Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Biology: Which of the following could be considered the first phase of mitosis?

Answer: Prophase

In cellular division, a cell splits and creates another version of itself. However, in all multicellular organisms (mostly animals) the cells stop dividing after the telomeres, a DNA that protects the chromosomes, wear out and can no longer protect the chromosome.

In humans, this usually occurs after fifty-two divisions. Cancer cells, however, has a special enzyme that renews the telomeres and allows the cells to divide forever.
2. Algebra II: Use synthetic division to find the remainder of : (x^4 + 3x^3 + 4x^2 - x + 6) divided by (x - 3)

Answer: 201

Synthetic division is a method to divide a polynomial (x^4 + 3x^3 + 4x^2 - x + 6) by a binomial (x - 3). In synthetic division, the number at the end has its sign flipped (from -3 to 3). Then, you take all of the coefficients (the number in front of the 'x's) and the final number and put them next to each other.

Then, you multiply the first coefficient (which is one) by number in the binomial (which is three.) You get three. Then, you add that to the second coefficient, which gives you six, then multiply that sum by the number in the binomial (which is three). And that gives you 18.

Then you add 18 to the third coefficient, four, and get 22. Then multiply that by three and you get 66. Then add the fourth coefficient (-1) to 66 and you get 65. Multiply that by three and you get 195.

Then add the final number, six, to that and you get 201.
3. Health: Which of these is known as "the powerhouse of the cell"?

Answer: mitochondria

The mitochondria help the cell generate energy.
4. Computer Applications: In Microsoft Excel what are the things called that you enter your data into?

Answer: Cells

They are cells. Cells in Excel are adjustable, so you can change their size, color, border, and more. There are over 16 million cells in a single Excel sheet that can be used. Excel is available on both a Windows computer and Mac. There have been many versions of Excel released for Windows and the Mac both.
5. Civics: "Consent of the governed" is an idea in which a government is lawful when which group gives consent?

Answer: The citizens

Consent of the governed gives power to the people through the right to vote. John Locke, an early English philosopher, influenced this idea. John Locke also started the idea of people having certain unalienable rights. These rights were originally life, liberty, and property. Now, however, many people include the pursuit of happiness.
6. Literature: Which literary element is used in the following sentence: "Peter prepares some pretty good pizza."

Answer: Alliteration

Alliteration is the repetition of a beginning consonant sound in two or more words in a line. This is typically used in poetry. When two or more words with the same beginning vowel sound, it is called repetition. Alliteration is usually found in poems, and are often called tongue twisters. A famous example of alliteration would be "Sally sells seashells by the seashore."
7. Geometry: a=b, b=c, so a=c. Which property of equality does this demonstrate?

Answer: Transitive property of equality

What transitive property states is that one unknown is equal to a second, and the second is equal to a third, so the first must also be equal to the third. Two other properties like this are symmetric property, in which it states that one unknown is equal to a second, so the second is therefore equal to the first. (a=b, so b=a).

Another is reflexive property in which an unknown is always equal to itself. (a=a)
8. Spanish: Which of the following countries does not have Spanish as their official languages?

Answer: Brazil

Aren't you lucky I didn't actually make you try to translate Spanish? Anyway, Brazil's official language isn't Spanish, it's Portuguese. Other Spanish speaking countries include Argentina, Bolivia, El Salvador, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, Spain, Panama, Cost Rica, and many more. Although most South American countries speak Spanish, there are four that do not.
9. Chemistry: A water molecule is not polar.

Answer: False

Water is polar. Water is polar because water is made up of two different types of atoms, two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. When hydrogen and oxygen bond, it is a bond that shares an electron. Since oxygen atoms are so much bigger than hydrogen atoms, the electrons spend more time orbiting the oxygen atom than the hydrogen atom, which gives oxygen a slightly negative charge, and the hydrogen a slightly positive charge.

This is what makes water polar.
10. Geometry: What is the sum of the exterior angles of a regular dodecagon?

Answer: 360 degrees

The sum of any polygon's exterior angles is always 360 degrees. To find an exterior angle, simply subtract the internal angle (the angle on the inside of the polygon) from 180. To find the measure of a single internal angle of a polygon, use the formula (n-2)*180/n.

In the formula, n equals the number of sides on the polygon. To find the sum of all of the internal angles, use the formula (n-2)*180 where n is equal to the number of sides.
11. Literature: Which of the following is a reflexive pronoun?

Answer: Himself

A reflexive pronoun is any sort of pronoun that refers to itself. Examples of reflexive pronouns are himself, herself, itself, and themselves. There are five other types of pronouns. They are personal, relative, indefinite, demonstrative, and interrogative. Personal pronouns replace people, places or things.

