All of these terms are connected with different jobs. Blue collar workers were typically those who engaged in manual labour while white collar referred to people holding administrative or clerical jobs in offices. The term pink collar was originally used to designate roles mostly performed by women like waitresses, shop assistants or receptionists.

It is now sometimes used to refer to all jobs in the services industry.

The occupation of the blacksmith has been around for hundreds of years. It refers to someone who forges iron and makes different objects. In a similar vein, a goldsmith works with gold and other precious stones while a silversmith works with silver.

The "Red Book" is a collection of writings by the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung originally titled "Liber Novus" ("The New Book"). In the Western world, a book containing quotes from the Chinese Chairman Mao Zedong's speeches and writings that was widely circulated within the country during the Cultural Revolution, is popularly called the "Little Red Book". The official title is "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung".

The term 'blue book' generally refers to a guide on a particular topic containing information and statistics. It is derived from the 15th century when large books covered with blue velvet were used for maintaining records in the British Parliament.

The ones designated as Red states are more likely to vote for Republicans while those that are Blue are perceived to favour the Democrats. Grey beard is sometimes used to refer to an old man. Bluebeard is a fictional character from a French folktale who was notorious for marrying multiple times and murdering his wives. Blackbeard was the nickname used by the English pirate Edward Teach.

White death is used to refer to fatalities caused by tuberculosis. It is also used for deaths caused by blizzards and avalanches. Black death refers to the bubonic plague epidemic that swept through Europe in the mid-13th century. Blue death is the nickname sometimes used for cholera, a bacterial infection that spreads through contaminated food and water.

The disease causes diarrhea and vomiting and the resultant dehydration leads to the skin turning blue which forms the basis for the nickname.
