Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are many assertions doing the rounds in relation to food. One is that you shouldn't swallow chewing gum because it takes the human body about seven years to digest it. Is this a true or false statement?

Answer: False

This is very much an urban myth. While chewing gum contains several non-food components (wax and gum included), the medical evidence shows that it passes through the body like pretty much any other product. That is, hours (or days at most) not years!
2. The web is a source of some very interesting and amusing quotations. One story is that early in his career, Elvis Presley was told: "Stick with driving a truck, because you'll never make it as a singer". Is this a true or false quotation?

Answer: True

Snopes.com has verified this quotation as reliable. Elvis was driving a truck while trying to get his singing career started. A man called Eddie Bond has been attributed to this statement: he auditioned Elvis for his band but didn't like what he heard and rejected him.
3. Advance fee frauds such as the Nigerian scam hit our in-boxes with regular frequency, and are now commonly recognised for what they are. However, scammers have made millions of dollars out of these by fooling people into parting with their money and/or bank details. True or false?

Answer: True

In the early days of the Nigerian scam, the Australian government estimated that victims of the scam lost about $55 million per year in that country alone. While computer users are becoming much more savvy, so too are the scammers. A more recent twist on the scam is setting up an internet romance and convincing the poor person who thinks he or she is about to meet their loving partner to help out with travel costs.

The person never arrives, of course, once the money has been wired.
4. I hear a lot of interesting animal 'facts'. One is that dogs can only see in black and white. Is that true or false?

Answer: False

Dogs are able to perceive colour, but in a different way to people. They have a much more limited spectrum of colours that they can see, but they are certainly able to see many more shades than black and white.
5. The events of September 11, 2001 certainly spawned a large volume of information-sharing. One story doing the rounds was that Time Magazine considered naming Osama Bin Laden "Man of the Year". Did that turn out to be true or false?

Answer: True

This sparked a large amount of anger among Americans in particular, who believed that this honour should not be bestowed on a known terrorist. However, Time Magazine pointed out to its detractors that the "Man of the Year" was not an honour nor an award, but a recognition of someone who had great influence on the world, good or bad.

After a lengthy debate, the magazine agreed that New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani was a more worthy recipient.
6. King Henry VIII was very famous for his six wives, but also for his lazy, luxurious life. Is it true or false that late in his life he had to be moved around using mechanical objects due to his infirmity?

Answer: True

There are several unresolved issues about Henry's life, including whether or not he had syphilis (most academics say not) or diabetes. It is generally agreed that his jousting injury had some devastating effects on his health and led to a fairly rapid decline, both physically and mentally.
7. I've heard many times that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object that can be seen from space. Now I guess you have to define what space is, but according to astronauts who observed the earth from shuttles, is this claim true or false?

Answer: False

At 180 miles above earth, astronaut Jay Apt could see a number of man-made objects but the Great Wall was not one of them! He put this down to the fact that the wall is made from similar-coloured material surrounding the structure.
8. There are quite a few rumours about Walt Disney. Is it true or false that his body is frozen in a cryonic chamber, awaiting the future technology to awaken him?

Answer: False

This rumour is thought to have arisen due to the secrecy around Walt's burial plans. He was a very private person and elected to have a private burial. In the absence of details, this very interesting (but ultimately false) story arose.
9. There were lots of stories circulating in late 2012 and early 2013 about horse meat being substituted for beef (and sometimes pork) in parts of Europe. Did this turn out to be a true or false story?

Answer: True

Supermarket shelves in France, Britain and Sweden all had horse meat removed from them following admissions that it had indeed been substituted for other meat. While it was not considered to be a significant health issue in most cases (the meat is safe for human consumption), it was a scandal due to the fact it was sold as something it was clearly not.
10. Finally, let's get to the quiz topic. Carrots do cry because they have the vegetable equivalent of human tear ducts and a small amount of water residue (a carrot tear) appears when they are taken from the ground. True or false?

Answer: False

The debate continues to rage among scientists about whether carrots and other vegetables 'cry' due to the small electrical discharges they make when removed from the ground. What has been established, however, is that there are no actual tears.
