He wrote the popular children's play 'Peter Pan' (1904) for which he is chiefly remembered. As a playwright, his works included 'Dear Brutus' (1917) and 'Mary Rose' (1920).

The 'Young Ones' was a situation comedy, written by Rik Mayall, Ben Elton and Lise Mayer, about rebellious students who lived together in a dilapidated house. Rick (Rik Mayall) was a fanatical Cliff Richard fan and Neil (Nigel Planer) was portrayed as a sad, vegetarian hippie. Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson) played an aggressive punk with vertically challenged Mike (Christopher Ryan), being the most sensible member of the group.

The twelve episodes included puerile conversation and mindless violence which was used to shock the viewers. Rik, Nigel, and Ade later teamed up in the situation comedy, 'Filthy Rich and Catflap', which was written by Ben Elton. Finally, Rik and Ade wrote their own situation comedy called 'Bottom', in which Rik played 'Richie Richard', and Ade portrayed the character of Eddie Hitler.
