Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is credited with inventing the word "hobnob"?

Answer: Shakespeare

"Hobnob" (meaning to drink socially, or be sociable with others) was one of over a thousand words that Shakespeare invented by using different combinations of words that already existed. Marie Curie was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics along with her husband Pierre in 1903. Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the most successful artists of our time, credited with painting the "Mona Lisa".
2. The small dot at the top of the small letters "j" and "i" is commonly known as a what?

Answer: Tittle

A tittle was first used in the 11th century so people reading written words could tell the difference of letters that were close together. This is also where the phrase "dot your i's and cross your t's" came from (meaning to make sure every thing is right.)
3. What color is a polar bear's skin?

Answer: Black

A polar bear's skin is black because it helps to absorb sunlight to keep the polar bear warm in the cold temperatures. Neither is its fur white. It is actually clear so that the sunlight can travel down the 'tube' of the hair and retain the warmth.
4. What is the name of the dog on the "Cracker Jack" box?

Answer: Bingo

Bingo, along with his "master" Sailor Jack, were both introduced in 1918, roughly 25 years after the product first became popular.
5. This "diminutive" 19th century French leader was rumoured to have a fear of cats.

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

The fear of cats, known as ailurophobia, is reported to be a fear of many other world leaders, such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar.
6. This "noble" chemist is credited with inventing dynamite.

Answer: Alfred Nobel

Ironically, it was the destructive aftermath of his invention of dynamite that led Alfred Nobel to create the Nobel Peace Prize. He didn't want, after his death, to be known for such a negative legacy.
7. This is the only insect that can turn its head 360 degrees.

Answer: the praying mantis

In addition to being the only insects to turn their head all the way around, praying mantises have excellent camouflage skills, much like other stick insects.
8. This "electric" statesman wanted the turkey to be the National Bird of the United States, not the bald eagle. Who was he?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin first discussed his reasons wanting the turkey as the National Bird of the United States in a letter to his daughter. He respected the turkey because of its significance as a symbol of equality in America. He saw the bald eagle as just a bird who perched on dead trees, looking down on everything.
9. This event occurs when three or more celestial bodies line up with each other.

Answer: Syzygy

The most popular instances of a syzygy is during a solar or lunar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, rendering the Moon almost invisible.
10. In 1934, this baseball player paid a fan $20 dollars for the return of the baseball he hit for his 700th career home run. Can you name him?

Answer: Babe Ruth

On July 13th 1934, Babe Ruth hit his 700th career home run. He looked for the ball, and later the fan who caught it returned it to Ruth. The fan received $20, and another signed baseball.
