Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many flags have blue on them. Which of these countries has a flag that does NOT contain blue?

Answer: Italy

Many flags have red, white, and blue in some formation. These include but are not limited to Australia, Costa Rica, Cuba, France, Iceland, Liberia, New Zealand, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Australia and New Zealand have the British flag as part of their own flag because they were previously a British colony, while the United States kept the three colors but changed the design when it became independent from Great Britain.

Italy has a flag that is red, white, and green. There is no blue in it.
2. Which of these words beginning with "C" is the name of a color that is a medium shade of blue?

Answer: Cerulean

Cerulean is not an exact shade of blue, but it is more specific than just saying "blue". Cerulean is a medium shade of blue.

"Cobalt" would also be a possible answer, and the color cobalt is approximately in the center of colors that would be considered cerulean.

Chartreuse is between green and yellow. The words "crustacean" and "corvette" are not colors. A crustacean is a type of animal (including lobsters), while a corvette is a type of vehicle (a type of warship, except when referring to the Chevrolet Corvette).
3. Turquoise is a type of mineral that is also a color. The chemical formula of turquoise contains aluminum, phosphate (PO4), hydroxide (OH), and what other metal?

Answer: Copper

Turquoise is mined in the southwestern United States, including Arizona and New Mexico (and surrounding states). Jewelry and other products containing turquoise are often found in those states.

The color turquoise is blue with a hint of green. The mineral is the same color as the description of the color turquoise, although the mineral can have a slightly varying color.
4. Blue with no green looks like dark blue. Blue with a hint of green looks like a lighter blue. Cyan, with an equal amount of blue and green, looks like an even lighter blue. What is the main reason why adding green seems to make blue lighter?

Answer: The eye is more sensitive to green light than blue light

The eye is most sensitive to green light, so adding green to blue makes it appear lighter (or brighter). Primary green light appears even brighter than a blue/green combination. Light-producing objects, including computers and tablets, can create green light that looks very bright. Often, a darker green is used by website creators to avoid making green look too bright.

Even though green has a longer wavelength than blue, that is not what makes a blue/green combination look lighter. Red has an even longer wavelength, but it appears darker than green.
5. Cyan is a color between blue and green, although it is often considered a type of blue. It can be created with an equal amount of blue and green light. Cyan can also be found as a color of printer ink. Before cyan was a color, what did "cyan" refer to?

Answer: Nothing; it is just a color

Some colors have other meanings. Turquoise, emerald, ruby, sapphire, silver, gold, and copper are all materials found in the Earth's crust in addition to being colors. Chocolate, lemon, lime, and orange are all foods in addition to being colors. However, cyan is only a color, and it was not named after anything else.
6. Aquamarine is a blue-green color in addition to being a gemstone of a similar color. What type of gemstone is aquamarine?

Answer: Beryl

Beryl, quartz, corundum, topaz, and diamond can all be different colors due to impurities. They are often called different things depending on their colors, like corundum can be either sapphire or ruby.

Aquamarine is beryl that is colored cyan or close to cyan. Other types of beryl include emerald (standard green), heliodor (yellow), goshenite (no color), and morganite (pink).

On average, the color aquamarine is slightly more green than the gemstone.
7. Agave is a plant that has leaves that have colors varying, depending on the species. Some are teal, while some have the normal color of green leaves that most plants have. Most types of agave have elongated leaves spreading out in many directions from the ground. In which continent is the plant agave native?

Answer: North America

Agave is native to both North America and South America. It is found in the southwestern United States, in Mexico, in Central America, and in some parts of South America. Agave plants, like cacti, can live with much less water than the amount needed by normal plants. One type of agave is commonly used for tequila.
8. Emerald is both a gemstone and a color. Both the gemstone and the color are almost standard green, but the green color leans slightly towards blue. (This is opposed to a green color that leans slightly towards yellow, like the color lime.) In the book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", and in its sequels, there is the Emerald City. Where is Emerald City on the map of Oz?

Answer: In the center

The Emerald City is in the center of Oz. The books have much more information about the geography of Oz than the 1939 movie does. The Munchkins are to the east of Emerald City, the Winkies are to the west, and the Quadlings are to the south. These can all be found in the first book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz".

The Gillikins are to the north, but this is only mentioned in books after the first.
9. In several languages, the word for green is "verde". Which language is NOT one of them?

Answer: French

In French, "green" is "vert". Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are all very similar languages, and there are many similarities. Even though French is also a Romance language, the French language is slightly further away from Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, resulting in more differences.
10. Green is in the center of the visible light spectrum. What is the approximate wavelength of green light?

Answer: 550 nanometers

Visible light has a wavelength in the range of approximately 380 to 750 nanometers (nm). Green ranges from approximately 520 nm (leaning toward blue) to 570 nm (leaning toward yellow).

There are one thousand millimeters (mm) in one meter, one million micrometers (µm) in one meter, one billion nanometers (nm) in one meter, and one trillion picometers (pm) in one meter. This means that 550 nm is .00000055 meters.

For humans, green as a primary color of light has a wavelength of 545 nm, while the peak of visible light (the wavelength that the eye is most sensitive to) is at 555 nm.
