Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are more four-lettered countries in Africa than there are in Asia.

Answer: False

The four-lettered countries of Africa are Chad, Mali and Togo. The four-lettered countries of Asia include Iran, Iraq, Oman and Laos.

The Islamic Republic of Iran was formerly called Persia before 1935 and is located in Asia. The Republic of Iraq has Arabic as its official language and has an eastern border with Iran. The Sultanate of Oman has Muscat as its capital and the Arabian Sea surrounds most of its coastline. The official name of Laos is Lao People's Democratic Republic and is surrounded by Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, China and Myanmar.
2. Dudley Moore played the character of Arthur Bach in the movie 'Arthur' (1981).

Answer: True

Playboy Arthur Bach led life to the full by constantly drinking and frivolously spending money. He needed to find a respectable heiress in a planned marriage so he wouldn't lose his inheritance. He was smitten by a poverty-stricken waitress called Linda Marolla, portrayed by Liza Minnelli. John Gielgud played Hobson, his acid-tongued butler, whose performance stole the show.
3. As a child, Charles Bronson wore his older sister's hand-me-downs for school because his family was so poor.

Answer: True

Charles Dennis Buchinsky (Charles Bronson) was born 3 November, 1921, to Polish-Lithuanian parentage. He was one of 15 children, and his parents were extremely poor. He is alleged to have worn second-hand clothes. Embarrassingly, these were from an older sister and included shoes, coats and even dresses as he had nothing else to wear. It is just a thought, but his early movies included 'Vera Cruz' (1954) and 'Machine-Gun Kelly' (1958).

Before becoming an actor he had been a miner, boxer and a juvenile delinquent. His background cast him into violent roles, and he could portray anything from a Russian to a Native American. He is well known for his 'Death Wish' movies. The first three were directed by Michael Winner.
4. The British comedy duo of 'Steptoe and Son' had Ladysmith and Kitchener as part of their character names.

Answer: True

The character of Albert Edward Ladysmith Steptoe was played by Wilfrid Brambell and his son, Harold Albert Kitchener Steptoe, was portrayed by Harry H Corbett. This wonderful situation comedy was set at 24, Oil Drum Lane, Shepherd's Bush, London, and was created by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
5. John Williams provided the memorable music for the Hitchcock classic, 'Psycho' (1960).

Answer: False

Bernard Herrmann was born June 29, 1911 in New York City, and provided the music for Hitchcock's 'Psycho' (1960). His name should really be a household name as he provided the music for other Hitchcock movies, such as 'North by Northwest' (1959), 'Vertigo' (1958), and 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' (1956). He also provided the musical scores for 'Taxi Driver' (1976), 'Cape Fear' (1991) and 'Citizen Kane' (1941).

Famous film scores by the American composer John Williams include 'Jaws' (1975), 'Jurassic Park' (1993), the 'Indiana Jones' movies, and the first three films of 'Harry Potter'.
6. Former English footballer Gary Lineker has the middle name of Churchill because he shared a birthday with Sir Winston Churchill.

Answer: False

Gary Winston Lineker was born 30 November, 1960, in Leicester, England. He began his football career at Leicester City and never received a yellow nor red card for misconduct on the playing field. Whilst he played for England, he scored 48 goals which historically was only bettered by the legendary Bobby Charlton.

After retirement from football he presented the television programme 'Match of the Day' and advertised Walker Crisps who are based in Leicester. Gary does share a birthday with Sir Winston Churchill, but his middle name is Winston, and not Churchill.
7. Geoffrey Hughes played the part of Onslow in the comedy of 'Keeping Up Appearances'. He also provided the voice of Paul McCartney in the Beatles cartoon movie 'Yellow Submarine' (1968).

Answer: True

Geoffrey Hughes was one of my favourite character actors. He was so versatile and his characters were so believable. He played binman Eddie Yeats in 'Coronation Street' and Hyacinth Bucket's (Bouquet's) brother-in-law, Onslow, in 'Keeping Up Appearances'. Hyacinth was a real snob and Onslow would always nonchalantly turn up in his scruffy vest, just to lower the tone.

In the situation comedy of 'The Royle Family' he played Twiggy, a shady goods dealer; and in the nostalgic police drama 'Heartbeat', he played Vernon Scripps who was a wheeler-dealer and a village rascal.

Alas, on 28 July, 2012, Geoff died aged 68 after a long battle with cancer, but his memory will live on through his comical roles which he played to perfection.
8. In Greek mythology, Thalia was the Greek muse of comedy.

Answer: True

Thalia was indeed the muse of comedy and pastoral poetry. The nine Muses were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. The other Muses included Calliope (Epic poetry), Clio (History), Erato (Love poetry), Euterpe (Lyric poetry), Melpomene (Tragedy), Polyhymnia (Song and mime), Terpsichore (Dance) and Urania (Astronomy). I only asked this question for a laugh, and for sheer a(muse)ment.
9. There is an 'upside down house' in Magaluf, Majorca, called the House of Katmandu.

Answer: True

Since 2007, this Tibetan-style house has been in Magaluf as a tourist attraction. It looks as though it has fallen out of the sky and landed on its roof. Inside, the attraction offers a 4D cinema experience using special effect glasses. There is also a fire and ice themed mini-golf course and a laser shooting game with a wild west theme.

Its illusions within are designed to amuse and surprise all members of the family.
10. Brother and sister duo Karen and Richard Carpenter often used the pseudonyms of Carol Singer and Joe King to sign the register at a hotel.

Answer: False

As The Carpenters, how wooden is that idea! It seems 'Only Yesterday' that this Connecticut couple were on 'Top of the World'. 'For All We Know', if it hadn't been for Karen's anorexia-associated death, they may have scaled even higher heights with their graceful music.
