Answer: James Callaghan

Callaghan took over as Labour leader from Harold Wilson in 1976. In the general election of 1979, he was resoundingly defeated by the Tories led by Margaret Thatcher.
2. What is the British flag popularly known as?

Answer: Union Jack

When James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603, the English (cross of St George) and Scottish (cross of St Andrew) flags merged into the Union Jack. In 1801 after the Act of Union with Ireland, also was added the cross of St Patrick to the flag which we know today. Technically the British flag is known as the 'Union Flag' and only becomes the 'Union Jack' when it appears on the 'jackstaff' or 'jackpole' of a ship.
3. Which is the most easterly town on the UK mainland?

Answer: Lowestoft

Generally known as a fishing town, Lowestoft is in the county of Suffolk, East Anglia.
4. Which of these famous film stars was NOT born in the UK?

Answer: Oliver Hardy

Oliver Hardy's parents were British but he was born in Georgia, USA in 1892. Both Bob Hope and Kiefer Sutherland were born in London (1903 and 1966 respectively). Cary Grant was born in Bristol in 1904.
5. In which year did the BBC make their first broadcast?

Answer: 1922

The British Broadcasting Corporation first aired in 1922 with their two radio stations 'Home Programme' and 'Light Programme'. In 1936 they began the world's first television broadcast from the Alexandra Palace in North London.
6. Which British band were the first to reach No.1 in the US music charts with the instrumental 'Telstar'?

Answer: The Tornados

Produced by the legendary Joe Meek, this instrumental became the first British band to hit No.1 Stateside in 1962. Formerly the backing band of rock'n'roll singer Billy Fury, 'Telstar' was their only No.1 hit in the US and in the UK.
7. Nearly all film-buffs can tell you that 'The Jazz Singer' (1927) was the first 'talkie'. Britain's first 'talkie' was released in 1929. What was the name of the film?

Answer: Blackmail

Alfred Hitchcock directed this early effort. Not surprisingly, 'Blackmail' has dated quite badly, but still has some effective moments. Hitchcock re-located to America ten years later and went on to much greater things.

Answer: Cecil Rhodes

Empire-builder Cecil Rhodes made his first million by the time he was 25 years old, earning his fortune from the diamond mines of South Africa. He became a pivotal figure in South Africa during the last years of the nineteenth century, and also had a great line in quotes!

Answer: Hungary

Hungary's 'wingless-wonders' handed out a 6-3 drubbing to England at Wembley stadium. In a return match the following year in Budapest, the Hungarians ran out 7-1 winners, a massive drubbing which England will not forget for many years to come.

Answer: William IV
