common man's weapon, albeit often effective. Unless you threw the dagger, you would have to be extremely close to another knight to use a dagger on him.

Answer: Roman

The Romans viewed glassware the same way that we viewed plastics--as something that was inexpensive and could be disposable. The three shows are, in chronological order, Roman, Medieval, and Renaissance. The Glassworks finishes the day with an "Anything Goes" show that could in theory include glass-making techniques from Victorian times.
8. A visit to the Renaissance Faire would not be complete without seeing the ruling king or queen. Which Tudor monarch is usually seen when a king presides over a Renaissance Faire?

Answer: Henry VIII

Henry VIII (1509-1547) is known as the king with six wives. The other monarchs listed were not part of the Tudor dynasty. Edward IV (1461-1483) was Henry's grandfather on his mother's side and part of the House of York. James I (1603-1625) was the great-grandson of Henry's sister and a member of the House of Stuart. Charles V (1519-1556) was not an English king, but instead the Holy Roman Emperor.

His son, Philip II, however, did marry Henry's daughter, Queen Mary I.
9. Sometimes at the Renaissance Faire you can see a Shakespearean play--either a full play or an abridged version. Shakespeare's plays are divided into tragedies, comedies, and histories. Which play is not considered a comedy?

Answer: Henry V

I have seen abridged versions of all of these plays performed at Renaissance Faires. "Henry V" would be considered a historical play. Some groups will include parodies or humorous interpretations of histories or even tragedies. They are quite a bit funnier if you have some familiarity with the original.
10. For many people, a visit to the Renaissance Faire will include a glass of mead. Mead is an alcoholic beverage that reminds some people of a very sweet wine. Wine is made from fermented grapes. What substance is fermented to make mead?

Answer: Honey

While some meads do add flavoring such as strawberries, basic mead is made from fermented honey. It was developed in northern countries where they were unable to grow grapes for wine.
