Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which former American president fits in with the following - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln? Don't try to be too creative; the correct answer to this question is "carved in stone", in my opinion.

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Mount Rushmore National Monument located in South Dakota features the faces of four former U.S. Presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt's face, the last to be completed, was finished in 1939.
2. You may recognize the following trio as being the names of celestial stars, but I'm looking for a different kind of star here. Which of the choices was connected to - or should I say harnessed with - "stars" named Aldebaran, Antares and Altair in an epic movie?

Answer: Rigel

These are the names given to the four white horses that charioteer Ben Hur (Charlton Heston) pilots to triumph in the 1959 cinema epic. Their owner Sheik Ilderim (Hugh Griffith) names them after different stars in the night sky. He claims that their mother Mira is so beautiful that if he were to take her with him when he journeys away from home, his people would mourn her absence.
3. The following three made up a particularly "fearsome" group on Sunday afternoons in the 1960s. Can you pick out the gridiron great that completes the quartet along with Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy and Roosevelt Grier?

Answer: Deacon Jones

Olsen, Jones, Grier and Lundy were the "Fearsome Foursome," the popular nickname given to the defensive front four of the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams during the 1960s. Even though other teams, including the Rams again in the 1970s, had their own versions of the Fearsome Foursome, the '60s lineup led by perennial All-Pros Olsen and Jones was most closely associated with the moniker. Roman Gabriel was quarterback for the Rams, and Fred Dryer joined the team as defensive end in the 1970s, after several members of the original Fearsome Foursome had retired.
4. An "invasion" took place on American soil in the 1960s, and rock and roll would never again be the same. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Kinks were part of that invading force, as was which of the groups listed below?

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

All choices listed were successful and often ground-breaking rock bands, but the Beatles, Stones, Kinks and the DC-5 were all part of the "British Invasion" that took America and the rest of the world by storm in the 1960s. The other choices listed are among the most successful American bands of the rock era.
5. It's time for a literary foursome. Can you find the name of the sister who appears in a classic American novel along with Meg, Beth, and Amy?

Answer: Jo

Louisa May Alcott based much of the novel "Little Women" on things she and her three sisters experienced growing up in New England. Jo is the second-oldest of the March sisters. The book has been brought to the silver screen several times, featuring such fine actresses as Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.
6. One of the most popular youth-oriented organizations begun in the United States is the 4-H Club. Its official emblem is a four-leaf clover with each petal adorned by the letter H. Three of the words represented by the letter H are Head, Heart and Hands. Can you pick out the fourth word represented by the 4-H Club clover?

Answer: Health

The organization was founded in the 20th century and involves youth in various activities and projects such as raising crops and livestock, camping, public speaking and talent competitions.

The four H's are part of the organization's pledge, originally written by Otis Hall in 1918:

"I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world."
7. Here are three items from a 1939 musical movie classic. In it, four seekers become close friends on their quest to meet a wizard and have their wishes granted. Can you select the fourth item that goes with a heart, a brain, and a way home?

Answer: Courage

These items were the four things wished for in the movie classic "The Wizard of Oz" - by the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow, Dorothy, and the Cowardly Lion, respectively. The movie, directed by Victor Fleming and starring 17-year-old Judy Garland, was nominated for Best Picture and won Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Song.
8. You'll probably recognize the names of the following trio of schools. Which of the following choices would be in the same "league" as Harvard, Yale and Penn?

Answer: Dartmouth

The three universities listed, along with Dartmouth College, are four of the nine American schools comprising the Ivy League. The league's members are among the oldest and most prestigious schools in the country.
9. The U. S. Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open are three of the four major tournaments in a popular international sport. Can you pick out the fourth?

Answer: Wimbledon

These are considered the four major tournaments in competitive tennis. They are also referred to as the "Grand Slam" events, because of the difficulty of and prestige gained in sweeping all four tournaments in a given year. Among the few ever to win all four singles titles in the same season are Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) and Steffi Graf (1988).

The Masters and British Open are two of professional golf's four major tournaments.
10. This famous quartet appears both in the pages of a popular comic book that is now more than 40 years old, as well as a pair of movies from 2005 and 2007. Which character fills out this "fantastic" foursome along with Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm?

Answer: Reed Richards

They are the superhero members of the Fantastic Four, first published by Marvel Comics in 1961. After exposure to cosmic rays during a space journey, each member of the quartet acquired different superhuman abilities. They became known as Mr. Fantastic (Richards), the Invisible Girl (Sue Storm), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Grimm). Fantastic Four was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Peter Parker is a Marvel Comics character whose super alter-ego is Spiderman. He is not a member of the Fantastic Four, even though they have appeared together infrequently in the comics series. Gale Storm is a former singer and actress, and apparently is not related to Sue and Johnny.
