Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1974 movie was the first film jointly produced by two major Hollywood studios, and won an Oscar nomination for "Best Supporting Actor" for Fred Astaire?

Answer: The Towering Inferno

20th Century Fox and Warner Bros both planned on making a disaster movie set in a tall building and bought the rights to "The Glass Inferno" and "The Tower" respectively. Irwin Allen, who had produced "The Poseidon Adventure" for Fox two years earlie convinced studio executives that the two movies would cancel each other out and brought about this collaboration.

As well as Astaire, the movie's all star cast included Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway Robert Wagner and O.J. Simpson.
2. What was the name of the North Sea oil and gas platform that exploded in 1988, the resulting fires killing 167 people?

Answer: Piper Alpha

On the night of July 6, gas leaked from a faulty condensate valve and ignited before anyone had time to react. The fire blocked the route to the emergency lifeboats and the smoke prevented helicopter landings. Three gas lines then ruptured, and ignited sending flames over 90 metres in the air and engulfing the platform. Of the 226 people on board, only 61 survived and two more people from a rescue vessel were also killed.

It took three weeks to put the fire out and 60 bodies have never been recovered.
3. Who had their only UK top ten hit in 1968 with "Fire"?

Answer: The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown

Arthur Brown certainly inhabited a crazy world, as his stage performances included him wearing a burning helmet while singing and occasionally stripping naked, an act which caused his arrest and deportation from Italy and getting kicked off a tour with Jimi Hendrix.

The band split up in 1970, but reformed with Brown as the only original member in 2000. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown at one time featured Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer who left to form Atomic Rooster, who had a UK top ten hit in 1971 with "Devil's Answer".
4. Which French car manufacturer made a car named "fire" in Spanish between 1980 and 1992?

Answer: Renault

The Renault Fuego was a four seat sports coupe which came with engine sizes from 1.4 litre to 2.2 litre fuel injected. It was fast for the times too, with the 1.6 litre turbo having a top speed of 120mph and the turbo diesel capable of 112 mph, earning it the accolade of the fastest diesel car in the world in 1982.

The Fuego was the first production car to have remote keyless central locking and also the first to have steering wheel mounted radio controls.
5. In the Great Fire of 1212, an estimated 3000 people died when trapped on which bridge?

Answer: London Bridge, London

People often think of 1666 when the Great Fire of London is mentioned and this one in 1212 seems to get forgotten even though only six people died in 1666 and the death toll in 1212 was much higher. Probably this is because nobody kept an actual account of this fire as Samuel Pepys did in 1666, although it is mentioned in the "Liber de Antiquis Legibus" ("Book on Ancient Laws"), from 1274 and was still being talked about some 400 years later in the writings of John Stowe in 1603.
6. Which tablet computer was launched by Amazon in 2011, retailing for $199 (£145)?

Answer: Kindle Fire

By 2017, the Fire was on its seventh version, and although it now had many features that the original didn't, such as double the memory, space for external memory, a camera, a microphone and bluetooth connectivity, the price had dropped to $49.
7. In 1984, who ended up in Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, with second and third degree burns after his hair caught fire while filming a Pepsi commercial?

Answer: Michael Jackson

Sparks from a firework display at the top of the stairs used in the commercial landed in Jackson's heavily gelled hair causing it to catch light. Jackson continued to perform until he reached the foot of the stairs where he was pushed to the ground by stagehands and his brothers and the flames extinguished.

Many people believe that this incident was the beginning of Jackson's flirtations with plastic surgery and the start of the painkiller addiction which eventually claimed his life.
8. In 1985, 56 people died and over 250 were injured at a football (soccer) match when the main stand erupted in fire at the Valley Parade ground of which club?

Answer: Bradford City

At 3:40 pm in the first half of the game, just five minutes before half time, the small glowing light of a cigarette butt was reported underneath the old wooden stand. By 3:44 pm the whole stand was ablaze, aided by the strong winds that day, not even giving some people the chance to leave their seats.
9. Fire is an American soccer club, playing in the Eastern Conference of MLS. From which city are the Fire?

Answer: Chicago

The team are named after the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871 and were founded in 1997. In 1998, their first season in MLS, they unexpectedly won the double, beating D.C. United 2-0 in the MLS Cup Final and Columbus Crew 2-1 in the U.S. Open Cup, with Polish striker Jerzy Podbrozny scoring in both matches.
10. Who was the American oil well firefighter that was so well known in the 1980s that he featured in advertising campaigns for Rolex watches and American Express credit cards?

Answer: Red Adair

Adair served in WWII in the bomb disposal unit and when he returned to civilian life he put into practice the techniques he had learned, becoming an expert at using a V-shaped charge of high explosives so that the high velocity blast created would snuff out the fire.

In 1962 he achieved global fame when he extinguished "The Devil's Cigarette Lighter", a 140 metre high pillar of flame in the Sahara desert which had been burning for over five months, the story of which was turned into a 1968 movie starring John Wayne called "Hellfighters".
