1. When did Cardiff become the capital of Wales?

Answer: 1955

Cardiff was chosen as the capital city of Wales by a ballot on 2nd July 1954. Home Secretary Gwilym Lloyd-George announced the result in 1955. The members of the local authorities who took part in the ballot overwhelmingly voted Cardiff as the Welsh capital.
2. What sporting world championship is held at Llanwrytd Wells in Wales?

Answer: Bog Snorkelling

The World Championships of Bog Snorkelling started in 1985. They are held annually on the August bank holiday. The World Championships for marbles, gurning and conkers are all held in England.
3. Who was the first Welsh actor to win a Best Actor Oscar?

Answer: Ray Milland

Ray Milland was the first Welsh actor to win the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the alcoholic Don Birnam in 1945 in the film "The Lost Weekend". The next Welshman to win Best Actor Oscar was Anthony Hopkins for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 film "The Silence of the Lambs".
4. This city is not just the smallest in Wales, but also in the United Kingdom. What is its name?

Answer: St. David's

St. David's is located on the coast in Pembrokeshire. Although it has had a cathedral since 1131, St. David's was only granted city status in 1995 by Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth II.
5. How many national parks does Wales have?

Answer: 3

Wales is fortunate to have three superb national parks, all of which were created in the 1950s. The first to be created was Snowdonia in 1951, closely followed by the Pembrokeshire Coast in 1952 and finally Brecon Beacons in 1957. They are all worth a visit. My first trip up Snowdon was when I was two, so I didn't know much about that visit, but I regularly visited Wales after that; the scenery is fantastic.
6. Who was the first English prince to be Prince of Wales?

Answer: Edward II

The first Prince of Wales was Edward II. He was born at Caernarfon Castle in 1284 to Edward I and Eleanor of Castile. Although born in Wales in 1284, Edward was not created the Prince of Wales until 1301. On a personal note, Edward's older sister Elizabeth is one of my 21 x great-grandmothers.
7. Any general knowledge quiz on Wales would be incomplete without a question on Rugby, so here is mine: what is the nickname of the Welsh Rugby Union team?

Answer: Dragons

Wales Rugby Union team play their home games at the Millennium Stadium. The stadium is located in Cardiff.
8. Which of the following politicians is the odd one out? Hint - Not party related.

Answer: James "Jim" Callaghan

Roy Jenkins, Michael Howard and John Prescott were all born in Wales, but were never an MP for a Welsh constituency. James Callaghan, however, was born in Portsmouth, England and represented various constituencies in Cardiff throughout his career.
9. Where in Wales is the Royal Mint located?

Answer: Llantrisant

The Royal Mint at Llantrisant was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1968. The Royal Mint not only produces the coinage for the UK, but also for many other nations as well.
10. The Welsh are renowned for their vocal abilities, whether in singing or acting. Which well-known Welsh star is known as "The Voice"?

Answer: Tom Jones

Tom Jones has been performing for decades. His 39th album "Praise and Blame" (2010) reached number two in the UK Album Charts.
