Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous sports star found himself well and truly in the bunker in 2009 when he admitted to cheating on his wife, a former Swedish model, several times?

Answer: Tiger Woods

In November 2009, Woods denied any extra marital activities but by December had admitted to transgressions. What nobody was expecting, especially his wife Elin and his many sponsors, was the scale of his transgressions. In the months that followed, almost 120 women came forward to admit to encounters with Woods, including pole dancers, lingerie models and at least three porn stars. Sponsors dropped him at an alarming rate as the allegations continued to pour in and it is estimated Woods lost over $10 million in endorsement money.

He also lost his wife as they divorced in August 2010.
2. For which 1980 event did Rosie Ruiz "train" really hard and win, only to be stripped of her title, eight days later?

Answer: Boston Marathon

Cuban, Ruiz crossed the finish line with a time of 2:31:56, at the time the fastest recorded time for the Boston marathon, but observers noticed her face was barely flushed and her hair was still immaculately styled. Ruiz's secret to a good marathon, it turned out, wasn't intense training or great stamina, but taking the train.

She ran for the first few hundred yards, then slipped into the spectators and caught the subway before running back onto the course for the last few miles. She was stripped of her title and organisers solved the potential issue of more people trying this by installing cameras at secret points along the course to video every runner as they pass.
3. Who was the American evangelical pastor and outspoken critic of same sex marriage, that in 2006 admitted to having an extramarital relationship with a male prostitute?

Answer: Ted Haggard

Male prostitute Mike Jones alleged that he had been having an affair with Haggard for three years, also saying that Haggard was a user of crystal meth. Haggard strenuously denied the claims, before admitting that he had bought meth, but had thrown it away before using it.

After resigning from the New Life Church, which he had founded, he admitted to using drugs, as well as engaging in "some sexual activity" with Jones and having an inappropriate relationship with a male member of his congregation.

In 2010, Haggard and his wife, who had stood by him through all this, founded a new church in Colorado Springs.
4. Lance Armstrong is possibly the best known cheat in the world of sport. Apart from all records of his entry in the 2000 Olympic Games being removed, he was also stripped of how many Tour de France titles?

Answer: Seven

Allegations of doping dogged Armstrong during his career, during which he won the Tour de France in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, Following an investigation, he was stripped of his titles in 2012 and named by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) as the ringleader of the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping program that cycling has ever seen.
5. Divine Brown was a Los Angeles prostitute that movie star Hugh Grant was arrested with in 1995. Which actress and model was Grant in a relationship with at the time?

Answer: Liz Hurley

Some of the more humorous aspects of Grant receiving oral pleasure from Brown included the fact that the act was done in Grant's personal BMW as Brown charged $100 to go to a hotel and Hollywood star Grant had only $60. Then, the arresting officer testified in court that he only noticed the car because the brake lights kept flashing on and off caused by Grant repeatedly catching the pedal with his foot.

In the end, Brown was fined $1,150 and sentenced to 180 days in jail while Grant was fined $1,180 and given two years probation. Both were also ordered to attend AIDS awareness classes and although Hurley stood by him, the couple went their separate ways in 2000.
6. Which country were forced to return their intellectual disability basketball gold medals, won at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics after it was proven they were cheating?

Answer: Spain

The 1996 Atlanta Paralympics were the first in which intellectually disabled athletes were given full medal status and in order to compete, athletes must have an IQ of 75 or below. Spain found ways round this by either not asking athletes to complete the required tests or asking them to perform below their usual levels.

The investigation into the team discovered that ten of the 12 players on the basketball team had no mental impairment at all and concerns over a repeat of this led to the Intellectual Disability class being removed from the games completely in 2004 and 2008, before it was reinstated for London 2012.
7. Surely world leaders don't cheat? Well, Bill Clinton hit the headlines in 1998 for his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, and in 2002, former UK Prime Minister John Major admitted he had had a four year affair with which Conservative party backbencher?

Answer: Edwina Currie

The affair began in 1984 when Major was a whip in the Thatcher government and Currie was a backbencher and continued until 1988 by which time Major was chief secretary of the treasury and Currie was health minister. Currie admitted in 2002 that she loved Major even after the affair ended and he later became Prime Minister in 1990, and she was also very disappointed not to have been mentioned in Major's autobiography, but that revealing their affair was not an act of revenge.
8. In 1988, who won Canada's first Olympic gold medal for sprinting since 1928, but three days later had to hand it back?

Answer: Ben Johnson

Johnson was born in Jamaica and immigrated to Canada when he was 15, quickly establishing himself as a talented youth athlete. He rose through the ranks and in 1987 broke the record for the fastest 100 metres time at the World Championships in Rome. He followed this in 1988 with Olympic gold, and breaking his own record with a time of 9.79 seconds. Unfortunately the subsequent urine test proved that Johnson was doping and he was disqualified.

He also admitted to doping at the time of his 1987 record and that too was rescinded.
9. Which famous lady in history cheated on her husband and brother, Ptolemy XIII, with Julius Caesar?

Answer: Cleopatra

Family marriage was quite common at the time in order to keep control of family assets, and many historians believe that the parents of Cleopatra were also brother and sister. She married her brother at age 18 but after she tried to take sole possession of the throne, he banished her from Egypt and a civil war ensued which Cleopatra won due to her allegiance with Caesar.

She then assumed the throne once more and married another brother, Ptolemy XIV, but continued her relationship with Caesar until his assassination. Can it really be considered cheating if your husband is your brother?
10. In 2007, which American football team were stripped of their first-round draft pick the following year and fined $250,000, and in 2015 were stripped of two draft picks and fined $1 million for a different offence?

Answer: New England Patriots

In 2007, the Patriots were disciplined for violating league rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition, when they videotaped defensive play signals of the New York Jets from an unauthorised location. Head coach Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine, the largest ever in the history of the league.

Then in 2015, they were hit with another big fine for deliberately deflating balls, making them easier to throw and catch in their 45-7 defeat of Indianapolis Colts. Star quarterback Tom Brady was also banned for four games for being well aware of the ruse and doing nothing to stop it.
