Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For Children: Anna Sewell's novel "Black Beauty" is one of the classic children's book of all time. What kind of animal was Black Beauty?

Answer: Horse

"Black Beauty" was published in 1877 and over fifty million copies have been printed. It has been made into a movie five times. Several writers have written 'sequels' and there was a 1972 television series.
2. Movies: In the film "Lone Star" (1996), who plays the villain Sheriff Charlie Wade who is only seen in flashbacks?

Answer: Kris Kristofferson

"Lone Star" is a complex multi-layered film that on the surface is a murder mystery. However, it explores social and racial issues in Texas with a brilliant cast of ensemble actors. Kristofferson is exceptional in the role of Sheriff Charlie Wade.
3. History: George W. Bush defeated Al Gore in the Electoral College even though Gore had .5% more popular votes. However, in what presidential election did the 'loser' get 3.0% more popular votes but still lost the election?

Answer: Rutherford Hayes/Samuel Tilden 1876

This was perhaps the most bitter and contested US presidential election ever. When the votes were first tabulated, Tilden had both the electoral and popular votes. Three states, however, were in dispute: Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. In addition, one electoral voter in Oregon was declared ineligible.

The Supreme Court, in its wisdom, gave the election to Hayes. Interestingly, Tilden campaigned against corruption in government.
4. People: In 1958 there was a killing in Lana Turner's home. Hearing a violent argument between Turner and her boyfriend, her 14 year old daughter Cheryl picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed him. It was later ruled justifiable homicide. What is the name of the man who was killed?

Answer: Johnny Stompanato

Lana Turner found herself attracted to the handsome Johnny Stompanato. When she realised that he was a criminal and aligned with Mickey Cohen, she tried to sever the relationship. Stompanato was not to be put off and followed her to England where she was filming a movie.

He came on the set waving a gun and making threats. Lana's co-star, Sean Connery, disarmed him. The UK then deported him. Later, when he showed up at the Turner home, the incident occurred. There have always been questions about what really happened.
5. Television: Between October 1960 and February 1961, the TV show "Klondike" was aired. It was set in Alaska. When fans tuned in at 9:00 PM on February 27, what did they see?

Answer: The cast and setting had been moved to Acapulco

Virtually the whole setting was moved and James Coburn and Ralph Teager still starred in almost the same format as "Klondike". "Acapulco" lasted only nine weeks. Both shows were in trouble as it they were up against the hugely popular show "Make Room for Daddy", starring Danny Thomas.

There was a real effort to make the show successful, as such talented directors as Sam Peckinpah and William Conrad were involved. There was no warning to viewers of the change from the cold of Alaska to the muggy tropics. Comedians of the day got a lot of material.
6. World: You have just visited Camp Randall, Lake Mendota, and Bascom Hill. What university have you toured?

Answer: University of Wisconsin

Located in Madison, Wisconsin, The University of Wisconsin is situated along the shore of Lake Mendota. Many older campus buildings are found along a grassy knoll called Bascom Hill. Camp Randall is the football stadium that inherited the name from a Civil War encampment.
7. Hobbies: Who or what is Mogen David?

Answer: A low-cost fortified red wine

Mogen David (sometimes referred to as MD) is a wine manufactured in Westfield, New York. It is a very popular wine, both in homes and among the derelict homeless, due to its low cost. It is technically kosher, but not recommended as a table wine. Mogen David means "the shield of David".
8. Celebrities: Elizabeth Taylor was a child actress who became an acclaimed adult actress. Which of these films did she NOT appear in before 1945?

Answer: A Date with Judy (1948)

She also made uncredited appearances in "Jane Eyre"(1943) and "The White Cliffs of Dover"(1944). In "A Date with Judy" (1948), she played the best friend of star Jane Powell.
9. Literature: There are jokes about 'Tom Swifties', such as: "I am very tired," said Tom weakly. "Give me a haircut!" said Tom barbarously. "Have I been emasculated?" Tom demanded. But who wrote the original Tom Swift books?

Answer: Many ghost writers

A man named Edward Stratemeyer conceived the concept of a boy inventor, but a publisher farmed the writing out to many unnamed writers. These juvenile books, however, inspired a whole generation of scientists, inventors, and engineers.
10. Music: I always tried to Walk the Line especially around a Ring of Fire. But I ended up in Folsom Prison in a cell with a Boy named Sue. Who am I?

Answer: Johnny Cash

The 'Man in Black' was one of the most influential country artists of all time. He was portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix in the movie "Walk the Line"( 2005) with Reese Witherspoon, who played June Carter Cash and won an Oscar.
