Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first log cabins in the United States were built in Delaware, but who brought the idea for building them to America?

Answer: Finns

Finnish immigrants arrived in the mid-1600s and set about building their new homes from logs. The log cabin became a symbol of the American pioneer. A cabin from the period is preserved and on display at the Delaware Agricultural Museum in Dover.
2. With much exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, how many national parks are there in Delaware?

Answer: 0

Despite having about 380 miles (611 km) of shoreline, Delaware has no national seashores or national parks. There are no national historic sites or monuments. It is the only U.S. state without any.
3. Delaware was the first place in the western hemisphere to build which structures?

Answer: breakwaters

The Delaware Breakwaters are on Cape Henlopen in Lewes. The originals were built in 1828. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
4. How many counties does Delaware have?

Answer: 3

Despite being part of the Eastern megalopolis, Delaware has only three counties. The northernmost, New Castle County, is the most industrialized; Kent and Sussex counties have always been more agricultural.
5. Barratt's Chapel in Frederica, Delaware is the oldest church building in America. Which denomination started there?

Answer: Methodist Episcopal

The Methodist Episcopal Church, the forerunner of the United Methodist Church, was founded at the church in 1784 as a formal denomination for practitioners of Methodism in America. The building looks little different than when it was built in 1780; it now contains a museum of artifacts from the early days of the religion in the U.S.
6. As a state that depends on tourist revenue, which environmental legislation did Delaware pass in 1971?

Answer: Coastal Zone Act

As the first state to ratify the United States constitution, Delaware became the first U.S. state. It was also the first state to pass a coastal zone act. Realizing that its coastal waters represented the future of the state, the legislature passed regulations barring industries that polluted from building along the shoreline.

The U.S. Congress passed the national Coastal Zone Management Act in 1972. The U.S. Natural Resources Defense Council rated Delaware beaches the cleanest among the thirty coastal U.S. states.
7. Part of the northern boundary of Delaware has an unusual name; what is it?

Answer: Twelve-Mile Circle

In 1681, King Charles II granted land to William Penn north of Maryland. An exception was made to skirt part of Delaware. It was measured as a twelve-mile arc beginning at the cupola of the courthouse in New Castle, going from northwest to northeast. Thus began a dispute over land boundaries which would not be settled until 2008.
8. Rehoboth Beach is the largest resort town in Delaware, but what was it originally?

Answer: a church camp

Some of the land now known as Rehoboth Beach was purchased by the Methodist Church of America for a summer camp and meeting place in 1872. The town sprang up around it and a small population lives there year-round.
9. This might surprise you, but what is the highest point in Delaware?

Answer: Ebright Road

Delaware is mostly a coastal plain, so there are no quick elevation changes; its mean altitude is only 60 feet (18 m). Ebright Road, near Wilmington, is 445.58 ft (135.8 m) above sea level. It beat its nearest competitor by two feet!
10. The Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delaware highlights the early history of the du Pont family in America. What was the first product manufactured by the du Ponts?

Answer: gunpowder

In 1802, French immigrant E.I. du Pont de Nemours built a black powder mill along Brandywine Creek, near Wilmington. It became the largest powder mill in the world. Becoming known simply as DuPont, it eventually incorporated chemical and plastics manufacture and biosciences. Among their inventions are nylon, Teflon and Kevlar.
