Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did American colonists protest the Tea Tax with the Boston Tea Party?

Answer: The tax lowered the price of tea

The American colonists preferred Dutch tea to English tea. The English Parliament placed an embargo on Dutch tea in the colonies, so a huge smuggling profession developed. To combat this, the English government LOWERED the tax on tea so that the English tea would be price competitive with Dutch teas.

The colonists protested by dumping the tea as a way of saying "we will not tolerate this."
2. Did the 18th Amendment to the Constitution (Prohibition) outlaw drinking?

Answer: No - drinking was still legal during Prohibition.

Drinking alcohol was never outlawed - only making, transporting, and selling it. Liquor could legally be consumed provided it was purchased before Prohibition.
3. Why were baseball's Chicago White Sox nicknamed "The Black Sox"?

Answer: Their dirty uniforms

Charles Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox, was a notorious tightwad. Unlike other teams, he did not pay for the cleaning of the team's uniforms. Since this was back in the days when players made very little money, often they played a few games between washings.
Ref: Gale Encyclopedia of Pop Culture specifically place the original Black Sox nickname in 1918 at http://www.findarticles.com/g1epc/tov/2419100139/p1/article.jhtml Also, this site used an extensive bibliography for its research

4. How many bars were on the Confederate States' flag "The Stars and Bars"?

Answer: 3 horizontal bars

The Stars and Bars was 7 white stars (for the 7 original states) in a circle in a blue canton. The bars were red, white, and red. The flag that today represents the Confederacy is actually the Naval Jack - a rectangular version of the Battle Flag with medium blue bars instead of dark blue.
5. Who first developed a theory of evolution?

Answer: Jean-Baptiste Lamarck

First published in 1801, Lamarck believed that if an organism acquired a trait, they could pass the trait on to their offspring. His example was giraffes. A giraffe would stretch his neck to reach higher leaves. As a result, the baby giraffes would thereby have longer necks. He also invented the term "invertebrate".
6. What was the first country to ratify the United Nations' charter?

Answer: Nicaragua

Allied and neutral countries met in San Francisco to draw up the United Nations Charter. The meeting adjourned on 26 June 1945 with 50 countries signing the charter. The US ratified it on 28 July 1945.
7. Alexander Hamilton was born in the British West Indies. What does this mean?

Answer: Absolutely nothing

It is true that today a person must be born in the US to become President. However, the Constitution allows people who were citizens of the US when the Constitution was adopted to become the President. As such, Hamilton could hold any government office regardless of where he was born.
8. The smallest (in face value) US currency note that is legal tender today is worth how much?

Answer: 3 cents

By law, every currency note that the US government ever printed is still legal tender. During the Civil War, the US had to print fractional currency since metal for coinage was scarce.
9. The presidential election of 1864 was probably the most important in American history. What political party did the winner, Abraham Lincoln, belong to?

Answer: Unionist

By changing the name of his party to "Unionist", Lincoln was able to court voters who would never vote Republican. In addition, he was able to drop his current vice-president Hannibal Hamlin and run with the only southern Democrat senator not to resign his seat - Andrew Johnson.
10. Who is interred in Grant's Tomb?

Answer: Julia Grant

President Grant is interred there with his wife Julia.
