Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Firestarter" is a novel by Stephen King about a young girl named Charlie who has the ability to start fires with her thoughts and predict the near future. The novel was made into a movie and featured which young talent in the title role?

Answer: Drew Barrymore

This was Drew Barrymore's third movie role after "Altered States" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial". All three movies, along with the one that followed ("Irreconcilable Differences"), garnered young Drew many acting nominations. She has gone on to become a successful adult actress as well as a director and producer. Jodie Foster and Anna Paquin also became well-known as child actors and have transitioned their careers to adult roles. Renee Zellweger's career started when she was a young adult.

"Firestarter" the novel was considered a science fiction story, and had excerpts printed in "Omni" magazine as well as winning Best Novel for the British Fantasy Award. In the story, Charlie was born to parents who had earned money in college by participating in an experiment of a hallucinogenic drug, LOT-6, that gave her mother telekinetic powers and her father the ability to make people do as he wanted through autohypnotic mind domination, but at the cost of nosebleeds and migraines. They left the agency and pursued a quiet life, but the agency never stopped watching them. When Charlie's 'talent' for firestarting (pyrokenesis) was discovered by the agency, they wanted to claim her, forcing her father to take her on the run.

2. The "Three Forty Three" has served the New York Fire Department as Marine Company 1 in what capacity?

Answer: Fire boat

On September 11, 2009, the fireboat Three Forty Three was launched into service. Christened eight years after the events that happened in NYC, the fireboat's name honoured all those fire fighters who died that day in 2001. The Three Forty Three replaced the fireboat John D. McKean, which had been in service for over 50 years. The fireboat also has a sister ship called Fire Fighter II which serves the FDNY as Marine Company 9; it came into service just over a year later. These fireboats have a top speed of 18 knots when called into action. However, when they get there they can pump an amazing 50,000 gallons of water a minute.

3. Mozilla Firefox, an open source web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation, went by which of the following names early in its history?

Answer: Firebird

The project originally adopted the name Phoenix until Phoenix Technologies, creators of core system software for PCs, kicked up a show about trademark infringement. Mozilla then changed the name to Firebird, an alternate name for a Phoenix, but it got them into hot water with the Firebird free database software project. Strike three; they decided to put the name Mozilla ahead of Firebird to create some differentiation but the good folk at Firebird were still not happy. Finally, after a bit of head scratching, they settled on Firefox in February of 2004 and haven't looked back since.

4. Which US president used fireside chats to help the nation through some very difficult years?

Answer: F. Roosevelt

Between 1933 and 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave thirty fireside chats using the radio to speak directly to the American public to explain his new government policies and later to discuss the course of WWII. Thirteen of the addresses were pre-WWII and seventeen dealt directly with the war. FDR's warm and soothing voice made the radio a perfect medium for him to communicate his ideas directly to the public while hiding his infirmities as a result of polio.

5. The children's TV show "Fireball XL5" was created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in the early '60s. How many episodes were there in total?

Answer: 39

The show first aired in the UK in 1962 with the episode "Planet 46". It ran for 39 episodes, with the final one called "Space Magnet" in 1963. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, besides creating the show, provided some of the characters' voices. Paul Maxwell provided the voice for Colonel Steve Zodiac in "Fireball XL5". He also appeared in the 1986 film "Aliens" as the head of the review board. Professor Matthew "Matt" Matic in "Fireball XL5" was voiced by David Graham, who went on to provide the voice for Grandpa Pig in the animated show "Peppa Pig". John Bluthal provided the voice for Jock Campbell in "Fireball XL5", and went on to appear in the 1997 film "Fifth Element" as the Egyptologist seen at the start of the film.

To accompany the show, its popular theme song went onto become a hit in the UK reaching, number 32 in the UK charts. The song was called "Fireball", and one of the lyrics was parodied in the animated TV show "Captain N: The Game Master". The original lyric was "I wish I was a spaceman" was altered to "I wish I was a Wombatman", which was one of the titled episodes for the show.

6. Named for Scotsman Alexander Russell, but native to Mexico, the attractive Firecracker plant Russelia equisetiformis is an annual that prefers full sun to partial shade in a warm location.

Answer: True

The firecracker plant is, in fact, an annual, but as it self-seeds readily it can be left to fill an unattractive spot in the same way a perennial might, when in a tropical or sub-tropical location. It will flower for a good part of the year, with a bright spot of red or yellow.

Care should taken that it does not 'get away', however, as it can be invasive. It does not do well outdoors in cooler climates, where the recommendation is to grow it in a pot and bring it indoors when the cold weather arrives. There it will be bright and eye-catching to the home.

7. Kenneth Colley has played the roles of a WWII German officer and an Admiral for the Dark Side in TV and movies. In the 1982 movie "Firefox" he played a Soviet soldier by the name of Kontarsky. What was the rank that Kontarsky held in the movie?

Answer: Colonel

In the 1982 Clint Eastwood film "Firefox", Kenneth played the role of Colonel Kontarsky. In the movie Kontarsky is in charge of security of the MIG 31 Firefox, however Mitchell Gant, played by Clint Eastwood, still manages to steal the plane.

Kenneth Colley was born in Manchester, UK in 1937. He is more known for playing the role of Admiral Piett in the "Star Wars" movies, which is a role he made his own in the "Empire Strikes Back". Due to fan support of his character, he was used again in "The Return of the Jedi". In 2012, he once again voiced the role of the Admiral in the animated show "Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out". As well as his recurring role in the "Star War" franchise, he has also played the role of Jesus in the 1979 film "Monty Python's Life of Brian".

8. One step from Heaven, which Australian punk rock pioneers recorded the 1986 hit "Just Like Fire Would"?

Answer: The Saints

The Saints burst onto the punk rock scene in 1976 with their seminal debut single "(I'm) Stranded", full of buzz saw guitar and boisterous vocals. Their impact was such that Bob Geldof proclaimed, "Rock music in the seventies was changed by three bands-the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and The Saints". Several line-up changes didn't diminish their output but did impact some of their quality. "Just Like Fire Would" saw them return to favour and make their way back into the charts. In 2013, Bruce Springsteen opened the Australian leg of his "Wrecking Ball" tour with a cover of this song.

9. Which of the following positions in baseball is often referred to as the fireman?

Answer: Closing pitcher

The closing pitcher can also be called the short relief, the stopper or, simply, the closer. The closing pitcher's role is, as the name implies, to close the game out while their team is in front. There is debate that closers are not required, and that they are generally called upon in the ninth innings when the result is a foregone conclusion. The term "fireman" arose from the use of relief pitchers (who are called upon to replace pitchers who are injured, fatigued or simply not performing) and their ability to pull a team out of trouble or, saying it another way, "putting out the fire".

10. Which comedy troupe gave us "Nick Danger, Third Eye" and recordings such as "We're All Bozos on This Bus"?

Answer: Firesign Theater

Firesign Theater was originally a quartet, but sadly founding member Peter Bergman died in 2012. The remaining three members, David Ossman, Phil Austin and Phil Proctor continued to perform after his death. The group first was heard on radio in the 1960s and went on to record albums such as "We're All Bozos on This Bus" and "Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like Him". The humor is a bit surreal. The group's name may be a nod to FDR's fireside chats, but the adaptation refers to the fact that the four members were all born into astrological fire signs.
