Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two nations divided by a common language? Below are three UK English terms with their US English counterparts. A fourth pair is mismatched. Can you pick which one?

Answer: Tights/Stockings

It is vitally important to get these terms right depending on which country you're in. Tights are known as panty hose in the US. In the US, knickers are trousers that fasten at the knee. We don't have panties in the UK, but men wear pants under their trousers. Superman wears his pants over his tights, or his underpants over his panty hose. Braces/suspenders are the things that men wear over their shoulders to keep their trousers up. Suspenders/garters are those annoying dangly things worn to keep stockings up. All women have at least one set of these as a completely unwanted gift from their significant other.

In the UK garters are a frilly piece of elasticated material worn around the thigh (usually by women) also to keep stockings up.
2. Which fashion designer collected her OBE from the Queen in 1992 while not wearing any knickers?

Answer: Vivienne Westwood

Posh hat, no knickers? It couldn't have offended Her Majesty that much as Vivienne was made a Dame of the British Empire in the New Year's Honours List in 2006, and again attended Buckingham Palace knickerless. She first became famous in the 1970s when she and Malcolm Mclaren opened a shop called 'Sex'. Mary Quant popularised the mini skirt in Britain in the 1960s, Elizabeth Emmanuel (together with her then husband David) designed Diana, Princess of Wales' wedding dress and Catherine Walker was a favourite designer of Diana, Princess of Wales.
3. Howard Hughes is said to have designed a push-up bra for which actress?

Answer: Jane Russell

Hughes is said to have designed the push-up bra for Jane Russell in the film "The Outlaw", although she did not actually wear it in the film. "The Outlaw" was made in 1940 but not released until 1942 because of censorship arguments over Miss Russell's cleavage.
4. What garment first went on sale in Chicago on 19th January 1935?

Answer: Y-fronts (jockey briefs)

They were designed by one Arthur Kneibler. They were put on display in a department store window. The management thought that trying to sell such brief underwear in freezing weather wasn't a good idea and ordered the display to be cleared. Before this could be done, 600 pairs were sold and 30,000 pairs were sold in the next three months.
5. In which decade was the first bra patented?

Answer: 1910s

The story is that Mary Phelps Jacob, an American Socialite, needed a light supportive garment to go under a sheer evening gown. With the help of her maid, she came up with a garment made of two silk hankerchiefs and some ribbon. After further refinement, she took out a patent - some sources say in 1913, others 1914.
6. In the film "It Happened One Night" an actor took off his shirt, revealing that he wasn't wearing a vest (undershirt). Apparently, sales of vests plummeted following this. Name the actor.

Answer: Clark Gable

"It Happened One Night" was released in 1934. It starred Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert and was directed by Frank Capra. It was the first film to win all five major oscars (best actor, best actress, best director, best picture, best writing/adaptation).
7. Which of the following is not associated with the design and/or sale of ladies' underwear?

Answer: Helen Kaminski

Helen Kaminski is mainly known as a hat designer.
8. Approximately how many loin cloths were found in Tutankhamen's burial chamber?

Answer: 145-150

Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. It contained over 3,000 items for the young Pharoah to use in the afterlife. It took almost ten years for the tomb to be emptied of its contents.
9. Sales of boxer shorts soared when Nick Kamen stripped down to his in a Levi's advert first shown in the UK on Boxing Day (26th December) 1985. What piece of music did he strip to?

Answer: "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"

I'm not sure if this advert appeared in any other countries. If it didn't, you missed a treat. Incidentally, it also boosted sales of Levis by 800%.

"Hot Stuff" (Donna Summer), "You Sexy Thing" (Hot Chocolate) and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" (Tom Jones) can all be heard on the sound track from the film "The Full Monty".
10. Which 1970s' album was released with the actual record wrapped in a pair of paper knickers?

Answer: "School's Out" by Alice Cooper

The single of "Schools Out" reached no. 7 on the US chart but stayed at no. 1 for three weeks in the UK. All the albums listed were my "School Disco" music.
