Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Key Lime Pie is a dessert originating in the Florida Keys. Key lime juice, egg yolks and condensed milk are mixed until thick, and left to set in a pie crust. What is the dessert then traditionally topped with?

Answer: Meringue

The Key lime is more tart and more aromatic than other limes, giving the pie a distinct sharp taste. As the pie mixture requires no cooking it could be made by fisherman at sea around the keys.
2. The novelty song "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson repeats the phrase "Put the lime in the coconut, you drank 'em bot' up" a number of times. What ailment is the song about?

Answer: A stomach ache

The song is about a woman with a stomach ache, the supposed cause and prescribed cure for which is a drink made from putting lime in a coconut. The song featured in the film "Reservoir Dogs" and was covered by the Muppets in the fourth season of their original show.
3. With which man would you associate the name Harry Lime?

Answer: The Third Man

Orson Welles played Harry Lime in this 1949 British film noir. It is largely remembered for the following speech:

"You know what the fellow said - in Italy, for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace - and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."
4. A bottle of Corona lager is generally served with a wedge of lime in the neck. Which character are you most likely to see drinking one?

Answer: Dominic Toretto

A corona is the preferred tipple of Dominic Toretto from the "Fast & Furious" franchise, played by Vin Diesel.

Chev Chelios and Frank Martin are Jason Statham characters from the "Crank" and "Transporter" films, respectively.

John Wick is Keanu Reeves' character in the franchise of the same name.
5. As an Englishman I am sometimes referred to as "Limey" by Americans. Which of these is a slang term the English would use to describe an American?

Answer: A Septic

English sailors would eat limes to prevent scurvy, a common affliction due to lack of vitamin C in a typical seaman's diet. This earned English sailors the nickname of "Limeys," which was later applied to the English in general.

The nickname "Septic" is cockney rhyming slang: septic tank = Yank (as in Yankee)

A "titfer" is a hat, as in "tit for tat." A "Tea Leaf" is a thief, and "Bunce" refers to money: Bunsen burner = Nice little earner.
6. Which TV show, in which the lead character wore an iconic white hat, featured Mykelti Williamson as the imposing "Limehouse"?

Answer: Justified

"Justified" was an American drama focused on unorthodox deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, who reluctantly returned to his hometown of Harlan, Kentucky, where he dealt with the uneasy alliances and crude machinations of the sprawling criminal underworld.

Limehouse owns a butcher shop and BBQ and is de facto leader of Noble's Holler, an African-American community. He helps his people when he can and generally attempts to keep his people away from the schemes of the various criminal factions, but he's not afraid to get his hands dirty when he has to.
7. In which of these curries is lime a key ingredient, giving it a delicious hot and sour taste?

Answer: Ceylon

Ceylon is the former name of modern-day Sri Lanka, as well as a curry made from coconut, lime, and a specific Ceylon curry powder.

Malaya curry uses pineapple as a key ingredient, the Badami features almonds and Dhansak is made with lentils.
8. Lime Pictures is the British television production company behind three of the following juggernaut programs. Which one did they not have a hand in?

Answer: Downton Abbey

"Downton Abbey" was produced by ITV Studios, Carnival Films and WGBH-TV. It was an historical period drama that ran from 2010 to 2015.

"The Only Way Is Essex" and "Geordie Shore" are reality TV shows that have been on the air since 2010 and 2011, respectively.

"Hollyoaks" is a soap opera that has been running since 1995. I was once friends with a girl named Hollie Oakes, who was obviously named before the show was first broadcast!
9. Which bold colour did Crayola create in 1990?

Answer: Electric lime

Electric lime is a very vivid green, bordering on yellow. Crayola also created Arctic lime in 2009, though you won't find limes growing in the cold arctic climate.
10. I'm thirsty after asking all these questions - what classic cocktail can I make mixing two parts gin and one part lime juice?

Answer: A gimlet

Though they are all drinks with lime juice, a margarita traditionally uses tequila, whilst the mojito and the daiquiri are both rum based.

It is said the cocktail is named after Surgeon Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette, who encouraged sailors to add lime cordial to their gin as a measure against scurvy.
