Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson in Manhattan, New York, on November 13, 1955. Her performance in "Ghost" won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She helped to establish the National American Woman's Suffrage Association in Colorado, and even ran for the Senate in 1909.

Ruth Handler created the Barbie Doll in 1959. Annie Edson Taylor survived a plunge over Niagara Falls in 1901, Mary Anderson patented the windshield wiper in 1905 and by 1916 it became standard equipment for all cars.

Brown was originally named the College of Rhode Island and located in the town of Warren when it was founded in 1764. The Brown family was instrumental in bringing the school to Providence in 1770, providing a great deal of funding. It was renamed in 1804, in honour of Nicholas Brown Jr., who graduated in 1786 and made significant monetary contributions to the school. The mascot is a bear named Bruno, and the school colours are seal brown, cardinal red and white.

Unfortunately, on September 20, 1973, just one day before his third album "I Got a Name" was to be released, Jim Croce died in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He was only thirty years old.
