Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you're sick with something, just chop up some of your hair, put it between 2 pieces of bread and butter, and give it to a dog. This will transfer the illness from you to the poor dog.

Answer: True

A strange dog coming into your house was thought to herald the formation of a new friendship, maybe with the person whose hair he just ate!
2. If you saw someone holding a live frog with its head in their mouth, what oral difficulty might they be having trouble with? (Since this complaint is most common in babies, you'd have to find some pretty small frogs!)

Answer: Thrush

It was believed that the frog breathed in the thrush, and took it away. Rubbing a frog on a wart was also supposed to get rid of the wart. I wonder what would happen if you used the same frog for both complaints...would your wart get thrush?
3. The calluses that grow on the side of a horse's legs were once believed to be a cure for cancer.

Answer: True

You had to dry these out, and grind them up finely into powder. If you drank this a few times a day with milk, then your cancer should disappear. If your kids have worms, just chop up some horse hairs and serve them to your kids in bread and butter.
4. What must you roast up and feed to your husband if you want him to be obedient? Perhaps it has something to do with the transference of wisdom.

Answer: Owl

Owls can also be unlucky, and if you hear one hoot then you must be sure to remove all your clothing, and put it back on inside out.
5. Everyone knows that a sure-fired way to get rid of a wart is to rub an apple on it and then feed the apple to a pig. But should the apple be peeled or unpeeled?

Answer: Peeled

And if you ever end up going out to sea to fish, remember that it's extremely unlucky to say the word 'pig' while you're out there.
6. What disease can you draw out by applying a sheep's LUNG to the soles of your feet?

Answer: Pneumonia

If you suffer from rheumatism, remember to carry a sheep's knucklebone around in your pocket. This will help with the pain.
7. People used to put stone cats on the walls of their houses to keep the plague out of their homes. What did they wear around their necks in a walnut shell to repel the plague, if they had to go out?

Answer: Spider

Keep your eyes on your walls, because if you see a spider run down one, it means that you're going on a trip.
8. If you want to ensure faithfulness in your husband, just sew a swan's feather into his pillow.

Answer: True

Since swans are thought to hold the souls of people who have passed on, it's considered very bad luck to kill a swan, but apparently it's okay to pluck one!
9. If your throat is all swollen with an infection, should you wear a wolf's left paw around your neck to help reduce the swelling?

Answer: No

It has to be the right paw for some reason. There are many other superstitions surrounding wolves. Ingesting powdered wolf's liver was believed to help ease the pain of childbirth. It was believed that you could cook meat with a wolf's breath, but be careful not to look at it while your meat is cooking, because meeting the gaze of a wolf can result in blindness.
10. This one is my personal favourite. If you eat a live toad as soon as you get up in the morning, will that be the worst thing that happens to you all day?

Answer: Yes

This is one of those self-evident truths! However, this does seem at odds with the superstition that killing a toad brings storms. I can't imagine that many toads would survive the experience of being eaten.