A few examples would be: I, me, he, you, or she. Relative pronouns are pronouns that refer back to another noun that was used in the sentence. A few examples would be: who or that. Indefinite pronouns are pronouns that refer to an unknown person, place, thing, or group of people.

A few examples would be: anybody, few, or several. Demonstrative pronouns are pronouns that identify objects within a noun, such as "these pants" or "those cups." Interrogative pronouns are pronouns that ask questions. Examples would be: Who, what, when where, why, or how.
12. Computer Applications: Which of the following is NOT one of the home row keys?

Answer: B

The home row keys are the keys that your fingers rest on as they are typing. The home row keys are A, S, D, F, J, K, L, and ;. Also, there are also little marks on the J and F keys, which your index fingers rest on, so that you can tell if your fingers are on the right keys without having to looking down at the keyboard.
13. Civics: Which of the following countries is NOT one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council?

Answer: Germany

The five permanent countries in the United Nations Security Council are Russia, United States, France, Great Britain, and China. These were originally chosen from the victors of World War II. Also, all five permanent members have a veto power that will overrule any majority vote, no matter what. All five permanent members have also signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty.
14. Algebra II: What is the slope of the line that contains the points (3,3) and (6,7)?

Answer: 4/3

To find the slope of a line, you take the two Y's (the second number in the parentheses) and subtract the first one from the second one. (You could do this in reverse and subtract the second one from the first one, but only if you do the same for the 'x's.) Then you take the two 'x's (the first number in the parentheses) and subtract the first one from the second one. (or vice versa if you switch the Y's.) Put the rise over the run (The Y over the X, because in a graph, the Y-axis goes vertically and the X-axis goes horizontally) and that is the slope of the line.
15. Literature: In Romeo and Juliet, who gives Juliet the poison that makes her appear dead?

Answer: Friar Lawrence

After Romeo is exiled, Juliet threatens to kill herself in front of Friar Lawrence if he cannot find a way to fix it. So he gives her a poison that makes her appear dead, and he would find somebody to get Romeo and tell him to come back to Verona to get Juliet.

However, his plan goes south and Romeo, thinking that she's dead, kills himself, and Juliet kills herself after seeing Romeo dead.
16. Geometry: 4/3 * pi * radius^3 is the formula for what?

Answer: Volume of a sphere

The volume of a sphere is correct. The formula for the surface area of a sphere is (4 * pi * radius^2). The area of a circle is pi * radius^2. When volume is measured, it is measured in cubic units. Volume is the amount of space inside of the object. So, if you were to fill up a sphere with water, you would use that formula to find out just how many cubic units of water would fit into the sphere.
17. Spanish: The verb "Estar" means "to be." In the form that estar is in, which type of verb is it?

Answer: Infinitive

It is an infinitive verb. When anything that is in the form with an "ar" ending, it is infinitive and not simplified any further. The hint was given to you through the English translation. In the English language as well, if the verb begins with "to", it is an infinitive.

This is the most simplified form of a verb. However, in Spanish, a conjugated verb is a verb that is changed to fit how it is used in the sentence. The nouns are changed based on which subject is doing the verb.
18. Computer Applications: Which of these words, when typed in the formal manner, can be typed using only the left hand?

Answer: Freezers

In the word Jugglers, J, U, and L are typed with the right hand. In Lipstick, L, I, P, and K are typed with the right hand. And in Fearless, all of them are typed with the left hand except for the L. Letters that can be typed with the left hand are: Q, W, E, R, T, A, S ,D, F, G, Z, X, C, V, and B.

The longest words (there are actually three that are the same length) that can be typed using only the left hand are: aftercataracts, tesseradecades, and tetrastearates.
19. Biology: Brown hair is dominant of blond hair.

Answer: Yes

Genetics was first studied by Gregor Mendel, a monk. When genes are passed on, the only way for somebody to get a recessive gene is to get the recessive gene from both parents, because a dominant gene always covers the recessive. There is, however, co-dominance in which both are dominant and you get a mixture. (Example, co-dominance in red and white flower color gives you pink.)
20. Literature: In the Odyssey, which goddess, born from Zeus' forehead, helps Odysseus through his journeys?

Answer: Athena

In Greek Mythology, Athena was born from Zeus' forehead. She is said to be the first daughter of Zeus. She is also one of the twelve major gods in Greek Mythology. She was also said to have always been a virgin, turned Medusa into a the gorgon with snakes for hair, and gave Tiresias the gift of prophecy.
