Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The word "fart" has often been thought to be very vulgar and profane. Which author had the phrase "a fizzing and sulphuric fart" cut out of his 1929 novel "Look Homeward, Angel" by his publisher?

Answer: Thomas Wolfe

Throughout history the word "fart" has been removed from various writings including Thomas Wolfe's novel. In contrast, it has also appeared in print as early as Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales", written at the end of the 14th century. In fact, in 1607 the English Parliament was responsible for the publication of a work called "The Parliament Fart", which was a symbolic protest against The House of Lords and King James I.
2. Children's author William Kotzwinkle has written a series of books that feature which of the following characters?

Answer: Walter the Farting Dog

Kotzwinkle's books about Walter the Farting Dog have been very popular. These stories have been translated into over a dozen languages. You can also buy a stuffed animal version of Walter which farts when you squeeze him!
3. Just what exactly is Fotballaget Fart?

Answer: A Norwegian football club

Fotballaget Fart is a Norwegian football club that is based in Vang. The team colors are red and white. Their home games are played at Fartbana Stadion.
4. The crinoid is an unusual marine creature who has a u-shaped intestinal system which means that the flatulence it produces is expelled near which other body part?

Answer: Mouth

The crinoid, also called the sea lily, is like all animals that fart. It would expel all intestinal gas out of its sphincter, which sadly, is located beside this unfortunate animal's mouth. Not very appetizing!
5. Is it true that some people never fart?

Answer: No, all people fart.

Simply put, all people fart; some with more regularity than others. The amount of intestinal gas, its odor and the frequency with which it is released varies greatly. If a person is alive they will expel flatulence, whether they admit to it or not. Just as an interesting note...it is very common for a recently deceased human body to fart, often more than once!
6. According to their website, what must someone be able to do to become a member of The Royal Order of the Blue Flame?

Answer: Have your farts blow blue flames when lit

According to their website, what must someone be able to do to become a member of The Royal Order of the Blue Flame? I am not kidding when I tell you that The Royal Order of the Blue Flame has a small website. Most flatulence contains hydrogen which is flammable and burns orange when lit. About one third of the population also emits methane which burns blue when lit.

The site also admits that one in four people who attempt to light a fart are injured while doing so. Wikipedia also contains an article on the practice of lighting farts. I suspect that the vast majority of the members of The Royal Order of the Blue Flame are male, as they are usually a little more proud of their flatulence prowess.

The "pull my finger" game almost always involves an adult male.

This is just an observation and no disrespect is intended.
7. "Fart Proudly" (1781) is the popular name of a notorious essay written by which of these famous men?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

"Fart Proudly" is a lesser known writing that is attributed to Benjamin Franklin. In a somewhat sarcastic tone he addresses the scientific community's increasingly pretentious interest in impractical matters such as flatulence. In this writing he suggests to them that it may be of ultimate importance to research ways in which the fragrance of flatulence could be improved.

He suggested to the scientific world that they come up with a substance that when added to food would change the smell of flatulence into something as agreeable as perfume.

This essay can be found in "Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School", (1990) a collection of some of Franklin's lesser known writings which show his oddly eclectic sense of humor and wit.
8. In the spirit of a quiz on flatulence, what does the term "SBD" usually represent?

Answer: Silent But Deadly

Some flatulence is known for the loud noise with which it makes it entrance into the outside world. Often this flatulence does not have a strong odor. An "SBD", also known as "Silent but Deadly" fart, refers to those gaseous emissions that are not heard; but rather silently emitted and are known to permeate a small enclosed space with an odor that can cause those caught in its path to fear for their lives.
9. The word "fart" came about in the early 20th century to mean anything that was rusty or needed to be oiled.

Answer: False

False. The word "fart" is one of the oldest words in the English language and has kept its meaning for thousands of years. The vulgarity or impropriety of the word itself has varied throughout time and region. Overall, it is probably the most well known word for flatulence.
10. A burp is just flatulence that comes up and out instead of going down and out.

Answer: False

Burping is usually caused by the air or other gasses that you have swallowed and comes from the stomach. Flatulence is produced in the intestines and is produced through the process of digestion. It also consists of different kinds of gasses such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen.
