Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Calliope was the Greek muse of what?

Answer: Epic Poetry

She was married to Ares, the god of war, and was the mother of Linus and Orpheus, the famed musician. Her father was Zeus and her mother was Mnemosyne.
2. In 'Grey's Anatomy', what medical field does Dr Calliope (Callie) Torres specialise in?

Answer: Orthopedic surgery

Calliope Iphegenia Torres is played by Mexican-born actress, Sara Ramirez. The show was set in the Seattle Grace Hospital and the series first aired in 2005.

Ramirez won a Tony Award in 2005, for her performance in the Broadway musical 'Spamalot', which was based on the 1975 movie 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'.
3. Calliope is a small town in Australia. Where is it located?

Answer: Queensland

It has a population of about 3000 and is just over 500 kilometres north of the capital, Brisbane.
4. The Australian town of Calliope was named after the ship which bought the Governor of New South Wales to nearby Port Curtis in 1854. What was the Governor's name?

Answer: Charles FitzRoy

In 1854, the state of Queensland did not exist, with over half the country being called New South Wales. The northern state separated in 1861.

FitzRoy had an illustrious career, holding several positions within the British Empire, including service with Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo, Deputy Adjutant General of the Cape Colony (South Africa), Governor of Prince Edward Island (Canada), and Governor of various Australian states. He died in 1858.
5. 'I tripped a merry-go-round with this very unpleasing, sneezing and wheezing, the calliope crashed to the ground'. These lyrics are from which song?

Answer: Blinded by the Light

This song is probably one of the best sources of misheard lyrics ever! Bruce Springsteen wrote the song, but Manfred Mann's 1977 cover performed better. Was it about drugs? Or Springsteen's youth? Or just plain nonsense? Make up your own mind, as I have no idea!
6. A calliope is also a musical instrument. What were the original calliopes powered by?

Answer: Pressurised steam

They were a very loud and brash instrument, and were used in parades, circuses, and riverboats. More modern calliopes were powered by compressed air, but sadly, the calliope fell from usage in the 1950s. They can nowadays mainly be found in historical museums and private collections.
7. 'Percy and the Calliope' is a cute children's story about saving a calliope from being scrapped. Which series tells the story of the rescue?

Answer: Thomas the Tank Engine

Percy and Diesel are taking scrap to the junkyard, but one of the items is an old calliope. Percy attaches the calliope to his steam engine, and it works! The Fat Controller is so proud of the little train, and decides that the calliope is not a piece of junk- it is part of the heritage of Sodor.
8. In Greek mythology, what item is Calliope usually seen carrying?

Answer: Writing tablet

The poet Homer called her the 'greatest Muse' in the 'Iliad'. The name 'Calliope' comes from the Greek for 'beautiful voice'.
9. The Calliope hummingbird is native to North America. In which area are you most likely to find one?

Answer: Rocky Mountains

They are one of the smallest breeds of hummingbird in the world, averaging about eight centimetres in length, and have the same diet as others in their species- nectar and insects. During the winter months, they fly south to Central America.
10. Which Beatles song uses a recording of a calliope in the background?

Answer: Being For the Benefit of Mr Kite

Producer George Martin chopped up tape recordings of calliope and organ music, threw them in the air, and taped them together in random order! Have a listen to the choruses, and see how effective it is.
