Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I watched a movie featuring one of my favorite actors last night, and that made me think of a movie in which he brilliantly played the character of Raymond Babbit. Do you know who I mean?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman played Raymond Babbit in 1988's "Rain Man", the story of a self-absorbed car dealer, Charlie Babbit (Tom Cruise), who found out he had an autistic savant brother in Ohio. He decided to bring him back to California by car and both found that they loved each other. Hoffman received the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance.
2. We went out for a steak dinner last week and that made me think of how meat is graded. What is the highest grade of U.S. beef as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture?

Answer: Prime

USDA grade Prime is the highest grade of U.S. beef. Several factors determine the grade, among them, firmness, texture, color of lean meat, maturity and degree of marbling (intramuscular fat). It is marbling that ultimately determines whether a cut of beef will be graded Prime or a lower grade.
3. The theme song from the movie "Titanic" is a frequent question at FunTrivia and that made me think of the book "Raise the Titanic!". Who wrote it?

Answer: Clive Cussler

"Raise the Titanic!" was written in 1976 by Clive Cussler. It was a fictional account of an effort to raise the Titanic because it carried a cargo of an exotic mineral. It was made into a movie in 1980 and did poorly at the box office.
4. I saw an advertisement for a Citizen's Band radio the other day, and that made me think of a singer who helped popularize it in the 1970s. You may have seen him in a "Convoy" or driving over "Wolf Creek Pass". Which singer wanted to take a ride on "Black Bear Road"?

Answer: C.W. McCall

William Fries, Jr., also known as C.W. McCall, was an advertising agency executive who created a successful series of television advertisements featuring a truck driver named C.W. McCall. He turned that into the character of the truck driver in the song "Convoy". He followed that up with several songs about driving Jeep trails in Colorado including "Black Bear Road".
5. I was watching a cat prowling around my back yard this morning, and that made me think of an Egyptian goddess who was the protector of the royal house and whose symbol was the cat. Do you know her name?

Answer: Bastet

Bastet was originally seen as the protectress goddess of the royal household. Later, some of her glory was taken by Sekmet, who was the lion-headed goddess. Bastet became the protectress of cats, which were highly respected by the Egyptians. Bastet apparently knew how to have a good time because on her feast day there was a lot of dancing and drinking going on!
6. I was watching a country's leader spouting invectives on TV and that made me think that in the twentieth-century, a dictator in another part of the world decided he was the rightful heir to the title of "King of Scotland". Who was he?

Answer: Idi Amin Dada

Idi Amin Dada was the third president and military dictator of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He joined the British Colonial Army in Uganda in 1946. When Uganda became independent of the United Kingdom in 1962 Amin found himself in the Ugandan army, eventually rising to the rank of Deputy Commander. He seized power in a military coup in 1971. Among his pronouncements over the years was that he loved the Scottish people and wanted to liberate them from the U.K., thereby making himself their king.
7. A team quiz was about religion, with the King James version of the Protestant Bible used as a source of questions. That made me think about how I grew up with a different Bible. Which Bible was the one most used by Roman Catholics from the 1700s until well into the twentieth century?

Answer: Douay-Rheims

The Douay-Rheims Bible was "the" Catholic Bible for over 200 years. The English College in Douai, France, translated the Old Testament in 1612. The New Testament portion was published in Reims, France, in 1582. Richard Challoner, a Catholic bishop from England is credited with revising and reconciling the Douay-Rheims Bible into what we recognize today.
8. I was cleaning the brick-facing on my house this past weekend and that made me think that the Indianapolis (Indiana) Motor Speedway is known as "The Brickyard" because its racing surface was originally made of bricks. How much brick is on the modern track?

Answer: a single yard-long strip

Advancements in racing and tire technologies made the original brick surface unsafe, so over the years the bricks were replaced with asphalt. By 1961, only a one-yard long strip of bricks the width of the track at the start/finish line was all that was left.
9. A question about the American Civil War came up recently on FunTrivia, and that made me think about the Confederate army officer who was credited with giving General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson his nickname. Who was it?

Answer: General Barnard Bee, Jr.

General Barnard Bee, Jr. is given credit for Jackson's nickname of "Stonewall". In the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas, Virginia), on July 12, 1861, Bee watched as Jackson's brigade held firm before a Union army advance and supposedly yelled to his own troops: "There stands Jackson like a stone wall! Rally behind the Virginians!" Another opinion is that Bee was angry at Jackson for coming late to the battle and said something similar to, "There stands Jackson like a damn stone wall!" The real intent will never be known, as Bee was killed shortly thereafter.

In any case, the nickname stuck.
10. I noticed how realistic the characters look in a new video game, and that made me think of a "Lord of the Rings" video game in which the characters look somewhat different from those in the movies. What do the characters look like?

Answer: Legos

A Legos version of "Lord of the Rings" was available for the Wii, XBox 360, PlayStation and others. Legos have also been used for Star Wars and Batman video games.
