Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I had bought my mom a birthstone ring, with an emerald setting for her birthday, what month would I have given it to her in?

Answer: May

The birthstone for July is a ruby, November is a topaz and February is a amethyst. The emerald is also used for the 20th and the 35th wedding anniversary.
2. When buying an emerald, you need to be careful not to buy a fake. Which of the following would be a synthetic emerald?

Answer: Kimberly Emerald

Unless you are knowledgeable on gemstones it would be difficult to detect a fake. Biron Emerald, Regency Emerald and Linde Emerald are just a few names of synthetic emeralds.
3. Which of the following famous emeralds can be seen at the Smithsonian Museum?

Answer: Chalk Emerald

Mrs. O. Roy Chalk donated the Chalk Emerald to the Smithsonian Museum in 1972. The Chalk Emerald is 37.82 carats and surrounded by 60 small pear shaped diamonds set in a ring. Before this emerald was a ring it was a necklace; the emerald was removed and cut down to be set in the ring.
4. In 1973 the emerald was chosen as a state gem, for which state?

Answer: North Carolina

The emerald was chosen because of the emerald mines in North Carolina. Some of the largest emeralds found in North American have been found in North Carolina. Besides the emerald, there have been over 300 authenticated minerals found in North Carolina, some being gemstones.
5. Which country is known by the term "Emerald Isle"?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland has often been called the "Emerald Isle", possibly because of the association with the green in shamrocks, leprechauns and so forth. Also, Ireland is often portrayed as a lush green country.
6. Evidence indicates that the pharaohs of ancient Egypt enjoyed emeralds. What is the name, modern civilization gave the emerald mine, where many of the emeralds for the pharaohs were mined?

Answer: Cleopatra's Mine

When Cleopatra's mine was re-discovered over a hundred years ago, it was almost empty of emeralds. Some historians feel that the emerald was one of Cleopatra's favourite gems.
7. The Mohs scale is used worldwide to measure the hardness of gemstones. What does the emerald register on the Mohs scale?

Answer: 7.5 - 8

An emerald is quite hard, it is also very brittle. An emerald will shatter if it is hit hard enough, so I would treat emeralds carefully. In 1812 when the Mohs scale was developed, the mineral talc scored a 1 and the diamond scored a 10.
8. Natural emeralds are a non-renewable source, so once the emerald mines are depleted they will be gone from the earth's surface. They were formed in the earth's crust, how long ago did the oldest known emeralds form?

Answer: 2.6 billion years ago

Emeralds are beryl. Pure beryl is colourless, the gemstone is determined by the make-up of the elements that have been added by nature to the beryl. These elements also determine the color of the gemstone, with emerald the elements are chromium and vanadium. Normally these two elements are found in different parts of the earth's crust, so logically the emerald should not exist. I guess things were different millions of years ago.
9. In an emerald it is acceptable for the gem to contain flaws, the flaws add character. It is also acceptable for an emerald to be treated before it is sold. What is used to treat the emerald?

Answer: Oil

An emerald is treated to enhance the color. When you purchase a piece of emerald jewelry you should occasionally have it re-treated, as well as avoid putting it in water or a soapy water solution.
10. In the legend titled, "The Story of the First Emerald", the King of India wished to possess a particular emerald. The emerald at that time was an unknown gem, what shape did the emerald come in?

Answer: A vase

This is my condensed version of the story, I have left a lot out as well as changed the wording to shorten it.
In the story a traveller told the King of India that an emerald was the one gem he did not have. He was told to search for the emerald vase "where the waves of the sea never roll." So the King asked his wise men for the emerald, with no success.
The King then went himself to the sea, and using magic, asked for the emerald. The Spirit of the sea wanted to give it to him, while the spirit of air wished to keep it. In a fight between the two spirits the vase was dropped. The shattered pieces of the emerald vase scattered over the earth, each piece seeding the emerald mines of today. In some of the stories I've read the King is of a different nationality.
