Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year was the Commonwealth of Australia formed, when the colonies became a nation?

Answer: 1901

Federation, and the Australian Constitution, came into effect on January 1, 1901. The constitution can only be changed by a referendum, and for a referendum to be passed, it must be agreed by a majority of voters, and by a majority of states. Of the 42 proposals put to referendum since during the 20th century, only 8 were passed.
2. How many years is the maximum allowable term for an Australian Prime Minister?

Answer: there is none

The longest-serving Prime Minster to date is Sir Robert Menzies, who served as PM for 18 years 5 months 12 days. The maximum time allowed between elections is three years, but there is no limit to how many times a person may be elected or sit as Prime Minister.

The PM is chosen by the 150 members of the House of Representatives, and is usually the leader of the party or coalition that has the most seats. Australia also has a second house called the Senate with 76 senators. The territorial senators may stand for re-election every three years, the state senators stand for re-election every six years (ie. half the senate are replaced every three years).
3. In January 2003 the Australian postage rate for a standard domestic letter was increased. How many cents was the new cost of a stamp ?

Answer: 50

Standard postage stamps were 50 cents. The rate was increased in January 2003 after 11 years at 45c. Australia Post claims that, at 50 cents, our postage rates are amongst the lowest in the developed world.
4. One of Australia's greatest sportsmen ever (and indeed one of the greatest batsmen cricket has ever seen) was Sir Donald Bradman. What was his batting average over his 20-year Test cricketing career?

Answer: 99.94

The great "The Don" (27/8/1908- 25/2/2001) narrowly missed making his Test average a century, though he made plenty of centuries (100 or more runs in an innings) in his career. He was one of the greatest batsmen of all time. The postal address of the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) is GPO Box 9994 in every capital city in Australia.
Sir Don's highest international score of 334 not out stood unequalled for many years, but was finally recently equalled by Mark Taylor.
5. Australia won 2 gold medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics, bringing Australia's total of Winter Olympics gold medals (1924 to 2002) to how many?

Answer: 2

Australia's first two Winter Olympics golds were won at the 2002 games at Salt Lake City. Alisa Camplin won the womens' aerial skiing and Steven Bradbury won the mens 1000m speed skating in a memorable race where many of the competitors fell. While being a very competitive nation in summer sports, Australia has few opportunities for competitors in winter sports and those competing at international level often spend large amounts of money and time away overseas in the pursuit of competition (and even in pursuit of snow, as our ski season is barely three months duration).
6. How many players are there on the field (counting both teams) in a game of Australian Rules?

Answer: 36

There are 18 players for each team on the field at a time. Australian Rules (or Aussie Rules) is a fast-moving and exciting contact football where the ball is allowed to be kicked or passed by hand in a special pass called a handball.
A goal is scored if the ball is kicked between the two middle (tallest)goalposts. A goal is worth 6 points. A point (1 point) is scored when the ball passes between one of the goalposts and one of the shorter outer posts called point posts.
7. Netball has one of the highest numbers of participants of any sport in Australia. How many points do you get in netball for a goal?

Answer: 1

A netball team consists of seven players on the court (plus substitutes). Each player wears a "bib" with his or her position on it, and this position determines the areas on the court that they may occupy and their tasks on the team. For example, only goal shooter and goal attack may enter their goal circle and thus shoot goals, but goal attack in particular also plays an important part in feeding the ball to the goal circle. Netball was originally a code of women's basketball but is now played (in particular the indoor netted variety) by men on mixed teams as well.

It is a great team sport where the contribution of every team member is important.
8. What date in January is Australia Day?

Answer: 26th

Australia Day is celebrated on the 26th January as this is the date that the first fleet of settlers arrived in Australia. With the renewed realisation that this date is not necessarily a date of celebration for some of our indigenous citizens, some people are pushing for a date change, however I think the date will remain as Australians see it now as a time to celebrate our pride in our wonderful country.
9. Country music legend Slim Dusty died on 19th September 2003. How old was he when he died?

Answer: 76

Born David Gordon Kirkpatrick, he had adopted the name Slim Dusty by the age of 11 and had already started the country music career that would span the rest of his life. Slim Dusty became the icon of Australian country music and his most famous recordings included "The Pub With No Beer" (Australia's first ever gold record), "Waltzing Matilda" and "I Love to Have a Beer With Duncan".
10. Australia's highest peak is Mount Kosciuszko. How high is it?

Answer: 2227m

The diminutive Mt Kosciuszko was named by Polish-born Count Paul Edmund de Strzelecki in February 1840, when he climbed the mountain accompanied by local grazier, James MacArthur. Strzelecki named the mountain after a Polish patriot, Kosciuszko.
Mt Kosciuszko is in the Snowy Mountains near the New South Wales/ Victoria border, about three hours drive from Canberra. It is covered in snow in winter but in summer it is a nice walk to the summit (when I was a child you could drive to the top).
