Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the natural habitat of the Grizzly Bear?

Answer: North America

The Grizzly Bear is a sub-species of the Brown Bear that lives mostly in northwestern North America. Male Grizzly Bears often grow large enough to stand as tall as 8 feet on their hind legs.
2. In which type of bear is the average male more than twice the size of the female -- the largest difference of almost any mammal?

Answer: Polar Bear

The Polar bear is the world's largest land-based meat-eating animal. Compared with the largest of the 'big cats', the Siberian Tiger, the Polar Bear is more than twice the size. Larger male Polar Bears weigh as much as 1,500 pounds -- about the same as a Mini Cooper.
3. What type of food does the Giant Panda eat?

Answer: Bamboo

The Giant Panda lives mostly on bamboo, although it will occasionally eat fish, honey and bananas too. Unfortunately, there is little nutritional value in bamboo so the Panda must eat 20-30 pounds a day, which means that it virtually spends its whole life eating.
4. Which famous literary bear comes from 'Darkest Peru'?

Answer: Paddington

Created by writer Michael Bond, Paddington first appeared in the book 'A Bear Called Paddington', published in 1958. He arrives in London and is found on Paddington Station by the Brown family -- Mr & Mrs Brown and their children, Jonathan and Judy.
5. After which American President was the Teddy Bear named?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

When on a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902, President Roosevelt ordered the mercy killing of a wounded Black Bear. A toy maker subsequently asked to be allowed to use the President's name on a toy bear, and the first 'Teddy Bear' was 'born'.
6. Which of the following animals is part of the 'Bear' family?

Answer: Sloth Bear

Sloth Bears are native to the Indian sub-continent. They live primarily in trees and eat mostly termites. Although the Koala is often called a bear, it is most closely related to other marsupials such as possums, wombats and kangaroos. There is no 'Moon Bear', although there is a 'Sun Bear'. There are Brown Bears and Black Bears but no Red Bears.
7. What does 'Smokey Bear' campaign aim to prevent?

Answer: Forest Fires

'Smokey' is the mascot of the U.S. Forest Service. He is used to educate people about the dangers of forest fires. The advertising campaign 'Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires' began in 1944.
8. Which American state has a bear on its flag?

Answer: California

Louisiana, New Mexico and West Virginia all have the Black Bear as their 'state animal', whilst the Grizzly Bear has the same status in Montana and California. Of these states, only California features the bear on its flag, though.
9. Which of the following is a real member of the bear family?

Answer: The Spectacled Bear

Yes, there really is a 'Spectacled Bear'. They are native to the Andes Mountains in South America and are named because of the light patches around their eyes that make it appear as if they are wearing eye-glasses.
10. A bear cub named 'Misha' was the official mascot for which Olympic Games?

Answer: Moscow 1980

The Russian Bear is the national personification of 'Mother Russia'. The bear is also a national symbol in Germany. Finland has the Brown Bear as its national animal.
