Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A diamond is the hardest substance on earth. What is the second hardest substance?

Answer: Sapphire

Diamonds are 90 times harder than the second hardest substance, which is the sapphire or ruby.

The extreme hardness of diamonds is due to their amazingly tight crystalline structure. A diamond's atoms are more densely packed than any other substance. They have one "weakness" that allows them to be cut into gemstones. They can be cleaved in four directions. It takes a cutter of great skill to cut a diamond.
2. What designation are diamonds known for?

Answer: Hardest naturally-occurring substance

Diamonds are the hardest substance on earth that is naturally-occurring, but they can be cut by other man-made objects.
3. Where are diamonds found?

Answer: All of these

The deepest that diamonds have been found is 4,000 ft, however, diamonds start 75 miles into the earth where extreme heat and undersea pressure form them. Volcanic eruptions are needed to push them up closer to the surface. All natural diamonds are at least 100 million to 3 billion years old.
4. Which of these is not one of the four Cs?

Answer: Condition

The four Cs are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight. Cut refers to the proportions of the facets. There are 58 facets in most diamonds. They are cut precisely to maximize the reflective properties of the stone. The color of diamonds is on a scale from D to Z. D is colorless, it is however called "white". Stones that are J or better are considered to be the most desirable. From S to Z, they are yellow to brown. Clarity refers to how devoid of spots the stone is. Carat weight is measured in points.

A one carat diamond weighs 200 milligrammes and has 100 points. A half carat diamond would be said to be 50 points.
5. What is the very bottom of a diamond called?

Answer: Culet

The culet is a facet cut across the tip of the diamond. Not all stones have a visible culet.
6. What is the term for the spots found in diamonds?

Answer: Inclusions

Clarity grading of diamonds goes from Flawless to I3. Flawless is just that. No inclusions at all. These are very rare and really expensive. VS1/VS2 means that the inclusions are very difficult to see with 10X magnification. I3 is very included and wouldn't look nice at all.
7. Diamonds get the most sparkle from the cut. What is the best cut?

Answer: Ideal

The best cut is Ideal. Only about 3% of diamonds are Ideal Cut. Ideal cut reflects almost all of the light. That's what makes them sparkle. Very good is the next grade and about 15% of diamonds fit this grade. Most of the light is reflected back.
8. Which one is a diamond shape?

Answer: They all are

The other shapes that are currently used are: Round, Emerald, Marquis, Pear, Heart, Oval, Trillion and Radiant.
9. Diamonds come in a variety of colors known as Fancy.

Answer: True

Natural diamonds come in many colors. Yellow, pink, green and blue, with the deepest color being the most expensive. They can be more expensive than their white counterparts.
10. In the movie "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days", the advertising phrase that Ben came up with for the De Lauder Diamond account was what?

Answer: "Ladies, frost yourself."

If you haven't seen this movie about love and diamonds, you need to get right to the Video store and rent it. The Isadora diamond is a HUGE canary diamond that looks fantastic on Kate Hudson... Matthew McConaughey is worth his weight in diamonds!
